A JAPANESE TRADITION
Of the myriad of Japanese ceremonies introduced to the West, the Japanese tea
ceremony would have to be the least (1. ACCESS) . Like many other
aspects of Japanese culture, the practice of drinking tea was brought from China well
over a thousand years ago. In Japan, green tea developed its own character, and the
Japanese tea ceremony has Japanese phenomenon. The modern tea ceremony can
be traced back to the 17th century when it developed alongside another singular
Japanese adaptation of Chinese culture: the philosophy of Zen.
The tea ceremony eventually became established as a recognized form of high art,
where it was evolved into a (2. PECULIAR) practised in diverse (3.
LOCATE) from a Zen temple to an ordinary home. Even today, the
simplest and most secular tea ceremony still embraces the Zen aesthetics of Chinese
culture and devotion, simplicity, (4. AUSTERE) .
During the ceremony strictly prescribed words of invitation and (5. GRATEFUL)
are murmured quietly; tea makers and guests play their roles with (6.
HUMBLE) and respect. A brief moment of profound tranquility has
been (7. COMMUNE) created and shared. It is simultaneously an
aesthetic, social and spiritual moment. (8. SIGNIFY) , it is a Japanese
moment, fleeting and poignant with its own (9. PEACE) where the noise
and confusion of the everyday world is temporarily suspended as a vague, (10.
DEFINE) sense of the eternal pervades.

Ask any adult over forty to make a (1. COMPARE) between the past and
the present and most will tell you that things have been getting steadily worse for as
long as they can remember. Take the weather for example. Everyone remembers that
in their (2. YOUNG) the summers were considerably hotter, and that
winter always included (3. ABOUND) falls of snow just when the school
holidays had started. Of course, the food in those days was far superior too, as nothing
was imported and everything was fresh. (4. EMPLOY) was negligible,
the money in your pocket really was worth something, and you could buy a (5. SIZE)
house even if your means were limited. And above all, people were
somehow nicer in those days, and spent their free time on innocent (6. PURSUE)
making model boats and tending their stamp (7. COLLECT)
rather than gazing at the television screen for hours on end. As we know, this figure of
the past simply cannot be true, and there are plenty of statistics dealing with heath and
(8. PROSPER) which prove that it is not true. So, why is it that we all have
a (9. TEND) to idealize the past and to be so (10. CRITISIZE) of
the presents?
