His book entitled Demian: The Childhood of Emil Sinclair is the book I have been

impacted the most. I love reading books, and I have read over 100 novels to satisfy my thirst for
interesting stories—and this one is really what caught the apple of my eye.
According to Goodreads, Hesse is a German-Swiss poet, novelist, and painter. He is a
Nobel Prize for Literature awardee. His famous works are Siddhartha, Steppenwolf, and
Magister Ludi—his work centralizes in finding oneself.[ CITATION Goond \l 1033 ]
I had first read this when I was in ninth grade. It was fascinating how a prologue and
eight chapters could get me this even hooked year later! I remember I was only reading it to
understand theories from a music video I watched. The line, “the bird fights its way out of the
egg. The egg is the world. Who would be born first must destroy the world,” that phrase piqued
my interest, that I quickly looked up for the novel. It was metaphorically excellent! It was so
abstract and like how his book could be interpreted differently by the different perspectives of
the readers. I love how this novel made me question the life I am leading today. And I love how
his works still resonate and have an impact on my day-to-day life.
The main character, Emil Sinclair, is a young boy who undergoes character development
throughout the different phases of his life. He met various people who helped him in his
childhood, teenage years, and adulthood, but Max Demian was the prominent man who stayed
with him until adulthood. Although Sinclair and Demian lost contact in his college life, they still
reunited together. I will tell you a spoiler; readers speculated that the characters in Emil Sinclair
are his consciousness, and they are just all in his head! I was mind-blown, too, when I read this
somewhere from a fan who explained the theories to me.
What’s more shocking is that it makes sense how Demian was not mentioned other than
Sinclair—thus, proving more of him being a fictional character in Sinclair’s world. My favorite
character in this book is Sinclair! He is a young boy who helped me question my own life and
the thoughts I have in my head!
Hesse’s works are philosophical, so it is only natural to challenge one’s psychological
understanding of his works. This is the factor that I was seeking for books and essays that I read.
The amazingness still retains its value in my memory!
