CONCEPT NOTE:
* THE BASIC SQUARE PLAN AND CENTRAL OPEN SPACE HAS DERIVED FROM
TRADITIONAL LOCAL STRUCTURES (WADA) FROM NEARBY PLACES OF
AHMEDNAGAR
• THE BUILDING IS CAREFULLY PLACED ON ROCKY PORTION OF SITE INSTEAD
OF DAMAGING FERRILE SOIL ON THE SITE
• IN THE AGRICULTURAL CENTER THE PLANNING IS DONE BY CONSIDERING
SUN MOVEMENT SERVICES LIKE TOILETS, PANTRY AND ENTRANCE LOBBY IS
PLACED AT SOUTH CORNER WHICH CAN ACT AS A BUFFER ZONE
• CAVITY WALL IS MADE FOR REMAINING SIDES TO MINIMISE THE HEAT GAIN.
• BOTH THE CLASSROOMS ARE ORIENTED TOWARDS NORTH SIDE TO
MINIMIZE THE HEAT GAIN AND MAXIMIZE THE NATURAL NORTH LIGHT
THROUGH OUT THEE DAY.
• THE DRAMATIC INTERNAL VOLUME IS MODULATED WITH NATURAL MATERIALS USED- EXTERIOR PHOTOS-
ILLUMINATION, WHITE WALLS UT WITH NATURAL LIGHT, GRAY KOTAH STONE
FOR FLOORING AND OVER DETAILED INTERIORS ARE AVOIDED TO BRING
SIMPLE DIGNITY OF SILENT ARCHITECTURE.
• THE MAIN CHALLENGE WAS TO DESIGN A BUILDING FOR THOSE LOCAL
PEOPLE WHO CAN GET TO KNOW THE CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE BY
USING THE MATERIALS WHICH ARE FAMILIAR TO THEM SO IN THAT CONTEXT
WE HAVE USED EXPOSED GRAY AND COCOURED FLY ASH BRICK WALLS
OUTSIDE AND WHITE WASHED INTERIOR SPACES LIT WITH NATURAL LIGHT.

This simplistic, square building is an agriculture training centre
in the rural area of Nimblak, Maharashtra, India. Built for the
marginal farmers’ children, its purpose is to enable rural youth,
the next generation of farmers, to learn various new
agricultural techniques through short duration courses. The
building, designed by the Indian architectural firm Studio
Advaita is the brainchild of the NGOs the Syngenta foundation
and the Snehalaya Organisation. The training centre is a place
ADMINISTRATION for getting information about soil, climate and crops for the
nearby villagers. The centre arranges exhibitions of students’
CLASSROOM research which can be accessed and viewed by the local
LABORATORY
AND EXHIBITION farmers
SPACE The internal rooms of this building are striking, most notably for
their stark cuboid shape and the walls which are stained a
deep, ochre red. A daring hand has spliced through the roof
space to cut out a corner of the room allowing daylight to
penetrate the space. It’s a clever idea, having indirect light to
reduce the consumption of electricity. The vista of blue skies
and clouds that the cut-out affords, viewed as they are against
STAIRCASE TOILET the blank, red canvas of the internal walls, reads like a surreal
painting.

The tall walls have minimum openings, shaped like slits, to

receive a concentration of light and spray it into the rooms. In
CENTRAL SPACE CLASSROOM addition, the perimeter of the super structure is offset to
AND EXHIBITION create slits in the roof too, that further sprays more light in.
SPACE The central court like space is taller and the volume is
TOILET negated by a portion at one corner to have a large multi
squared opening that focuses light inside.

ENTRANCE Further, the interiors finished with faint colors and medium
PANTRY rough textures make the vast spaces feel subtle to the senses.

"The project is a training resource center for the marginal

farmers", says Ar. Rasika of Studio Advaita on the project’s
program. "The center provides short courses in agricultural
techniques and holds studies on soil, climate and farming.
The center also conducts agricultural exhibitions here, and is
initiated by Syngenta Foundation and Snehalaya
Organisation."

What is most notable about this building is the simplicity in

its design statement. It uses colour, geometric shapes and
thoughtful application of materials to make it more than just
a box to fill up with people. But more than that, it addresses
affordability and financial sustainability. And it does all of the
above so well that it completes its task admirably in providing
what good architecture should always hope to achieve, a
working aesthetic space for the community it represents.
