QUESTION 2
i. Sketch the side view of a flow pattern of an axial and radial impeller in a baffled
vessel.
ii. State the function of baffle in an agitated vessel and sketch the difference between
the top view of flow pattern for a baffled and un-baffled vessel
(6 marks)
b) From the data of an experiment, it was found out that the discharge (Q) depends on
the head (H) over the weir, acceleration due to gravity (g), length of weir crest (L), height
of the weir crest over the channel bottom (Z), and the kinematic viscosity (v) of the
liquid. A dimensional analysis method known as Buckingham's n-method is used to
check the dimensional homogeneity of the equation of the physical phenomenon of the
system.
i. By referring to the system described above determine the number of variables
(n) and identify the dimension for all variables.
ii. Determine the number of the primary dimensions (k) thus, suggest the number
of ji-term.

QUESTION 3
An elevated storage tank which is open to atmosphere as shown in figure 1 contain water at
27 °C where the density and viscosity are given as 1000 kg/m3 and 8.51x 10"4 Pas
respectively. The water flows out from the tank through a sharp entrance to the pipeline. The
pipe network in the system consists of pipe A and B where the diameter of the pipes are 10
cm and 6 cm respectively. The outlet discharge rate at point 2 is required to be kept a
minimum of 6.3 x 10"3m3/s.
a) By considering both major and minor loses, determine the vertical height W. Take the
coefficient contraction Cc from pipe A to B as 0.4 and the relative roughness of both
pipes as 0.6 mm.
(20 marks)
b) Due to dry season and drought the water level in the tank falls below the level as stated
above. Suggest an improvement to the design so that the minimum flow rate at the outlet
is being kept. Include justification to your suggestion.

QUESTION 4
a) Determine the suitable speed (revolution per second) of the turbine impeller for a fully
turbulent condition which exhibit Reynolds number of 100,000. Subsequently, suggest
the power required for the impeller.
(5 marks)
b) The same agitated vessel is used to mix a synthetic latex compound having a viscosity
and density of 120 Pas and 1100 kg/m3 respectively. By applying the same impeller
speed as in a), determine the power required for this system.

QUESTION 1
a) Sketch the velocity and shear stress profile of a laminar flow in a pipeline and show the
maximum velocity and maximum shear stress.
(6 marks)
b) Pump performance curve may show the capacity of the pump at selected pump net
head.
i. There are two distinct points in a pump performance curve known as shut-off and
free delivery. Present these points on a performance curve and subsequently
identify the pump efficiency at these points.
ii. Table B shows the free delivery and shut-off individual data for pump A, B and C.
State the Free delivery and Shut-off points if all pumps are arranged in series.

QUESTION 2
a) State and describe all the relevant velocity components of the velocity in any point in
an agitated vessel.
(6 marks)
b) From the experimental data, it was found out that the resistance force (R), experienced
by a partially submerged body depends upon the velocity (v), length of the body (I),
viscosity of the fluid (u), density of the fluid (p) and the gravitational acceleration (g). A
dimensional analysis method known as Buckingham's n-method is used to check the
dimensional homogeneity of the equation of the physical phenomenon of the system.
i. By referring to the system described above determine the number of variables
(n) and identify the dimension for all variables.
