What is Communication?
The Word Communication has originated from a Latin word "COMMUNIS" which means, "Something
Common". Communication is a process of exchanging ideas, thoughts, feelings and emotions through
speech, signals, writing or behavior. It is the ability to use language ( receptive) and express (expressive)
information.
Effective communication skills are a critical element in your career and personal lives.

COMMUNICATION PROCESS:
This process refers to the transmission of information or message from the sender through a selected
channel to the receiver overcoming barriers that affect its pace. It is a cyclic process as it begins with the
sender and ends with the sender in the form of feedback. It must be a continuous and dynamic
interaction.

Sender:
He is the initiator of the message that needs to be transmitted. After having generated the idea,
thought or information the sender encodes it in such a manner that can be well understood by the
receiver.
Encoding:
It is outing the targeted message into appropriate medium which may be verbal or non verbal
depending upon the situation and nature of message to be sent. The sender puts the message into a
series of symbols , pictures or words which will be communicated to the intended receiver.
Medium:
It refers to the way or mode the message flows or is transmitted through which links the sender with the
receiver.
Receiver:
Receiver is the person or group who the message is meant for. The receiver needs to comprehend the
message sent in the best possible manner such that the true intent of the communication is achieved.
Receiver is a s important as sender. The extent to which the receiver decodes the message depends on
his knowledge, subject matter and experience.
Decoding:
Feedback:
It is the ultimate aspect to ensure that the message has been effectively encoded, sent, decoded and
comprehended. It is the final step of the communication process and establishes that the receiver has
correctly interpreted the message as it was intended by the sender.

• Oral (In oral communication , spoken words are used it includes face to face conversation
speech telephonic voice radio etc)
• Written (Written communication involves any type of interaction that make use of written
word)
Barriers to communication:
• Semantic (symbols with different meanings, badly expressed message, faulty translation,
unclarified assumption, Specialist's language)
• Emotional or psychological (inattention, loss of transmission, failure to communicate)
• Organizational (organizational policy, rules and regulations, complexity)
• Personal barriers (attitude, fear of challenge, lack of time, lack of awareness, unwillingness to
communicate, lack of proper incentive,)
In addition noise, language differences and assumptions also act as barrier in communication.
