Location Area definition

Set of cells which are paged each time one Terminating Call is initiated

Specified with a unique Location Area Code (LAC)

Position of each MS in a specific Location Area stored in HLR / VLR

MS tells mobile network (using SDCCH resources)
when it moves from one LAC to another (Location Update)
periodically its current LAC position (Periodical LU)

4 | LA and mCCCH | 2008 © Alcatel-Lucent 2008, d.r., XXXXX

4
LA & CCCH

Location Area size

 Trade off between
Signalling load in cells located at LAC border
– SDCCH resources in each cell has to be sized accordingly
Number of simultaneous pagings in each cell of the LAC
– All MS in LAC and in MT call are paged simultaneously

CCCH mapping

Currently in the OMC following channel combinations containing CCCH are

allowed:
BCC = Main BCCH (FCCH + SCH + BCCH + CCCH)
 CBC = Main combined BCCH (FCCH + SCH + BCCH + CCCH + SDCCH/4 + SACCH/4)
 CBH = Main combined BCCH with CBCH (FCCH + SCH + BCCH + CCCH + SDCCH/3 +
SACCH/3 + CBCH)

The signalling load of one RSL corresponds to the total load of the signalling
channels of the corresponding TRX (BCCH, CCCH, SDCCH, SACCH,
FACCH). The signalling load of the TRX which carries BCCH /CCCH
increases with the paging load, cell load, and depends also on number of
SDCCH channels mapped on the TRX.

Location Area & Routing Area dimensioning (Abis approach)

If (CS+PS) Paging load is less than 60% of PCH channel capacity:
The LA size is OK (no overload)
It is possible to keep RA size = LA size

Note:
• (CS+PS) Paging load = MC8a
• 60% represents engineering limit

Location Area & Routing Area dimensioning (Abis approach)

If (CS+PS) Paging load is greater than 60% of PCH channel capacity and
if PS Paging load/(CS+PS) Paging load is greater than 20% then:
Is necessary to have RA size < LA size, so LA must be splitted in two or more RAs.

If (CS+PS) Paging load is still greater than 60% of PCH channel capacity

Multiple CCCH
 Available with B10

 More BSC signalling capacity

Higher number of SDCCH per cell allowed

2 CCCH time slots per cell will be possible
up to 22 SDCCH Time slots (instead of 11) or 176 sub-channels per cell
– Dynamic or not
Benefits
Increase GSM signalling capacity in Dense Urban Areas (paging, SMS..)
Needed for cells with huge traffic >100E
Ex : 16 FR TRX with Alcatel traffic model
All the more needed if those BTSs support a significant packet traffic
Necessary in future for high GPRS load as MPCCH is not available

34
mCCCH

Multiple CCCH

The multiple CCCH is required to support the increasing signalling load on the common
channels, due to either big CS cells with high peak throughput or to PS traffic when no
master PDCH is configured.
The multiple CCCH feature can be implemented in both G2BSC and MxBSC. Only TS0 and
TS2 on beacon TRX will be used for multiple CCCH. When there is only one CCCH, it is on
TS0 only.
0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Beacon TRX

CCCH

It is possible to apply the mCCCH configuration when the Master PDCH is implemented.
The number of CCCH is given by configuration. No dynamic algorithm is implemented to
change the number of CCCH as a function of the CCCH load.

Channel combinations
Previously in the OMC following channel combinations containing CCCH were
allowed (TS0):

BCC = Main BCCH (FCCH + SCH + BCCH + CCCH)

 CBC = Main combined BCCH (FCCH + SCH + BCCH + CCCH + SDCCH/4 + SACCH/4)

 CBH = Main combined BCCH with CBCH (FCCH + SCH + BCCH + CCCH + SDCCH/3 +
SACCH/3 + CBCH)

A new channel combination is now implemented on TS2 of the beacon TRX:

CCH = BCCH + CCCH (where CCCH = PCH + RACH + AGCH)

36 | LA and mCCCH | 2008 © Alcatel-Lucent 2008, d.r., XXXXX

36
mCCCH

Configuration Rules
The following set of rules applies for the configuration of Multiple CCCH:

CCH should be configured on TS2 of BCCH TRX

When BCCH is combined with SDCCH, CCH cannot be configured.
In BCCH TRX, when CCH is configured, only one Static SDCCH is allowed

In the cell with both BCC and CCH, the max number of SDCCH TS is extended
to 22

 CBC and CBH are forbidden

DYN SDCCH is forbidden on BCCH TRX
Multiple CCCH is not supported in Extended Cell and VGCS

37 | LA and mCCCH | 2008 © Alcatel-Lucent 2008, d.r., XXXXX

37
mCCCH

Relation between Nb of CCCH and Nb of SDCCH

Only one SDCCH or the SDCCH combined with CBCH can be configured on the
Beacon TRX when 2 CCCH are configured in TS0 and TS2.
 FCCH + SCH + BCCH + CCCH on TS0
 BCCH + CCCH on TS2
 SDCCH/8 + SACCH/8 on TS1/TS3/TS4/TS5/TS6/TS7 or
SDCCH/7 + SACCH/7 + CBCH on TS1/TS3
The maximum number of SDCCH TS in the cell:
11 if there is one CCCH (88 sub-channels)
22 if there are two CCCH (176 sub-channels)

Note:
Since there is at least one Static SDCCH TS in the cell, when multiple CCCH is
configured, there are max 21 DYN SDCCH TS in the cell.

Related Load Aspects

One CCCH time slot is roughly equivalent to an SDCCH time slot
(1 SDCCH load = 1 CCCH load)
1 RSL is sufficient to carry the signalling information of 2 CCCH, if the number
of SDCCH TS on this TRX is limited to 1.

Feature activation
 From OMC-R
 Step1:
– Select the cell to be configured with Multiple CCCH
 Step2:
– Modify the Radio TS2 of BCCH TRX from TCH to CCCH

 Note: For BBH on TS2

For mCCCH activation on TS2, it is necessary to change manualy from OMC the type of FH
from BBH to NH for TS2. Also the FHS must be changed.

Else, the OMC don’t allow to change it from TCH to CCH.

In fact, the type of hopping and the hopping sequence of TS2 must be changed to be the
same as for TS0 (BCC).

64
LA dimensioning in B10

Location Area dimensioning

There is no relationship between the BSC paging mechanism and CCCH

configuration.
The BSC has just the task of broadcasting paging messages per LAC.

If paging coming from MSC has a high rate, the BSC will send on Abis paging
commands at high speed, ignoring the fact that some cells are not able to
send it.
As a consequence, some paging commands shall be discarded by cells with
less radio capacity compared with BSC capacity for sending paging on Abis.

65
LA dimensioning in B10

Location Area dimensioning

The Paging load must be assessed during busy hour.

If the paging rate on Abis doesn’t exceed 33 paging/s, cells with 1 CCCH TS
may be used without loses.
If the paging rate is higher (up to 66 paging/s), all the cells in LAC should
be configured with 2 CCCH TS, to avoid paging messages to be discarded.

If the paging rate per LAC is higher than 66 paging/s, the LAC should be
split.

The PCH and AGCH load assessment is much easy due to new possibilities to
check:
 CCCH channels occupancy
 CCCH channels load
 CCCH channel congestion
Location Area dimensioning is more flexible
 More capacity available
