BACKGROUND OF ED-TECH
Edtech, a portmanteau of the expression "training innovation," is its mix of devices and
instructive practices pointed toward encouraging and upgrading learning. The worldwide
training innovations market size was esteemed at USD 76.4 billion out of 2019 and is required
to develop at a compound yearly development rate (CAGR) of 18.1% from 2020 to 2027. The
business is principally determined by the expansion of shrewd gadgets and consistent web
network. Moreover, expanding mindfulness relating to the upsides of innovation joining in
the instruction division is invigorating business sector development. As of late, there has been
a colossal move occurring in the training division from customary test situated figuring out
how to a customized and intelligent learning approach. Digitization is progressively infiltrating
the instruction part with advancements used to convey training, abilities, and information in
new and inventive procedures. The utilization of such advancements has empowered learning
and improvement to a deeply rooted measure. Advanced training is anticipated to flourish
with a wide cluster of recipients over the topographical districts, age, and financial conditions.

The training division is on the cusp of an advanced transformation. In the period of

digitization, computerization, and man-made brainpower (man-made intelligence), the
customary instructing strategies for teaching the understudies aren't the main accessible
choice. The execution of innovation in instruction is empowering schools and organizations
to offer inventive arrangements, for example, digital books, vivid substances through
Enlarged Reality (AR)/Augmented Reality (VR), and online courses with accreditation from
perceived colleges. Various organizations, including new companies just as set up players, are
seeing this as a huge business chance to tap.
India's EdTech market will touch $3.5 billion - $4 billion by 2022. India is home to the second-
highest number of EdTech companies (327), followed by Brazil (275), the United Kingdom
(245), and China (101). The Fourth Industrial Revolution put India on the global digital map
and offered a boost to the start-up economy. While sectors like health, finance, and logistics
witnessed significant adoption, the EdTech sector also made strides offering a new way to
learn. Edtech firms creating solutions to cater to rural and poor populations like iDream
Education delivering educational tablets and tablets for digital learning in schools. Through
the use of new innovative technology like AI, ML, and data mining the start-up ecosystem is
making the education more interactive for the students and propel them to crave more
engaging content. Edtech firms provide new employment opportunities for young teachers,
which in turn increases prosperity among the developing Indian society.

SCOPE
Growing adoption of education technology (EdTech) tools across both the academic as well
as non-academic sectors are anticipated to affect the market growth positively. Apart from
formal education, there is an increasing role of digital learning in supporting adults to scale
up their skill sets throughout their careers. Technology is anticipated to play a vital role in
supporting adults in overcoming several challenges, such as enabling students the flexibility
to learn the new skills without being restricted to a specific geographical location or
availability of resources.

EdTech is expected to play a crucial and significant role in creating jobs for future generations.
Education across the globe is shifting towards student-centric and more inclusive learning. A
key component of making an inclusive learning environment is implementing assistive
technologies in an attempt to better cater to students with special needs. In recent years,
technology has revolutionized education significantly with the implementation of EdTech
solutions, such as Student Information System (SIS), smartboards (whiteboards and
interactive boards), and test prep software.
The online education system is increased progressively over the outdated methods of
teaching. Even the first-grade student today knows how to operate a computer and can
proficiently open websites that are of use to him. Technology has become more forward-
thinking and a growing number of innovations are coming up in the education industry. This
trend has opened up several opportunities for the students. Technology has made education
accessible to those students as well which placed in the remote areas and unaware of
the advancements in the education. The use of technology has connected the students,
educationists, and all the people related to education. Now students can get tutoring online,
they can find study materials online without spending a hefty amount of money on them and
they can enjoy various extra-curricular activities with the help of technology.

IMPORTANCE
-Improved user engagement and learning impact: User experience and engagement is fast
becoming the main differentiator among the ever-growing field of education technology.
The integration of multimedia, gamification, mobile casual, and informal learning apps and
peer-to-peer learning platforms are all making content increasingly immersive; designed to
not only attract students but also keep them engaged until the end. EdTech is also creating a
stronger link between what happens in the classroom and outside the classroom (at home,
in transit, etc.), making teacher-endorsed digital educational resources available at all times,
such as assignments and test prep material, and creating a continuum of touchpoints in the
learning experience for pupils.
-The democratization of education: The importance of EdTech does not just lie with the
power it has to bring down costs and engage learners in new and innovative ways. It is also
about how it can equalize standards and enable access for all, resulting in the
democratization of education. Online platforms, mobile applications, and new learning
formats have massively improved access to education, as well as enhancing the learning
process itself, while online and Cloud technologies bring with them exciting standardisation
possibilities for content. Now, a rundown, inner-city school can receive the same standard
and level of content as a well-funded one in a wealthy area.
-Building the knowledge economy: The knowledge economy that we invest in for our
children via the school system and right through to higher education and on-going,
professional development and training is a fundamental support to the rest of our economic
lives. Without it, we lose our ability to develop skilled workers, build competitive
advantages as nations, and generate growth. To keep developing the knowledge economy
we need to ensure, as with other sectors, that we maintain a level of innovation to improve
the efficacy and efficiency of our learning systems. This is the importance of EdTech.

PERSONAL OPINION

During these unprecedented times of Covid-19, businesses are finding it hard to survive and
economies worldwide are affected. Out of the few sectors that show growth trajectory, the
Ed-tech industry is one of them. The education technology sector is seeing investment and
expenditure from various forums like governments, universities, colleges, schools, and other
institutions globally. In India alone, it has estimated to grow 3.7 times in size let alone its rise
across other parts of the globe. The key growth drivers pushing it forward is its ability to serve
a vast population at a significantly low price as compared to common classroom learning and
with the telecom industry competing in the Indian market making internet and smartphone
penetration to the remotest area, serves as a cherry on the cake- an added advantage.
The Indian Ed-tech industry has tried out various innovations and inventions in its operations
from physical to the virtual classes but the adoption rate of these trends pre-COVID era was
very low. With Coronavirus fear uncontrollably spreading across schools, colleges, and
educational institutes, the ideas of tech-based solutions and leanings saw wide adoption from
them to ensure the academic flow is not impeded.

According to the data available, the paid and free unique subscriber database has doubled
itself with a fifty percent increase in time spent on these platforms, and willingness to pay has
increased from forty to eighty percent (approx.) in its paid user. The various courses and
contents offered at these digital platforms start from the elementary level to higher education
and beyond so that students find it better, adjustable, and convenient to continue their
education and see it as a reasonably priced alternative to classroom sessions.
Being a part of this era, I too have experienced online live and recorded sessions just to realize
how much I miss and value physical classes at the end of the day. My opinion is no different
from the other popular opinions of how students learn more effectively through face-to-face
interaction with friends, peers, and faculty and ask for feedback, react to situations and
establish a bond among themselves.

However, online learning may be preferable for a few numbers of students and professionals
who due to unwanted reasons like lack of financial aid or time could not start or resume
physical classes but as the need for the hour, want to upskill their higher and technical
knowledge to ensure survival and job security in the corporate world.
One of the major concerns with digital learning is its quality and relevance. Human behaviour
suggests that we interpret the meaning and apply the same knowledge that we learn from
seeing and doing work practically. Online learning has facilitated just one side of it - engaging
our visuals but has failed to provide practical experience in the process. Students who are
finding it difficult to express themselves openly or a few who voluntarily do not want to put
9

in any effort, receive their degrees with little or no traditional participation. Students as well
Page

as teachers who are not thorough with technical skills to operate such platforms find it
frustrating to take in or deliver quality knowledge that ultimately results in losing focus and
interest gradually.
There is no denial of the fact that online sessions can never replicate the aura classroom
environment. It is not only just four walls but also a medium of learning, interactions, and
exchange of reactions and expressions that aims at 360-degree development. They prove to
be mutually beneficial and add value to both the parties involved. Various fun-filled activities
and team-building exercises in classrooms help students broaden and widen their thinking
and deepen their interests with the help of peer-to-peer learning. On the other hand,
completing group assignments on digital platforms becomes harder and even more
challenging due to a lack of understanding and confusion, coming to a consensus on a task in
itself.
Online classes grant students to take control and charge for their learning as compared to
the traditional approach. Online tests become difficult to conduct and watch, as students are
at the freedom to access limitless resources available to them. We should also consider that
people have their degree of discipline. Few students have a hard time learning if not pushed
to study for tests. Classroom administration keeps them on track to being committed to their
education.
Last but not the least, various health issues pose a threat to online learning via screens-
increase in eye power due to harmful rays coming out of it and continuous focus, sitting in
one place for a long time may lead to obesity and heart diseases, and in some cases exercises
fail to reduce the risks.

To conclude I would like to say that even though the Ed-tech industry is outperforming itself,
the drawbacks of virtual or digital classes overshadow its advantages. Online platforms are
beneficial to experienced professionals because it is similar to the working culture of the
corporate worlds. For starters, traditional/conventional ways of learning would prove to be
more constructive and successful.
