ACTIVITY # 7 (Online activity)
ANSWER ACTIVITY # 7 (INDIVIDUAL SUBMISSION)
A. Read “Letter of Rizal to Mariano Ponce” on April 18,1889. How did the event change
Rizal’s views?

Letter of Rizal to Mariano Ponce on the Effect of the Execution of the

GOMBURZA *

18 Cochechouart St., Paris

April 18, 1889
My Beloved Friend,

m
er as
I just received your letter today together with the La Solidaridad. This issue is truly

co
done well and the newspaper can be said to have truly grown.

…It is not a crime to possess anti-friar books. This is the hand of fate, and even though
rs e
we deplore it as a private evil, we must applaud it as a public good. Without 1872 we would not
ou urc
now have Plaridel, nor Jaena, nor Sanciano, nor would there exist the brave and unselfish
Filipinos in Europe; without 1872, Rizal, in place of writing Noli Me Tangere. . . . would have
written its opposite. At the sight of these injustices and cruelties, even as a child my imagination
o

was awakened and I swore to dedicate my life to avenge so many victims; and it is with this idea
aC s

that I have been studying. This may be seen in all my works and writings; God gave me the
vi y re

opportunity some day to carry out my promise! Well! If they commit abuses, if there are
prisoners, banishments, executions, very well! This, the fulfillment of Destiny! The day in which
they put a hand on us, the day in which they martyr our innocent families for our crimes, good-
bye friar government, and perhaps, good-bye Spanish government! This cruelties and egotism of
ed d

Louis XIV brought on the Revolution; the cruelties of the Inquisition killed monarchism. We will
ar stu

say in our books and writings that the friars are not what they pretend to be, are not ministers of
Christ, are not protectors of the country. This we will write and affirm, and the friars will prove it
with their deeds. What more should we want? Have they not shown cruelty? Have they not urged
is

the government to act against the people? Have they not manifested terror and fear?

Rizal

Answer: Rizal became enraged after the execution of GOMBURZA. It seemed like something
snapped something in him—a spark of nationalism. The execution of GOMBURZA served as an
sh

eye opener for Rizal and awakened him with all the cruelties and injustices of the Spaniards,
specifically the friars. He swore to dedicate his life in avenging the victims of the abuses by
studying and revealing all the secrets of the friars through his works and writings. He promised
to fulfil this duty till his death.

B. Read the dedication page of the El Filibusterismo. Why did Rizal dedicate the El
Filibusterismo to the GOMBURZA?

Dedication of Dr. Jose Rizal in the El Filibusterismo

To the memory
of the priests, Don Mariano Gomez (85 years old),
Don José Burgos (30 years old),
and Don Jacinto Zamora (35 years old).
Executed in Bagumbayan Field, on the 28th (sic) of February, 1872.

The Church, by refusing to degrade you, has placed in doubt the crime that has been
imputed to you; the Government, by surrounding your trials with mystery and shadows, causes

m
er as
the belief that there was some error, committed in fatal moments; and all the Philippines, by
worshiping your memory and calling you martyrs, in no sense recognizes your culpability.

co
eH w
In so far, therefore, as your complicity in the Cavite mutiny is not clearly proved, as you

o.
may or may not have been patriots, and as you may or may not have cherished sentiments for
rs e
justice and for liberty, I have the right to dedicate my work to you as victims of the evil which I
ou urc
undertake to combat. And while we await expectantly upon Spain some day to restore your good
name and cease to be answerable for your death, let these pages serve as a tardy wreath of dried
leaves over your unknown tombs, and let it be understood that everyone who without clear
o

proofs attacks your memory stains his hands in your blood!

Answer: The execution of GOMBURZA was a turning point in our history. Rizal initially
ar stu

wanted to be a Jesuit priest but when he heard about their execution, their death awakened strong
feelings of anger and resentment among Filipinos, most especially Rizal. He dedicated El
Filibusterismo, which main theme is to convey the message that the system of government in the
is

Philippines governed by corrupt officials and dominated by the friars can lead to the downfall of
Th

the Spaniards, to GOMBURZA because they are the ones who inspired him to do everything in
the first place. Their deaths lead the rise of the book which will open our mind and hearts that the
colonization would be at end, and sparked the beginning of the Propaganda movement.

C. Reflection Writing:

Why was the GOMBURZA execution an IMPORTANT event in Rizal’s life? Why did
Rizal dedicate the El Filibusterismo to the three Filipino priests?

The execution of GOMBURZA was a turning point in our history. Rizal initially wanted
to be a Jesuit priest but when he heard about their execution, their death awakened strong
feelings of anger and resentment among Filipinos, most especially Rizal. It seemed like
something snapped something in him—a spark of nationalism. The execution of GOMBURZA
served as an eye opener for Rizal and awakened him with all the cruelties and injustices of the
Spaniards, specifically the friars. He swore to dedicate his life in avenging the victims of the

abuses by studying and revealing all the secrets of the friars through his works and writings. He

promised to fulfil this duty till his death. He dedicated El Filibusterismo to the three Filipino

co
priests because they are the ones who inspired him to do everything in the first place. Their

eH w
deaths lead the rise of the book which will open our mind and hearts that the colonization would

o.
be at end. They questioned Spanish authorities and demanded reforms. The martyrdom of the
rs e
three priests apparently helped to inspire the organization of the Propaganda Movement, which
ou urc
aimed to seek reforms and inform Spain of the abuses of its colonial government. This sparks the
beginning of the Propaganda Movement and later on led to the Philippine Revolution against
Spain.

D. Read the excerpt from Rizal’s Philippines a Century Hence”.

THE AWAKENING OF THE NATIONALIST SPIRIT*

… There now exists a factor which was formerly lacking -- the spirit of the nation has been
aroused and a common misfortune, a common debasement has united all the inhabitants of the
Islands. A numerous enlightened class now exists within and without the Islands, a class created
and continually augmented by the stupidity of certain governing powers, which forces the
inhabitants to leave the country, to secure education abroad, and it is maintained thanks to the
provocation and the system of espionage in vogue. This class, whose number is cumulatively
increasing, is in constant communication with the rest of the Islands, and if today it constitutes
only the brain of the country in a few years it will form the whole nervous system and manifest
its existence in all its acts

E. According to Rizal, who will continue the objectives that were started by the
Secularization movement? How did he describe them?
o
aC s

Answer: The secularization movement led to a new era of propaganda or reform movement
vi y re

which was organized and participated by the illustrados. These people belonged to the
enlightened or upper – middle class. Rizal described them as people who are educated and can
withstand the stupidity of the governing powers. They were scions of good families, highly
intelligent, educated, patriotic, and courageous, who symbolized the flower of Filipino manhood.

They had the power to oppose and question the injustices of the Spaniards.

and the Reform Movement.” What are the objectives/aims of the reform movement?
Th

Objectives of the Reform Movement

There is an aspiration for a comfortable life in the Philippines; the tax payers, the country
sh

who is supporting the flag of Spain through their farms and through their blood – this loyal
country is aware that he is not only composed of flocks of sheep.
This country is not asking for any kind of sacrifice from Spain; all it asks is to be
governed properly, or if not, to understand our cause, and for the country to be heard through
legitimate governance.

We ask for assimilation; we are asking as it is our right that for the said islands to be part
of Spain.*

of Marcelo H. del Pilar. He started to be an editor for La Solidaridad on December 1889. It was

Objective of the La Solidaridad and the Reform Movement*

Our aspirations are modest, very modest. Our program, aside from being simple, is
clear: to combat reaction, to stop all retrogressive steps, to extol and adopt liberal ideas, to
defend progress; in a word, to be a propagandist, above all, of democratic ideas in order to
make these supreme in all nations here and across the seas.

The aims, therefore, of La Solidaridad are described as to collect, to gather, libertarian

ideas which are manifested daily in the field of politics, science, art, literature, commerce,
agriculture and industry.

We shall also discuss all problems relating to the general interest of the nation and seek

solutions to those problems in high-level and democratic manner.
rs e

With regard to the Philippines, since she needs the most help, not being represented in
the Cortes, we shall pay particular attention to the defense of her democratic rights, the
accomplishment of which is our patriotic duty.

Answer: The reform movement aim for assimilation where in the Philippines is treated as an
integral part of Spain like a province and not a colony. Their objective is for the Filipino natives
is

to become citizens, treated with equality as the Spaniards—to have freedom within the context
of Spain rule. The natives would enjoy all rights and privileges of Spanish citizens. They would
Th

also be obliged to discards the duties of Spanish citizens; hence, they could not be treated
cruelly by the friars and civil authorities. The demand for political prerogative was clear.
