Description

Bioascorbic Acid is Biocon's antioxidant specifically developed for use in beer. Bioascorbic
Acid, which contains sodium Iso Ascorbate as an active ingredient, has a very low Redox
potential and thus effectively removes oxygen from the beer.

Beer during storage undergoes gradual alteration, as small quantities of dissolved oxygen
results in oxidation of polyphenols and proteins causing undesirable flavours, aroma changes,
cloudiness and development of dark red colour. Bioascorbic Acid protects the beer against
these changes by effectively removing the dissolved oxygen.

Benefits

Bioascorbic Acid has several advantages over other reducing agents commonly used in
beer.

2. Bioascorbic Acid does not impart any offtaste to beer.
3. Bioascorbic Acid efficiently inactivates dissolved and headspace oxygen.
4. Bioascorbic Acid prevents development of oxidation haze in beer.
5. Bioascorbic Acid maintains the colours of the beer.
6. Bioascorbic Acid has a very fast action in beer due to its lower redox potential.
7. Bioascorbic Acid treated beers are not sensitive to light exposure and so are less likely
to develop "light-struck" flavours.

Application

Bioascorbic Acid is a free flowing powder that is readily soluble in cold water and can be
dosed in beer without any problem. Bioascorbic Acid should be dissolved in cold water @ 1
kg / 25 litres.
BIOASCORBIC ACID should be used in beer at the rate of 3 - 5 gms per Hectolitre.
Bioascorbic Acid may be dosed into beer directly in the Bright Beer Tanks.

Packing

Bioascorbic Acid is available in standard 25-kg polythene lined fibre drums but can be
custom packed on request.

3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
Exposure to any kind of dust is potentially harmful. Avoid inhalation and contact with eyes
and skin.

4. FIRST AID MEASURES

Inhalation – remove from exposure. If irritation persists or allergic response develops
consult a doctor.
Skin contact – wash skin with plenty of water.
Contact with eyes – irrigate eyes with cold water for 20-min atleast. Obtain medical advice
if irritation occurs.
Ingestion – rinse mouth thoroughly with water and drink plenty of water afterwards.
Consult a doctor.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

Not applicable. Amorphous powder will not support combustion.

6. HANDLING & STORAGE

Drums and bags should be kept closed and in a dry place. Use local exhaust ventilation
and/or personal protective equipment as necessary to minimise exposure.

7. EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION

Handle in well ventilated conditions in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety
practices.
 Wear suitable overalls.
 Wear suitable gloves and eye protection.
 No eating, drinking or smoking in the work place.
 Practice good personal hygiene.
 Avoid inhalation of dust.

inadequate ventilation or whenever there is any risk of the exposure limits being
exceeded.

Stable. No drop in activity has been found for one year when stored under the specified

Repeated inhalation of dust may cause sensitisation and will cause allergic type reactions
in sensitised individuals. Prolonged skin contact may cause irritation.
