SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIETY

MODULE 3: SCIENCE EDUCATION IN THE PHILIPPINES

1. Identify Science and Technology policies that could be adopted or implemented in the Philippines.

In this trying times we realized how important is the health care system of a country in saving the
lives of many people. Thus, I think as much as the government invest in the guns and other weapons of
the military, I think same investment must be given to the health care system. Give nurses the
compensation they deserve for having to work 3 times harder than what they are actually receiving,
laboratories for the studying, examining, and evaluation of samples must be added, and the next time
that this happens again I hope that our country will not just wait for the vaccine but instead are also
developing a vaccine like the other countries. I know that these things are far from reality but if it is
given attention, little by little we can make it and have a health care system that is like or will surpass the
other country. Yes, the Universal Health Care Law is already given to people, so why not prepare and
improve the health care system itself.

2. What are the other government projects and programs available for science education in the
Philippines?

Apart from school systems and science and technology-oriented schools in the country, the
Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has a lot of other programs and projects for science and
technology education in the country.

Under the S&T Manpower Development Programs, the agency is giving scholarships to students
who wish to pursue a science and technology-related course. The DOST S&T Undergraduate Scholarship
for those talented but financially incapable students, the DOST-SEI Merit Scholarship Program p for a
student who is financially capable but is talented in science and math and will pursue science and
technology-related course, and the Junior Level Assistance Program for incoming third-year college
pursuing course related to science and technology. These scholarships will help in making the dreams of
students possible and create people with a heart in science and technology.

There are also programs for strengthening the capabilities of institutions and its members such as
the Project Rescue Initiatives for Science Education, Modules in Science and Mathematics, Development
of Computer-based Teaching, and many more. By the help of these programs the learning experience of
both the students and their instructors will be better and will help add to their past knowledge.

The country is also competing to International Competitions connected to S&T, and there are times
that the contestants from our country are making it to the top of the competition even against the other
countries. Example of these competitions are the International Mathematics Olympiad, International
Software Competition and International Science and Engineering Fair. Inside the country, there are also
competitions and fairs that are conducted to showcase the talents as well as how rich the culture of the
Philippines is, namely National Science Club Month Celebration, Philippine Mathematical Olympiad, Intel
Philippine Science Fair and the likes.
