Design of Two-Way Slab for 5x4m Room

The document provides design details for a two-way slab for a 5m x 4m room with a live load of 4 kN/m^2. The slab depth is calculated as 220mm and the effective span is 4.2m. The maximum bending moment is calculated as 20.97617 kN/m. Reinforcement is designed with 10mm diameter bars at 275mm C/C spacing in the shorter direction and 8mm diameter bars at 190mm C/C spacing in the longer direction.

Design of Two Way Slab

Design a slab for a room of size 5mX4m which carries a live load of 4 KN/m2. Use M20
concrete qnd Fe 415steel for the design. Take bearing = 300mm.

Input:
Dimension of Room ly 5m
lx 4m
Grade of concrete fck 20 KN/m2
Grade of steel fy 415 KN/m2
Clear cover d' 20 mm
Width of wall 300 mm
Concrete Density 25 KN/m3
Live load 4 KN/m2
Width of slab b 1m
xu max/d 0.48

Solution:
Check for the type of Slab
ly/lx = 1.25

REMARK
It is Two way Slab

Depth of slab(Shorter span)

From( IS 456:2000) page 37
span/d = 20
Therefore,
200 mm = 0.2 m

Overall depth = d+d'

D = 220 mm

Effective span, le: least of the following

i) C/C distance b/w bearing (le) = 4300 m
ii) Clear span + eff. Depth l+de = 4200 m

Therefore, effective span, l = 4200 m = 4.2 m

Load calculation
Dead load = b*D*d
= 5.5 KN/m
Live load = 4 KN/m
Floor Finishers load, = 1 KN/m
Total load,W = 10.5 KN/m
Wu = 15.75 KN/m

Ultimate moment
Mux = ax*Wu*le2
Muy = ay*Wu*le2

From( IS 456:2000) page 91

ax = 0.0755
ay = 0.057
Therefore,
Mux = 20.97617 KN/m
Muy = 15.83631 KN/m

Mumax = 20.97617 KN/m

Check for depth

Mumax = 0.36*fck*xumax/d*(1-0.42xumax/d)bd2
d,reqd = 0.110371 m

Since, d reqd < dprov

Its is SAFE

Reinforcement details
Shorter Span
Mux = 0.87*fy*Ast*(1-fy*Ast/b*d*fck)*d
a = 0.87*fy2 = 149835.8 2a 299671.5
b = 0.87*fy*fck*b*d
= 1.44E+09 b2 2.09E+18
c = Mux*fck*b= 419523.3 4ac 2.51E+11

Ast = 0.00029 m2
Ast provided Ast = 0.00029 = 290.4884 m2

Assuming, 10 mm dia bars

Area of one bar ast = 78.53982 mm2

Spacing, Sv = 270.3716 mm

Therefore, provide 10 mm dia bar 275 mm spacinC/C

Along longer direction,

Muy = 0.87*fy*Ast*(1-fy*Ast/b*d*fck)*d
a = 0.87*fy2 = 149835.8 2a 299671.5
b = 0.87*fy*fck*b*d
= 1.44E+09 b2 2.09E+18
c = Muy*fck*b= 3.17E+11 4ac 1.9E+17

Ast = 224.54 mm2

Ast min = 264 mm2

Assume, 8 mm dia bars

ast 50.26548
Sv 190.3996 = 190 mm

Therefore, provide 8 mm dia bar 190 mm spacing C/C
