CHAPTER-1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction
E-learning has become a trend in education nowadays and is becoming an important part of our
education system. Due to widespread of internet access by people e-learning is seeing a massive
growth, and there are many educational applications/websites that are been developed for this
purpose. And thus, this paper explores the effectiveness of educational applications and websites
on students. The research problem enacted from this concept is that on whether the students are
benefiting and understanding the concepts taught by educational applications/websites or are
they finding any difficulty because of the method opted by the educational applications/websites
and the traditional method through which they are taught in their schools. The main objective of
this study is to analyse the effectiveness of the content and material provided by the educational
applications/websites to the students, and if they are getting confused or facing any difficulties
due to the different method opted in teaching by schools and the applications/websites. The
researcher intends on giving out the questionnaires to students in order to meet the objective of
this study. With the growth in the technology, students are preferring both where the schools opt
the e-learning methods that is the visuals to teach them new concepts.

In this technological era education has conquered the major chunk in this era. Education is one
such area where the students are benefitting with it being taught on internet. The education
taught and learnt on an online platform is called E-learning. These educational applications and
websites try to teach the students through visuals and videos as it is believed that visuals are an
easy way to remember and understand a concept. There are many educational websites and
applications for the students all over the world, which is easily accessible and student friendly,
and all we need is internet to access them no matter which country you stay in. This chapter
gives detailed information on how E-learning became a way to educate people, a short insight
about the educational applications in abroad and India.

E-learning can be considered in two levels: the educator level and the trainer level. The educator
level is where the educator could use it for both primary and higher studies. The trainer level is
where the employees could be trained and updated by their companies.

The adoption and usage of e-learning in schools, corporates in India is very low as compared to
the international market. E-learning in India has been more successful in the corporates segment
where it is seen as a means to achieve business goals and motivate the employees. There are a lot
of strategies been made and implemented in India to change the mindset of people and build faith
in them for online degrees apart from the degrees provided by top institutes like IITs in India.
The highly educated professors are based in cities and they do not educate the people of rural
areas. And with e-learning their lectures could reach them. Hence if e-learning reaches the
remote and rural part of India then it would be much faster to educate the people (Sharma Sunil,
Wasim Javed, Dr.Siddique Jamshed, 2014).

Byju’s is an educational learning application with 10 million downloads. It is a Bangalore based

educational technology (edtech) and online tutoring firm. Byjus was founded by Byju
Raveendran in 2011.Byjus application not only teaches and provides materials from classes 4-12,
but also trains students for competitive exams like IIT, JEE, NEET, CAT, IAS, GRE and
GMAT. Delivering world class learning experience, BYJU‟S is making learning contextual and
visual, and not just theoretical. The app has been designed to adapt to the unique learning style.

1.2 Literature Review

1.2.1 Prashant:

joined BYJU’S team on a whim, brimming with curiosity to know more about sound and music.
Since 2015 it has been an exhilarating journey filled with new experiences. Meeting Prashant
was pure chance (we work in a big office), but I would never have guessed his poetic side if we
at team Story Weaver hadn’t interviewed him. We asked him what his alter ego would be if not
composing music for BYJU’S sound team and his answer was short and prompts, “Poems,
anytime, any day!”

Approaching Prashant and getting familiar with his myriad interests and projects was no easy
task. When we learned that BYJU’S sound team creates music for the app from scratch, we
began to realize the enormous amount of workload they go through every day. Prashant is a
sound ace, something which he inherited from his childhood exposure to sounds, tunes, and
music. He credits his father for filling his younger days with early morning music.

1.2.2 J Anand:
Ed-tech start-up Biju’s plans to start offering its services outside India from September, as it
enters its next growth phase after raising around $200 million (around Rs 1,303 crore) till date
from a clutch of domestic and foreign investors. Following in the footsteps of Zomato, Practo
and Ola, the Bengaluru-based company will launch its app for English-speaking international
markets in later this year, founder and chief executive Biju Raveendran told TechCircle. “We
will roll out in these markets and test the acceptance of the product before spending money on
marketing in a particular market. With almost a million paid subscribers paying upwards of Rs
10,000, we will generate a lot of cash surplus from India and our last funding can support our
global ambitions," he said.

1.2.3 Jose Hector, Darlington:

It’s just past midnight at Bengaluru’s popular sporting facility—the Play Arena—and the last
group of players are trooping out, sapped. And in walks Byju’s Raveendran and team for a
customary 12 midnight to 2 am slot. Employees at Think and Learn Pvt Ltd, which runs the
education technology start-up Byju’s, are well-versed with the founder’s love for football and his
penchant to use the game as a tool to keep himself motivated. The midnight-2 am game takes
place once every two days and the game is played at full tilt, just the way Byju’s Raveendran
likes it. “I don’t like half measures, whether at work or play,” he says, as we settle into a
conversation at a coffee shop.

Byju’s App, which is now a Harvard Business School case study, is today valued at $600 million
and is hoping to turn a unicorn soon. The firm generated revenues of about Rs 260 crore last
fiscal, and is aiming to turn profitable in FY18. “A profitable unicorn is a dream,” Raveendran
says. The Harvard case study, authored by John Jong-Hyun Kim and Rachna Tamilian, studies
the growth of this K-12 app, its impact on students and how it can be used by students the world
over.

1.2.4 Soni Sandeep:

Byju’s – India’s most loved tutoring app is on a growth rampage and perhaps among the rare
product innovations that has come out of India in recent times. The edtech start-up is now a part
of India's prestigious unicorn club with $1 billion in estimated worth. Bengaluru-based Byju's in
its runway to changing how students learn recently snapped up two of the earliest businesses in
technology-based education – Tutor Vista and Erudite. The start-up had earlier raised funding
from Verlinvest, a large Belgian family-owned, consumer-focused, diversification investment
holding company and had also secured $50 million in a round co-led by Mark Zuckerberg's and
Priscilla Chan's investment arm - The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) and Sequoia Capital,
along with a bunch of other investors such as Sofina, Lightspeed Ventures, and Times Internet
Ltd. Given below is the chronology of events related to Byju's journey of becoming a unicorn.

1.2.5 Dwivedi, Vinay:

Byju’s Raveendran, 35, was training graduate students on how to crack the Common Aptitude
Test (CAT)—the entrance exam conducted by IIMs—when he decided to shift focus to early
childhood education. Students taking competitive exams, says Raveendran, have a much higher
chance of success, if they are taught some of the basic subjects, such as math and science, in an
engaging and interesting way in school. “My experience with graduate students made me realise
that you can make a bigger impact if you can make an intervention in the way students learn in
their formative years,” he says. So, Raveendran, a mechanical engineer from Calicut University,
founded Byju’s in October 2012.Byju’s, which seeks to alter the way students learn, offers
programmes for children from Classes IV to XII, besides preparing graduates for competitive
exams—CAT, IAS.SSC, KPSC.

1.2.6 Dubey, Tanya:

You’re probably one of those people who was scared of math as a kid, and many children still
find doing mathematics a chore which becomes more boring and uneventful especially as you
grow older. Students often overlook the fact that math concepts are interwoven in their daily
lives and not as abstract as it may seem. This is exactly what Byju’s wants to highlight with its
new gamified app for lower grades, the BYJU’S Math App. The application has been designed to
offer younger children a platform to explore the world of maths through games, interactive
videos, and quizzes. Ideated, designed and developed in-house, the class 4 and 5 app merges
appealing features of game design and technology with innovative and rich interactive videos
that create a whole new and fun way for students to strengthen their foundation in math. This app
is available both on iOS and Android.

1.2.7 Venkatesh Ganesh:

Byju’s, which started off as a tutorial centre in 2011, is metamorphosising into an ed-tech
company. It has around four lakh paid customers across K-12 and JEE, NEET, CAT, IAS, GRE
and GMAT, which are taught with a mix of physical classrooms, interactive videos and delivered
through an app. Recently, it received funding from Verlinvest, a Belgium-based fund, and World
Bank Group member IFC, amongst others. Byju’s Raveendran, CEO, spoke to Business Line on
the way apps can help students and parents, employability issues in India and plans to be
profitable.

1.2.8 Nair, Roshani:

Byju’s was conceived by Byju’s Raveendran in the living room of his friend’s house in
Bengaluru where he used to give free tuitions to friends aspiring to crack management
entrance tests, while he was on a break from his stint as a service engineer at Pan Ocean
Shipping. Today, the EdTech giant has managed to raise over $ 200 million in
investments and counts names like Chan-Zuckerberg initiative, Sequoia Capital India,
Sofina, Verlinvest, Light Speed Venture Partners, Times Internet, Aarin Capital, IFC and
Tencent among their investors.

1.2.9 Malik, Yuvaraja:

The Walt Disney Company and education firm Biju’s are jointly rolling out a new leaning app
targeted at children aged 6-8 years, Biju’s said on Thursday. Disney. BYJU’S Early Learn app
will feature Disney cartoon characters in new course material designed for class 1-3 students. For
Biju’s, the announcement marks its foray into a new category. At present, its Learning App, the
company’s core platform launched in 2015, offers courses in class 4-12 category, and for various
competitive exams.

For Disney, the partnership is a first in education space. While the contours of the partnership
were not revealed, sources said the two would share the revenue on sales of the new product.
Sources added that Biju’s would look to leverage the Disney-partnered course content in
international markets like the US, where it is preparing to launch soon. The new app will offer
personalised learning programmes featuring Disney’s timeless stories and characters from
Disney Princess, Frozen, Cars, and Toy Story franchises, Byju’s said. The courses are in the
form of videos, games, stories, and interactive quizzes. It also has worksheets with capabilities
for parents to track their children’s learning.

1.2.10 Sayan Chakraborty:

Education technology start-up Biju’s (Think and Learn Pvt. Ltd) has acquired global education
company Pearson Plc.’s Tutor Vista and Erudite for an undisclosed amount, in a move aimed at
expanding global reach as well as offerings for students. “This partnership will enhance our
product offerings and give us access in some of the new markets when we launch our
international products. We are excited to work with the talented and experienced team who will
come on-board as a part of this acquisition,” Byju’s Raveendran, founder and chief executive at
Byju’s said in a statement.

“With increased brand awareness, our core offering has witnessed massive adoption amongst
students across grades (classes 4-12). We strongly believe that a product like ours can change the
way students learn all across the world. Today, with a wider bandwidth, we have started creating
similar products for the international markets that further boost our reach as well as product
portfolio,” he added.

Research methodology is the specific procedures or techniques used to identify,

select, process, and analyse information about a topic. Here in this study both qualitative and
quantitative approaches are used.

1.6.1 Type of Research

Survey method of research is one of the types of descriptive research, in this study I use
survey method of research, here participants answer questions administered through interviews
or questionnaires. After participants answer the questions, I describe the responses given. In
order for the survey to be both reliable and valid it is important that the questions are constructed
properly. Questions should be written so they are clear and easy to comprehend.

CHAPTER-2

Conceptual Framework

2.1 Introduction

In this technological era education has conquered the major chunk in this era. Education is one
such area where the students are benefitting with it being taught on internet. The education
taught and learnt on an online platform is called E-learning. These educational applications and
websites try to teach the students through visuals and videos as it is believed that visuals are an
easy way to remember and understand a concept. There are many educational websites and
applications for the students all over the world, which is easily accessible and student friendly,
and all we need is internet to access them no matter which country you stay in. This chapter
gives detailed information on how E-learning became a way to educate people, a short insight
about the educational applications in abroad and India

2.2 Concept of E-learning

E-Learning is learning through electronic technologies to access educational curriculum

outside of a traditional classroom. It mostly refers to a course, program or degree delivered
completely online. In simple terms, Education via internet is called e-learning. E-learning is
mostly interactive learning on internet, where the students can interact, ask doubts to the
professor teaching online etc. sometimes e-learning is also done where there are pre recordings
of topics done by professors with the help of diagrammatic presentations and e-learning has been
proven to be an efficient way of studying (elearninggvc.gov). With e-learning, learners can
access the information from anywhere and at any time. The advantage of learning is that it can be
used at any time of the day according to the learner’s convenience, and this is one thing that the
classroom and office learning cannot compete with. E-learning saves time, money, materials and
resources by keeping them online and saving papers as well and less chances of the materials and
resources getting lost (Bridge). E-learning has grown exponentially after the growth of internet.
In the early 1920s Sidney Pressey developed a machine to provide drill and practice items to
students in his introductory courses. Training can become a logistic nightmare if you are working

long period of times in remote locations, e-learning is the best way solution for students and
organizations in these circumstances and it can also act as a tool of communication-learning
enhances the techniques like self-motivation, self-discipline and time management (20/20)

2.3 Objective

2.3.1 General Objective

 To find out the percentage of the economically affordable students

 To analyse the health issues faced by the students due to e-studying.
 To find out the difficulties faced by the students due to style of teaching opted in e-
studies apps.
 To analyse the number of students preferring the e-education provided by the educational
applications.

2.3.2 Specific Objective

 To analyse the number of students preferring the e-education provided by the

educational applications in Bengaluru.
 To analyse the effectiveness of the understanding of the content on the applications on
the students of Bengaluru

2.4 E-learning In India

E-learning can be considered in two levels: the educator level and the trainer level. The
educator level is where the educator could use it for both primary and higher studies. The trainer
level is where the employees could be trained and updated by their companies. The adoption and
usage of e-learning in schools, corporates in India is very low as compared to the international
market. E-learning in India has been more successful in the corporates segment where it is seen
as a means to achieve business goals and motivate the employees. There are a lot of strategies
been made and implemented in India to change the mindset of people and build faith in them for
online degrees apart from the degrees provided by top institutes like IITs in India. The highly
educated professors are based in cities and they do not educate the people of rural areas.

2.5 Role of E-Learning in the Quality Improvement of Higher Education

E – Learning is a type of teaching and learning that can be obtained by means of on line
technology. E learning can involve a greater of equipment than on line training or learning of as
the same implies, “on line” involves using the internet or intranet. E-Learning involves all kinds
of electronic media by utilizing all the potentialities of information technology (Kalaivani A,
2014). E-learning can be divided into several categories but the three important categories are:
Web Supplemented-where the way of teaching is the traditional method but there are notes or
some things related to the subject sent on line (e-mail) to the students. Web Dependent- without
the reduction of classroom timings, the students are required to use the internet for key elements
like online discussions, project etc. Mixed Modes- courses begin to replace the classroom
timings. There are four ways to approach e-learning and they are: Computer based learning;
Computer based trainings, Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), Technology
Enhanced learning (TEL). The e-learning system not only provides learning objectives, but also
evaluates the progress of the student and credit can be earned towards higher learning
institutions. E-learning is naturally suited to distance learning and flexible learning, but can also
be used in conjunction with face-to-face teaching (Dr. A. Kalaivani, 2014, p.17).

2.6 Types of E- Learning

 Computer Managed Learning (CML)

In the case of computer-managed learning (CML), also known as Computer
Managed Instruction (CMI), computers are used to manage and assess learning processes.
Computer managed learning systems operate through information databases. These
databases contain bits of information which the student has to learn, together with a
number of ranking parameters which enables the system to be individualized according to
the preferences of each student.

Department of IMSR, Kuvempu UniversityPage 15

Students and Job Aspirants Perception Towards BYJU’S

 Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI)

Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI), also sometimes referred to as computer-
assisted learning (CAL), is another type of e-learning which uses computers together with
traditional teaching. This could mean interactive software for the students or the kind of
training software used by Patrick Suppers of Stanford University in 1966. Computer-
assisted training methods use a combination of multimedia such as text, graphics, sound,
and video in order to enhance learning.

 Synchronous Online Learning

Synchronous online learning enables groups of students to participate in a learning
activity together at the same time, from any place in the world. Real-time synchronous
online learning often involves online chats and videoconferencing, as these tools allow
training participants and instructors to ask and answer questions instantly while being
able to communicate with the other participants.

 Adaptive E-Learning
Adaptive e-learning is a new and innovative type of e-learning, which makes it
possible to adapt and redesign learning materials for each individual learner. Taking a
number of parameters such as student performance, goals, abilities, skills, and
characteristics into consideration, adaptive e-learning tools allow education to become
more individualized and student-centered than ever before.

 Individual Online Learning

Individual learning in this context refers to the number of students participating in

achieving the learning goals, rather than the student-centeredness of the material. This type of
learning has been the norm in traditional classrooms for thousands of years. When practicing
individual learning, the students study the learning materials on their own (individually), and
they are expected to meet their learning goals on their own.

2.10 Top five strategies for success in online learning

 Devote consistent blocs of time to the class

Online courses are often attractive to students because they offer flexibility,
particularly for those with demanding professional or personal responsibilities. This flexibility,
however, can lead students into trouble. It can be tempting for students to delay working through
the course material, thinking they’ll find time later in the week

 Communicate regularly with the professor

Opening and using these lines of communication will benefit you both during and beyond
the course. During the course, it’s important to ask questions when the material or assignments
are unclear and discuss larger assignments such as research papers. Use the mode of
communication preferred by the instructor (e.g. email, Skype, phone) but don’t shrink away from
these conversations. Students who fail to get their questions answered and concerns addressed
often fall behind quickly and significantly.

Department of IMSR, Kuvempu UniversityPage 20

Students and Job Aspirants Perception Towards BYJU’S

 Engage with your classmates

Don’t limit your discussion postings to responding to the prompts posted by the instructor.
Add your own insights and questions to the discussion. I always appreciate when students post a
relevant news article or scholarly publication they’ve come across. These contributions help
other students relate the course material to the real world and other areas of study. In addition,
share appropriate information about yourself, such as your career interests and other courses
you’ve enjoyed.

 Begin your work early

In an online class, particularly for first-time students, there may be technical difficulties to
overcome. Take the risk of these difficulties into account, and give yourself time to acclimate to
new software and hardware. Further, give your instructors a reasonable amount of time to answer
your questions. In an online class, exchanging emails or arranging phone conversations takes
time. In short, expect that you will encounter hurdles when completing the work and leave
yourself time to overcome them.

 Remember that online classes vary greatly

Just as with on-the-ground classes, there are many ways to design an online class. Research
course offerings ahead of time to determine if the instructor, structure and material are a good fit
for you. Some online classes, for example, rely largely on the discussion boards to further your
learning while others make heavier use of group projects, individually-written papers or
collaborative problem sets. Don’t be shy about contacting the professor (and students who have
taken the course previously) to find out what you can expect. Online instructors are using a wide
array of exciting technologies to enhance their instruction. Think seriously about how you learn
best, and select a course that meets your needs.

During one of his work breaks, he sat for a CAT exam with no preparation and scored a 100
percentile! Totally surprised at his score, he took the test again to get 100 percentile again. This
was just the beginning to the creation of India's largest Learning App, BYJU'S! Byju's friends
encouraged him to teach and help them prepare for the CAT exam and before he knew he was
conducting workshops for over 1000 students in packed auditoriums.

Byju’s eventually quit his job as an engineer and took up teaching full-time. He travelled to other
cities to reach as many students as possible. With a strong dedicated team in place, Byju’s
launched online video-based learning for CAT through VSAT. This helped the team to conduct
lectures in multiple centres across the country. Through these sessions, Byju’s realised that if he
wanted to make a real impact on the way students learn, he needed to make students fall in love
with learning. The crucial and founding years of learning are when the students start feeling the
subject. Byju’s launched Think and Learn Pvt. Ltd. (the parent company of BYJU'S) with a
focus on K-12 segment (school going students from 4-12) in 2011 followed by their flagship

3.11 Brand Building Strategies Fallowed by BYJU’s

Raveendran's experience outside the rigours of a structured education system, or spoon-

feeding, underpins much of Byju's product strategy today. “Our product is built on that strong
belief that when students learn on their own, where they take the initiative, whatever you call
learning, that counts for 50%.

 Thinking Big

“If you are copying someone, maybe thinking big is not that important because you need to copy
it very well and you need to execute it well but if you’re doing something new, thinking big is
50%. From a classroom of 40 I thought of going 30x without ever worrying... I was sure that if
I’m booking 1,200 I will fill it. Sixth or seventh week the auditorium was full. Then I never
looked back," says Raveendran.

 Growing up

Raveendran self-assuredly rattles off the story of how the company came to be (speaking an
average of 138 words per minute during the course of our hour-long interview) while repeatedly
insisting that he’s not trying to be boastful. He grew up in Azhikode in Kannur district of Kerala.
His parents were teachers at the Malayalam-medium government school he attended, but always
made sure he wasn’t in any of their classes. It would have been awkward, you see. Raveendran
had a habit of bunking classes to play football, cricket, badminton and table tennis.

 Potentially vast market

Byju’s initial offerings were all centred around test-preparation, and these were much more low-
key than the jazzy, high-production-value videos and content that it currently generates for the
K-12 (kindergarten-Class XII) segment, with more than 500 members in the research and
development team. This content is what’s helping Byju’s accelerate growth and be one of the top
education start-ups in the country.

Department of IMSR, Kuvempu UniversityPage 30

Students and Job Aspirants Perception Towards BYJU’S

There are about 20 million children between Classes VI and XII in India who have access to the
Internet and take private coaching classes, which translates to an addressable market opportunity
of about $2.5 billion, according to research by consulting firm RedSeer Consulting.

 Cracking the B2C market

Raveendran’s experience outside the rigours of a structured education system, or spoon-feeding,

underpins much of Byju’s product strategy today. “Our product is built on that strong belief that
when students learn on their own, where they take the initiative, whatever you call learning, that
counts for 50%. Unfortunately, today it’s 100% spoon-feeding in a lot of students’ cases, 100%
learning for exams and not the other way around. The other way around is you learn such that
exams are taken care of. They are just part of the process and not the end of it," he explains.
Byju’s has made progress in cracking the business-to-consumer (B2C) market, one typically
thought to be very tricky because it involves not just engaging children, but convincing parents
that an app is a suitable substitute for real-world coaching, and trusting the company with their

child’s education.

 Getting people to pay

What Byju has done really, really well and why he is getting all this love from the market is
because he cracked the commerce part of the question very, very successfully. To get people to
pay at a $150 price point, almost Rs10,000 and get them to pay for this annually was a bold
move, because this is not your primary offering to parents. You have school, you have your
regular classes and this is the extra step that you take," says Murali. Byju’s is a part of InnoVen’s
portfolio. The fact that Byju’s had an offline presence has also helped in gaining parents’ trust in
the brand.

3.12 New Trends In BYJU’s

Byju's, India's most-funded educational technology platform has launched a new version of
its learning app to create a one-on-one learning experience for its app users through
personalisation using big data analytics.Featuring unique learn journeys, guided paths, actionable
feedback and intelligent recommendations, this version of the app aims to trace the learning
fingerprint fusers. “We started off by a 'one teacher to thousand students' approach in our offline
teaching model. Now, leveraging the technology we have built on our app over the past couple of
years, we aim to achieve providing a one-to-one learning experience for our users," said Byju
Raveendran, CEO of Byju's. Byju's, which counts International Finance Corporation (IFC), the
investment arm of the World Bank and Sequoia Capital among investors,

Analysis and Interpretation of Data

4.1 Introduction

Data interpretation refers to the implementation of processes through which data is reviewed for
the purpose of arriving at an informed conclusion. The interpretation of data assigns a meaning
to the information analysed and determines its signification and implications.

The importance of data interpretation is evident and this is why it needs to be done properly.
Data is very likely to arrive from multiple sources and has a tendency to enter the analysis
process with order. While there are several different types of processes that are implemented
based on individual data nature, the two broadest and most common categories are “quantitative
analysis” and “qualitative analysis”.

The interpretation of data is designed to help people make sense of numerical data that has been
collected, analysed and presented. The purpose of collection and interpretation is to acquire
useful and usable information and to make the most informed decisions possible.
