UNIT-I
1. á Derive an expression for Vorticity in a two-dimensional flow. 9M
b Determine which of the following pairs of velocity components u and v satisfy the 6M
continuity equation for a two-dimensional flow of an incompressible fluid:

2. a In two-dimensional incompressible flow, show that the flow rate per unit width 7M
between two stream lines is equal to the difference between the values of the stream
function corresponding to these stream lines.
b Water is flowing through a pipe having diameter 300mm and 200mm at the bottom 8M
and upper end, respectively. The intensity of pressure at the bottom end is 245.25
kN/m and the pressure at the upper end is 98.1 kN/m. Determine the difference in
datum head, if the rate of flow through pipe is 0.04 cumecs.

3. State the assumptions made in the derivation of Hagen-Poiseuille equation. 6M
b An oil having viscosity of 143 poise and specific gravity 0.9 flows through a pipe 9M
25mm diameter and 300m long at 1/10 of the critical velocity for which Reynolds
number is 2500. Find i) the velocity of flow through the pipe; i) the head in meters
of oil across the pipe length required to maintain the flow; and ii) the power of the
flow.

4. a Discuss the basic differences between the Euler's equations of motion and Navier- 6M
Stokes equation?
b Show that the discharge per unit width between two parallel plates distance h apart, 9M
when one plate is moving at velocity U while the other one is held stationary, for the
condition of zero shear stress at the fixed plate is q=hU/3.

flow over a flat plate.

6. a Discuss in detail the factors affecting the boundary layer thickness? 6M
b A plate is held immersed in water flowing with a uniform velocity of 4m/s. Find the 9M
point at which the laminar flow ceases from the leading edge of the plate. Also find
the thickness of the boundary layer at this point. Take the kinematic viscosity of
water to be 1.0 x 10m/s.
