Project Discovery

Assignment 01
Advanced Programme in Strategic Project
Management
Indian Institute of Management Calcutta
1 DOCUMENT DEFINITION:
This document is to define the discovery phase attributes of “NASA Mobile” project.
The project was initiated with the intent to roll out a technological superior channel in
the market which can lead to increase in market share for consumer banking
products.

Due to the aggressive time to market commitments, the project made some initial
compromises in the discovery and pre-project planning phases. The target operating
model and Infrastructure design were not worked out in depth and the resultant was
high cost for change management and production issues.

In retrospect, I believe that with a better analyzed discovery phase, we would have a
smoother project implementation. The following are the areas that could have
improved:
 Target Operating Model Definition – All the respective business units would
have been on-boarded from the initiation, leading to reduced time for
ramping up resources.
 Infrastructure – More data analysis would have allowed identifying the telco
connection issues beyond the main city areas. This could have been factored
in the technical design which would have resulted in less issues due to
connection problems.

2 PROJECT OBJECTIVE
Consumer banking is embarking on a new banking channel “NASA Mobile” to
enable banking services fulfilment capabilities for mobile sales through the use of
NASA Mobile Kit. The banking services to be made available are: Straight-through
CASA account opening that includes Debit Card issuance, PIN activation, Clicks E-
PIN and TAC activation, Straight-through ASB Financing, General Insurance
(bancassurance) application, enabling cross-sell of products.

3 BUSINESS BENEFITS
 To provide a new channel to customers for banking services such as CASA account
opening, ASB Financing and General Insurance (bancassurance) applications.
 Extending banking operations to customers’ premises, areas frequented by the
customers (shopping malls, LRT stations, etc.), senior executives of large corporations,
white and blue collar employees and at CIMB road shows
 Straight-through for CASA account opening and ASB Financing that shortens
processing Turn-Around-Time (TAT)
 Paperless CASA account opening, ASB Financing and General Insurance applications
 Enabling cross-sell of products
 System-based approval for ASB Financing
 Cost savings in terms of printing, scanning, document storage and staff overheads
through process efficiencies in back-office document handling
