TRUSTWORTHINESS

I. Objective

After the lesson, students will:

1. Learn to be honest, reliable and sincere

2. Have the courage to do the right thing
3. Build a good reputation
4. Earn the confidence of others

II. Procedure

1. Opening prayer

2. Lesson of the day – Trustworthiness

What is Trustworthiness? Trustworthiness is when people say that you are “worthy” to
be “trusted”. It is a value or a character that you earn from people around you.

3. Discussion – what does the following phrase mean:

HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU LIE BEFORE YOU ARE A LIAR?

Michael Josephson, American ethicist

3. GROUP ACTIVITY

Case Study 1

Ask each group to pick out prepared cards with the following notes and discuss as a
group. Present to the class afterwards.

1. Your teacher has miscalculated your test score, giving you a higher grade than you
deserve. What would you do?

2. You’ve said before that picking on other students is wrong. You’re with some friends
who are laughing and joking about a handicapped student. What would you do?

3. You are grading your own paper in class. There are opportunities to change minor,
careless mistakes. Do you go ahead and change it?

4. Your friend decided to tell you about his/her family problems. He/she told you that
this is confidential but your teacher noticed your friend looking problematic and asked
you about it. What would you do?

4. You hate the novel you’re supposed to be reading for an English class. You
discovered on the internet simplified outline of the novel. What would you do?
PRINCIPLES:

1. You are defined by what you do, not by what you say or believe in
2. Every choice you make defines the kind of person you want to be
3. Good character requires doing the right thing even when it’s costly or risky
4. Develop excellent standards
5. What you do matters, remember one person can make a difference
6. The payoff for having good character is that it makes you a better person and it makes
the world a better place.

Here Is A Short Story With A Beautiful Message

Little Girl And Her Father Were Crossing A Bridge.

The Father Was Kind Of Scared So He Asked His Little Daughter,
'Sweetheart, Please Hold My Hand So That You Don't Fall Into The River.'
The Little Girl Said, 'No, Dad. You Hold My Hand.'
'What's The Difference?' Asked The Puzzled Father.

'There's A Big Difference,' Replied The Little Girl.

'If I Hold Your Hand And Something Happens To Me,

Chances Are That I May Let Your Hand Go.
But If You Hold My Hand, I Know For Sure That No Matter What Happens,
You Will Never Let My Hand Go.

III. Evaluation -

 Being a person of your word, one who keeps his promise.

 He/she is reliable – follows through on his/her commitments.
 Is honest.
 Can keep a secret. Does not betray trust.
 Has integrity – will not cave in to temptation.
 Has loyalty.

IV. Closing Prayer – pray that the students will not only understand the true meaning of
trustworthiness but live and breathe according to its meaning.

Trustworthiness is something we have to earn. If you do what you think is right,

integrity will show.
