School Age Snapshot

Child; Jonathan

Age; 6 years

Placement; School Age Room (Gym)

Observation:

Jonathan unpacks his lunch and yells ‘look Wilson!” to show his chip pack of takis in his lunch. The
teacher tells the children to raise their hands if they need a plate or spoon and Jonathan raises his hand
and says “I do.” Once the teacher gives him a plate, he places his sandwich halves on it. He says
something inaudible then “oh.” After eating his sandwich, Jonathan pours his pack of takis on the plate.
A student says something and Jonathan replies “if you don’t like takis, don’t look at them or the bag.”
Another student drops a grape on the floor, Jonathan watches it roll and points to it saying “that was
you.” The student goes to throw the fallen grape away and when he returns Jonathan says “you have to
get more hand sanitizer,” and then talks to the student about touching trash and repeats himself about
the student needing hand sanitizer. He then says something inaudible. The teacher yells “last chance for
plates” and Jonathan replies “I already have one.” Jonathan then slaps his knee and shows a student
across the table a baggie of sour patch kids from his lunch. He then asks another student if he eats takis,
he eats some of his takis and says something unclear. Jonathan yells “what’s..inaudible..wilson
what’s..inaudible..” to the student across the table and eats his takis one at a time. Jonathan tells a
student “be quiet..inaudible..if we all have to be quiet..inaudible..” he then looks under the table and
says “Hunter did you..inaudible..” to a student across the table while pointing at him. Jonathan then
points diagonally across the table and says “I can still see it” as a student attempt sto hide his baggie of
cheese puffs. He looks under the table again and once he comes back up, he says “Hunter it’s a bird,”
while still eating takis one at a time. Jonathan points down, says something inaudible, then says
“Hunter..inaudible..3,2,1..inaudible..” while still pointing. He then looks under the table and yells
“student name inaudible is out,” another student asks what he is playing. A student says something
inaudible to Jonathan and he replies “I never said you were out.” Jonathan is keeping his feet on the legs
of the lunch table; it is evident the students are playing a game similar to ‘the floor is lava’. He looks
under the table and taps his foot on another student’s foot, the student gives a fake “ow” and they both
laugh. Jonathan points across him and then says “Hunter, Hunter, Hunter, Hunter, Hunter, I got him
out..inaudible..” Jonathan then holds up his baggie of sour patch kids and says “I have four colors, what
one do you want me to eat first?” There is a lot of overlapping voices listing colors and Jonathan eats the
sour patch kids one at a time. He then says “Hunter, Hunter, Hunter, Hunter, Hunter, Hunter, them two
are out..inaudible..I pushed him” and kicks his foot out to the side. Jonathan then says “I’m 10” to a
student across the table and “inaudible name’s 11.” A student says “Jackson’s out” and he replies a
dragged out “Jackson” and “if people are out..inaudible..” There is more inaudible dialogue and
Jonathan begins to eat a carrot from his lunch and pats his hand to his chest then points across the
table. Jonathan says to a student “haha you looked,” shakes his head then says something unclear. He
then eats some lettuce from his lunch and says “Hunter, Hunter, Hunter, Hunter, Hunter, Hunter, Hunter
Cody did this..inaudible..,” then says something unclear to another student as he continues to eat
lettuce. Jonathan then shakes his head at a different student.

Reflection:

Jonathan is a child who likes to be social. With Jonathan repeating a students name frequently there is a
suggestion that he may have trouble making friends (as I’ve seen this behavior before in children) but it
could also have been because the gymnasium was loud with everyone’s voices going at once. Jonathan
was neat with his lunch and demonstrated cleanliness when telling another student, they needed to
sanitize their hands after touching trash.

Implications for Teachers:

I think the teachers were great during this lunch time. Even though it was loud in the gymnasium the
teachers understood that that is how children are and allowed the students to have fun talking to each
other. There were four teachers in the gymnasium, one teacher stood to the side and watched while
another teacher sat in a different area within the lunch tables and talked to some of the students. I think
it’s great the teacher sat and talked with the students during lunch.
