M1: On the article "The Six Basic Human Needs"

How do the Six Human Needs show up currently in your life?

Certainty, Variety, Significance, Connection, Growth, and Contribution are the six
human wants. In our daily lives, we all need assurance, safety, stability, and predictability. We
all want to feel safe in our work, our homes, and our relationships. When we are uncertain, we
panic and get anxious.

If you ranked the Human Needs in order of which gets most of your focus what would be at
the top of the list?

For me, Physiological needs, such as food, shelter, and clothing, are the most basic of
human needs. The physiological demands of a person drive them to look for work in major part.

Which of the Human Needs are you meeting in positive/life-giving ways and which ones feel
out of balance, over-indulged or lacking in your life?

Contribution stems from a deep desire to have our lives matter, to make a difference, to
give or bring something to the world that will benefit others long after we are gone. Our need for
Contribution can be met in a variety of ways, ranging from establishing a foundation or
volunteering to support a cause we believe in to simply pausing from our busy day to smile, hug,
or assist someone in need. And the human needs that lacks in my life is Significance. The
difficulty with meeting this need arises when we become solely reliant on the input and approval
of others in order to feel complete. Furthermore, if we have a single source of Significance that is
far more powerful than other aspects of our lives (a job or career), this source of Significance can
become an addiction, causing us to lose perspective and limit the depth of our relationships.
What’s one Human Need that you could focus on fulfilling in a new way that would be
more aligned with who you came here to be and how you want to live your life?

I think it is the most basic primary need, certainty. It is our desire for a sense of security
that ensures our survival and the survival of our DNA. We satisfy it by taking care of the
essentials, such as keeping a roof over our heads and remaining safe and secure in our endeavors
and relationships. The problem with this need is that the world around us is constantly changing,
and our need for certainty can lead us to build a fence of controls to resist change and stay in our
comfort zone. It creates a sense of centeredness and stability when it is satisfied.

Is there a seventh or eighth Human Need that you would add to the list? How do you fulfill
that?

Self-acceptance. It helps you recognize your good and bad qualities, as well as relieves
feelings of guilt and unhappiness. We set ourselves up for improvement when we accept who we
are. You'll discover hidden gifts and talents that you didn't know you had while practicing self-
acceptance.
