Tutorial Sheet 1: Basic Probability

1. A box contains 1000 light bulbs. The probability that there is at least 1 defective bulb in the box is 0.1, and
the probability that there are at least 2 defective bulbs is 0.05. Find the probability in each of the following
cases:
(i) The box contains no defective bulbs.
(ii) The box contains exactly 1 defective bulb.
(iii) The box contains at most 1 defective bulb.

2. A bowl contains 16 chips, of which 6 are red, 7 are white, and 3 are blue. If four chips are taken at random
and without replacement, find the probability that:
(a) each of the 4 chips is red; (b) none of the 4 chips is red; (c) there is at least 1 chip of each color.

3. Three distinct integers are chosen at random from the first 20 positive integers. Compute the probability that
their product is even.

4 Two fair dice are tossed together. Find the probability that the product of the numbers on the upper face is
divisible by 6.

5. What is the probability of getting 9 cards of the same suit in one hand at a game of bridge (i.e. total cards in
one hand =13)

6. If the letters of the word “REGULATIONS” be arranged as random what is the chances that there will be
exactly 4 letters between R and E?

7. A Box contains 40 envelopes, of which 25 are ordinary (not meant for air mail) and 16 are unstamped,
while the number of unstamped ordinary envelopes is 10. What is the probability that an envelope chosen from
the box is stamped air mail envelope?

8. A committee of 5 people is to be formed randomly from a group of 10 women and 6 men. Find the
probability that the committee has
a) 3 women and 2 men.
a) 4 women and 1 men.
b) 5 women.
c) at least 3 women.

9. There are six men and seven women in a ballroom dancing class. If four men and four women are chosen
and paired off, how many pairings are possible?

10. There are 3 arrangements of the word DAD, namely DAD, ADD, and DDA. How many arrangements are
there of the word PROBABILITY?
