I. INTRODUCTION:
A student activity center or student union is the community center of the college serving
students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests. It can synthesize the hopes and aspirations for
an institution; it can serve as both a needed symbol of an ambitious future and a real
sign of progress in defining a dynamic center of campus life. The center facilitates student
recreation and socialization by providing spaces for a variety of programs, activities,
services, etc. student government and other student groups.

II. OBJECTIVES OF THE DESIGN STUDIO:

▪ To complement the academic experience of our students with extra-curricular
programs that promote social and personal development thru spaces that create
a vital, active, and useful place for student interaction and development.
▪ To make a place, and a way, for faculty, staff, and students to continue the
conversation started in the classroom – and to gather together as a community in
a variety of settings.

III. MODE OF DESIGN APPROACH:

MORPHOLOGICAL APPROACH AS A CRUX IN DESIGN METHOD:
• Design theories have always been influential in architecture because a single
theory cannot build up a monopoly over other aspects of building.
• The students to come up with a design method / approach individually based
on critical/ philosophical/ ideological positions relating to architecture and
explore architectural morphology as an important expression in design.

IV. OTHER DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS:

a. THE SAC:
• Flexible Spaces
• Form that enhances the contemporary
• Environment behavior aspects of students by understanding their psychology and
Anthropometrics - color, light, scale and proportion

b. THE SITE:
• The students are to design STUDENTS ACTIVITY CENTER in Pondicherry Site area –
2acres.
• The site of 2 acres area for the 'Student's Activity Centre' is located adjacent to
the proposed site of NIFT at Kalapet Village, Puducherry as it will be a part of the
campus. The SAC is connected to both the ECR as well as the proposed NIFT
campus and hence has access from both sides.
