Position: Concurrent Disorders Recovery Support Worker Fraser St. temporary full time May 2/11 to Sept
30/11 or on return of the incumbent.

A strong background in mental health and addictions knowledge, skills, experience is needed.

1.0FTE 77.5 hours biweekly Salary Range: Grid 10 $20.11 - $21.83

Job Summary: Reporting to the Program Manager or designate, the Concurrent Disorders Recovery Support Worker
provides a range of supports for individuals living in the community with a mental illness and who are in recovery from a
substance use addiction. Using a strengths-based model, the Support Worker participates with tenants, the housing staff
team and treatment providers in the development and implementation of service plans that assist the tenant in maintaining
a substance-free lifestyle. This includes: assessment; goal setting, implementation and review; resource acquisition; and
monitoring in the areas of daily living, financial, vocational/educational, social supports, housing, culture,
leisure/recreational, physical health and mental health and addiction recovery. The Support Worker works closely and
collaboratively with housing staff team, family and external service providers, advocating for access and rights as needed.
The Support Worker also provides daily supports including medication administration, building security, crisis intervention,
health and recreational groups and general problem solving.

Fraser Street provides supported housing for people living in the community with a mental illness who want to live a
substance-free life. It is an alcohol and drug-free facility located outside of the Downtown Eastside, providing the
infrastructure and support to help clients achieve long-term health and stability. Tenants are provided with a full range of
support services, including social and recreational opportunities, life skills assistance, support in achieving their treatment
goals, and support in finding and maintaining employment. The 24 hour staff presence ensures the building remains a
safe haven for the tenants. The tenants are supported by the staff within the Fraser Street Program as well as by
community agencies and services

Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience

A Diploma in community social services


One year of recent, related work experience with people with a mental illness who are in recovery from a
substance use addiction
Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience emphasizing mental health and
addictions skills and knowledge
Current First Aid and CPR certification.
Class 5 driver’s license.

• Basic sound knowledge of mental health diagnoses, medications, treatment and support resources
• Knowledge of the bio-psychosocial addictions model, including the transtheoretical model of change,
harm reduction, motivational interviewing, and relapse prevention and intervention strategies.
• Basic sound knowledge of relevant physical health issues (e.g. HIV and Hepatitis C), including
diagnoses, treatment and support resources.
• Knowledge of the housing continuum, including market, subsidized and supported housing systems,
including program models for special needs populations
• Basic knowledge of aboriginal culture, community and health resources.
• Demonstrates understanding of oppression and marginalization, specifically as related to aboriginal
people and people living with a mental illness or addiction.

Hours of work: includes ½ hour unpaid meal period

Mon – Fri 3pm – 11:15pm
