Available data give a negative answer
to these questions, pointing to
increasing apathy and social
passivity. The reasons are numerous,
i.e. the change in the world of
meanings and in the definition of
past, present and future;
declassation of certain social groups;
factors linked to the specific
character of Polish transformation
and socio-psychological
consequences of the process of
change. These and other factors
cause social anomy, a side-effect of
transition and its social changes.
The state of anomie that Russian
society has been in for several
decades now has significantly
transformed the ethical orientations
people. The ethic of conviction and
the ethic of service have lost virtually
all their relevance in the absence of a
unified, universal system of values
and clear, universally recognized
goals for reforming the Russian
institutional system. The younger
generation of Russians is embracing
the ethic of responsibility only insofar
as it affects their personal well-being
and success. A readiness to take
responsibility for Russia’s future is
seen much less frequently, and this is
a real cause for concern.
