TEST OF LEARNING AND THINKING STYLE

SUBJECT: SELF
NATURE OF THE TEST: INDIVIDUAL
AIM:
1. To assess the individual preferred styles of Learning / Thinking.
2. To identify the Hemisphere dominance, the ways in which and the levels at
which the information is being processed by the student – teacher.

MATERIAL: Standardized tool of Style of Learning and Thinking by Dr. D.

Venkataraman.

PROCEDURE:
The tester created the peaceful environment and the subject was made comfortable in
a quiet and non- distractive conditions. The tester explained the purpose of the test
and motivated the subject to complete the test and get actively involved in the testing
environment. The latest version of the Style of Learning and Thinking (SOLAT) test
consisting of 100 items related to the specialized functions of the left and right
hemispheres was given to the subject. Each item in the test was provided with three
choices: one representing a specialized function of the left cerebral hemisphere, the
second representing a parallel specialized function of the right hemisphere and the
third is checking of both the items representing the integration of right and left
hemisphere functions. The subject was asked to indicate which of the three specified
styles of thinking / learning best described his / her typical behaviour. The subject was
asked to be sure and clear about his/her decision making process.

The tester further provided clear instructions to the subject regarding the test items
like:

For each item there are two statements and there are four ways to respond:
1. Check the first statement if it describes you.
2. Check the second statement if it describes you.
3. Check both statements, if both are applicable to you.
4. Check neither statement if both are not applicable to you.

1
The subject was instructed to record his / her response in the blank space on the test
sheet. He / She should examine his / her response thoroughly to make sure that he /
she has made firm marks which will enable to assess hemisphere dominance
correctly.

RESULTS AND OBSERVATIONS (SCORING PROCEDURE)

Results were drawn with adopting the following scoring procedure:

In the tool, against serial numbers 1 to 50, checking of the first items indicates right
hemisphere; second item indicates left hemisphere and checking of both the items
indicates integrated hemisphere (or) whole brained.

1. Number of items checked for both the boxes for an item and wrote that
number in box “W”.
2. Number of items checked only for second item and wrote that number in box
“L”.
3. Number of items checked for first item and wrote that number in box “R”.

E.G. 1. R- SCORE = 23

3. L-SCORE= 25

4. W- SCORE= 00

Thus, the hemi sphericity dominance is determined on the basis of the highest
score in three categories of dominance. From the above scores / results, it was
observed by the subject that for him, the dominant hemisphere for Learning /
Thinking is LEFT HEMISPHERE.

INTROSPECTION:

I found the test very interesting. I felt very enthusiastic while giving test eager to
know my dominant hemisphere. Now I am sure about my hemisphere. And the
qualities that I have is dominated by left hemisphere.

CONCLUSION: EXAMPLE:

My dominant hemisphere of learning / thinking of the subject is Left Hemisphere

which reveals that the I learn best through verbal explanations and verbal
presentations. I like to learn in abstract way and like to solve the simple problem.
And I am rational and analytical.
