1
Question 1 [25]

The pump is designed to deliver a flow rate of 0.048 m3/s at a height of 24 m with the
input power of 17 KW. The centreline of the pump is 1.8 m below in liquid level of a
storage tank (with vent) containing liquid with a vapor pressure of 200 mm Hg at the
prevailing temperature. The specific gravity of the liquid is 0.75. The pressure drop
due to friction caused by the pipe connecting the tank and the pump is 10 kPa. The
atmospheric pressure is 1 atm, and the NPSHr is 9 m.

a) Determine the available NPSH for the following system, and motivate on whether
the pump position is suitable to avoid cavitation. (15)
b) Compute the efficiency of the pump. (10)

Question 2 [25]

A pump draws water from a tank and delivers it to another with the surface 25 m above
that of the lower tank. The delivery pipe is 30 m long, 100 bore diameter and has a
friction factor of 0.003. The sum of the minor losses coefficient, K is 4.8. The pump
impeller is 500 mm diameter and revolves at 600 rev/min. The pump is geometrically
similar to another pump with an impeller 550 mm diameter which gave the data below
when running at 900 rev/min. (Hint: Use excel spread sheet for curves plot)

H (m) 37 41 44 45 42 36 28

Q (m3/s) 0 0.016 0.032 0.048 0.064 0.08 0.096

Determine the flow rate and the developed head for:

a) Single pump, (12)
b) Two pumps arranged in parallel. (13)
