DIFFERENT LIGHT SOURCES

Light is a form of energy. It is around you every day. It plays a very

important role in your lives. Without light you would not be able to see. Light
comes from different sources. The sun is the main source of light that
brightens your surroundings.
There are two sources of light: natural and artificial. Natural light
comes from nature. Artificial light comes from man-made sources.
Natural sources of light come to Earth through natural means which
man cannot control. The sun is an example of a natural source of light. The
moonlight we see at night is part of the sunlight reflected from the surface of
the moon. The stars also light up the sky at night. Fireflies and glowworms are
other examples. These are found in nature and produce light that cannot be
made by people.

Light may also come from artificial sources, or those made by people.
Artificial light comes from sources which man produce and control. These
are the flashlight, electric lights, fireworks, gas lamps, gas stove, and oil
lamps. These things can produce light with the use of fuel, batteries, and
electricity.

2
LUMINOUS AND NONLUMINOUS OBJECTS
Objects that produce their own light are called luminous objects. The sun
and stars are bodies in outer space that are naturally luminous. Fireflies are
also naturally luminous.
Lamps, torches, candles, flashlights, burning charcoal, and light bulbs
are objects that are artificially luminous.
Some luminous objects give off white light when they are connected to
a source of electricity. An example is the fluorescent lamp. Still other luminous
objects contain materials that make them glow in the dark. Examples of these
are some toys, ball pens, wristwatches, and other accessories.
Nonluminous objects are objects that cannot produce their own light
and do not glow in the dark. Example of these objects are paper, wood, glass,
and plastic.
