The Magnificent 40
40 Years of Excellence in Service to Humanity
President: Dear Friends,
Rtn. Dr. Srikanth AVS Anniversaries are always special. And if it is the 40th Anniversary
Immediate Past President:
of your own Club it definitely calls for something extraordinary. To
Rtn. Manoj Agrawal
celebrate this momentous occasion, we would like to present the
President Elect:
epic saga of the illustrious Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar, with
Rtn. Fazal Ur Rahaman
Vice-President:
great pride, pleasure and gratitude. A story that was penned 40
Rtn. AK Sugunan years ago, authored by a group of like-minded people, with the
Secretary: sole objective of serving the community, has resulted in the
Rtn. Balakrishnan Narayanan creation of one of the best service-oriented organisations in the world.
Joint Secretary: I always wanted to chronicle the achievements of all the Presidents and PDGs of
Rtn. Supriya Kandhari RBI after I was handed over the baton of the Bulletin Editor. What better and
Director Club Service: opportune moment than the 40th Anniversary Celebrations to release this Special
Rtn. Vipin Labroo Edition, I thought? I was completely enthused with this idea and immediately started
Director Community work in earnest. The greatest challenge was to contact some of the Past Presidents
Service: who had left our Club and were in different corners of the globe. The other challenge
Rtn. Philip George was locating the pictures for the installation of a few Past Presidents. A task
Dy. Director Community comparable to seeking the proverbial needle in the haystack.
Service:
Rtn. Manju Verma After ransacking the shelves of RHoS, scanning tens of albums and going through
Director Youth Service: hundreds of photographs, I was very fortunate to chance upon some rare and hidden
Rtn. Gopinath N gems. I must express my sincere gratitude here to Kittu Sir, and C. M. Narayanan
Director Vocational Service: Sir, without whose help and support, it would have been almost impossible to
Rtn. Narssimhan Kannan unearth the information of some of the Past Presidents. I was astounded with their
Director International memory and the manner in which they have preserved the archives of our glorious
Service: past. I would also like to earnestly thank Doc Simha for penning his thoughts about
Rtn. Ambica Motupalli Uday Sir in such an eloquent manner.
Sergeant-At-Arms:
Rtn. Saravanan As the Special Edition began to take shape, it dawned on us that there is an uncanny
Treasurer: connection between the serial number of every president and his/her personal
Rtn. Baskar Moorthy attributes. In doing so, we have clearly steered away from any numerological
Bulletin Editor: affiliations. Due to space constraints, I have been compelled to edit some of the
Rtn. Kavita S Kekre information provided. Kindly accept my sincere apologies for the same. However,
Fund Raising Chair: all efforts have been made, and care taken, to highlight the importance and
Rtn. Ram Mohan Menon significance of each of the presidentships.
Co-opted Directors:
PP Rtn. Dr. S. N. Simha
This mammoth undertaking would not have been possible without the strong backing
PP Rtn. Karthikeya K Reddy of Sharada, Vidhya and Narsi, despite their busy schedules. Thanks to Vidhya and
PP Rtn. Shashank Kekre Narsi for gently persuading me to adopt an apt cover page for the special occasion.
Advisors: I would be failing in my duty if I did not express my gratitude to all the Past Presidents
PP Rtn. N Krishnamurthy (including Shashank, my husband) and the current President, Dr. AVS Srikanth for
PDG Rtn. Badri Prasad their unstinted support and cooperation. That is the greatness of RBI’s leaders.
PDG Rtn. Suresh Hari
We sincerely hope and pray that you will enjoy this journey of the last 40 years
PP Rtn. Mahesh Parikh
through the eyes of the Magnificent 40, as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to
Avenue Coordinators: you. And whenever you think of the history of RBI, you will also reach out to this

The Pioneer of Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar

The Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar (RBI) family recently lost
its founding father, Charter President S Uday Kumar. It is
unfortunate that he will not be there to see his child turn forty.
After graduating with a First Class in Mechanical
Engineering, Uday worked for some years with Larsen and
Toubro, where he learnt the importance of discipline, hard
work and integrity. He then moved to Bengaluru and set up
business in electrical products.
His journey in Rotary saw him become a member of Rotary
Madurai West, Rotary Cochin and Rotary Bangalore East. He
was then asked to start a new Rotary Club to cover the highly
potential areas of Indiranagar, extending all the way to
Whitefield. And Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar was chartered
as the eighth Rotary Club of our City on June 11, 1981.
What began as yet another Rotary Club with twenty-three Charter members has now grown into perhaps one of
the best Clubs in the Rotary World.
His contribution to make RBI a strong and vibrant service force is seminal. He believed that a voluntary
organisation must be professionally run, with the highest ethical standards. Membership in Rotary must be lifetime.
He would say that there is no room for temporary members!
I joined RBI in 1983 February. I was told by my fellow Rotarians about the beginnings of our Club. What was
obvious was Uday’s passion for Rotary and the clarity of his thoughts. Some instances were kind of funny; Uday
standing at the entrance of the room where our meetings were held and catching truant members who had missed
meetings!
For many years, all of us have been at the receiving end of his famous early morning phone calls. The joke was
that initially, Uday had to dial numbers. Then he just called out the name
and he would be connected. And finally, his landline phone would dial
automatically!! This demonstrated his intense desire to get things done.
As years went by, many of us did the same; follow up relentlessly to
ensure that things happened as planned.
Uday was an enormous support to every single President. He would call
up the incoming President, wish him well and ask what was needed of
him. He was the first to contribute very generously to any cause. He would
always say “You contribute what you can first, before asking others”
In the very early years of our Club, the senior leadership was convinced
that we must have a building of our own. Uday decided that we must think
of innovative ways to raise funds and with this came a series of
exhibitions: ROTEX 84, 87,89 and 90, covering industrial products,
automobiles, electronics and consumer goods. The proceeds of these
made it possible to buy a site and build Rotary House of Service.
I had the privilege of serving as Home Club President when Uday became
District Governor in 1989. The R I theme was “Enjoy Rotary” and we
certainly did!

I can write a PhD thesis on Uday’s contribution to strengthening Rotary

during his Governorship. He introduced the concept of “Zone Coordinator”,
which has now become Assistant Governor. His ICGFs had eminent
speakers from other Districts.
The R I President’s Citation Programme, with points for various activities
including for hours spent in service by individual members, was an
interesting concept and Uday promoted it with enthusiasm. This resulted in
innovative projects, occasionally with the sole intent of getting more points!
Uday was responsible for introducing the amazing power of Matching
Grants. He conceived a Rural Water Supply Project with funding from nine
Rotary Districts in the USA and The Rotary Foundation. Our Rotary Clubs
did not have to contribute a single rupee. The total budget was Rs. 12 lakhs
in 1989. The project consisted of building a storage tank with taps and piping
from an already existing bore well with good yield, in forty-two villages of our
District. Many of the Governors of the American Rotary Districts had come
to us as GSE team leaders and stayed with Uday!
His District Conference was gigantic. A mini township was created in the
Palace Grounds. And 3500 delegates (90% of Rotarians and
75% of the spouses) attended these two and a half days of
amazing speakers and awesome entertainment.
He was (with late PDG Rtn. Prithvi Rawal) one of the first
recipients of the Service Above Self Award in 1992-93. He
was also bestowed with the Rotary Foundation Meritorious
Service Award and Distinguished Service Award for support
to TRF.
On a personal note, he was my Rotary Guru. He saw
potential in me and dragged me into the limelight. The respect
that he gave me as his Club President was exemplary. I was
(with, amongst others, Kittu, Parasmal, OP, Raja and CMN)
a part of his innermost circle. I had a ringside seat as I
witnessed the Rotary year unfolding, with great enthusiasm
demonstrated by all the Rotarians of the District. Uday had an excellent
tenure as District Governor.
It is difficult to talk about his qualities of head and heart in a few words.
He was a man of impeccable character, a visionary, honest to the core,
working for causes with absolutely no personal gain, impatient and just
not able to suffer fools. We did not agree with him at times. This only
strengthened our bonds of friendship.
Our heartfelt condolences to Kamalavadani, Suresh, Karthik and the
entire family. We miss him as much as they all do. He was a colossus
in Rotary, and we are very fortunate to have had him as our mentor.
May peace be upon his Soul!

~ PP Rtn. Dr. Nagesh Simha
