1
Question 1 [24]

1. A reservoir of glycerine has a mass of 1200 kg and a volume of 0.952 m3. Find
the
a) Glycerine’s weight (3)
b) Density (3)
c) Specific weight (3)
d) Specific gravity and (3)
e) The specific volume. (3)

2. The velocity distribution within the fluid flowing over a plate is given by where u is
the velocity in (m/s) and y is a distance above the plate in (m). Determine the shear
stress at y=0 and at y=0.2 m. take that μ=8.4 poise. (9)

Question 2 [16]

A general time-independent non-Newtonian liquid of density 961 kg/m3 flows steadily

with an average velocity of 1.523 m/s through a tube 3.048 m long with an inside
diameter of 0.0762 m. For these conditions, the pipe flow consistency coefficient K
has a value of 1.48 Pa.s0.3. Calculate the following:

a) The apparent viscosity for pipe flow, (5)

b) The Reynolds number and the (3)
c) The Darcy frictional factor, (4)
d) The pressure drop across the tube (4)

Question 3 [20]

1. The following Figure shows a compound manometer connected to the pipeline

containing oil of SG = 0.8, and a gauge pressure, Pa. How much is the absolute
in kPa. (10)

2
2. Water flowing through a pipe of 20 cm internal diameter at section 1 and 10 cm
at section 2. The discharge through the pipe is 35 L/s. Section 1 is 6 m above the
datum line and section 2 is 2 m above it. If the pressure at section 1 is 245 kPa,
find the intensity of pressure at section 2, i.e. pressure at section 2. Given that ρ
= 1000 kg/m3, μ= 1.0 mPa.s. (10)
