Question 1 DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS [30]
Water flows through a pipe of 2 cm inside diameter at 1.6 m/s with a kinematic viscosity of
1.31 x 10-6 m2/s and the density of 1000 kg/m3 and for air flowing in the same pipe, the
kinematic, and density are 15.1 x 10-6 m2/s and 1.19 kg/m3 respectively.
a) Calculate the Reynolds number and find also the velocity required to give the same
Reynolds number when the pipe is transporting air. (6)
b) Construct a table of properties/Variables, units and dimensions for both fluids. (9)
c) Perform dimensional analysis using Bucking-π theorem to obtain the ratio of pressures
𝑃𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟
( ) for both cases. (15)

Nitrogen gas (MM = 28 kg/kmol and μ= 1.77x10-5 Pa-s) is flowing through a 100 mm outside
diameter commercial steel pipe that is 2.5 mm thick, with roughness parameter, e of 0.046 mm, at
a temperature of 298 K. The total mass flow rate is 80 g/s and the flow condition can be assumed
isothermal. The pipe is 2.8 km long and the inlet pressure is 200 kPa. Universal gas constant, R =
8314.5 J/(mol-K). Calculate the outlet pressure.
