The Birth of the Christian Community
We begin our understanding of the life of the first Christian community with how this
group of people was formed. The Acts of the Apostle in Chapter 2 summarizes the daily life of
the earliest Christian community in Jerusalem.
Before His passion and death, Jesus promised the apostles that He will send the Holy

Spirit to them. Life was never the same for the apostles after Jesus’ death and resurrection. The
feelings of security and zeal for mission were replaced with fear as they were threatened by the
Romans and the Sanhedrin not until when the Holy Spirit came down upon the apostles for
them to be His witnesses from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. (cf. Acts 1:8) The Spirit is
sent to us by God to be with us and to continue His work within us. As Jesus was empowered by
the Spirit, He sens forth the same Spirit to His disciples.

Jesus Christ fulfilled His promise to the apostles—He sent the Holy Spirit to them. The
Holy Spirit empowered the apostles to continue Christ’s mission. Through the Holy Spirit, the
Church is inaugurated.

The apostles received the Spirit during the Feast of the Weeks known as Pentecost, a
festival of the Jewish religious calendar celebrated seven weeks or fifty days after the Pasch or

part of this
Passover. Thus, the Pentecost event marks the birth of the apostolic Church, first Christian
community, and it was the Holy Spirit, sent by the Father and the Risen Christ, that became the
principal agent of evangelization, a sign and instrument of salvation bringing the work of Christ
to completion. Until today, the Holy Spirit continues to exercise three functions: to give life, to
unify and to move or animate the whole body, the Church.

Let’s go deeper…
The Characteristics of the First Christian Community
Let us now reflectively read the biblical passage from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 4:32-
37) which shows how the early Christians provide the Church at present a fitting model that it

can emulate and how the Holy Spirit infuses unity into the Church.

Read “This is What Our Faith Teaches” on page 61 and ”The Teachings of the Church"
on page 62 in your CLE book.

At the end of Chapter 2 of the Acts of the Apostles, the life of the early Christians is

reproduced
described in this words:
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking
of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs
performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They
sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to
meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad
and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to
their number daily those who were being saved.” - Acts 2:42-44

As Pentecost came, the apostles were filled with courage to proclaim the truth about
Christ (See Acts 2:1-12). Those who heard Peter were converted and added to the Christian
community. Guided by the apostles, the early Christians lived a life of fellowship with one
another (Greek: koinonia) and devoted themselves to the teachings of the apostles or didache.
This communion echoes the very desire of Christ.
In Chapter 4 of the Acts, the same description is given to the community of early
Christians though worded differently, “The community of believers was one of one heart and
mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in
common.”

The unity of the early Christians is truly admirable. It speaks of the unity that should
characterize the Church. It is a unity that recognizes the equality in dignity and value of each
member. Thus, they had all things in common and not one among them was in need; a unity
that moves each member to active participation in the life of the community as evidenced by

his or her adherence to the teachings of the apostles, to their community celebration of the
breaking of the bread which is the equivalent of the Eucharist.

The Growth and Mission of the first Christian Disciples in Jerusalem

The most difficult years of the first Christians started after the death of the first martyr,
Stephen. Despite the hardships and physical torture they were subjected to, the Christians
remained steadfast in their faith in God. They supported one another through prayer and
concrete gestures of care and fraternal charity.

ACTIVITY 2: What will I do?

What is even more amazing about the early Christians is that their unity attracted many
to become followers of Jesus. The last statement in Acts 2 states, "And every day the Lord
added to their number those who were being saved." This is what the PCP II means when it
states that the communion in the Church is for mission. The texts from the Acts of the Apostles
speak of the benefits that occur to the Christians by virtue of their being united (no one was
needy among them), yet it also states that the benefits of communion of the early Christians

moved beyond the community-it attracted other people to the community. Thus, we see how
this unity helped in the growth and spread of the Church.

Let’s wrap up…
When Jesus was about to leave His apostles, He told them not to be sad and afraid
because He will not leave them orphaned. He promised to send the Advocate, the Holy Spirit
who will teach the apostles everything and will remind them of what He told them. And when
Jesus went back to the Father they remained steadfast in their faith until the promised Spirit
came during Pentecost and they gained strength to fulfill the mission entrusted to them. The

Holy Spirit provided them with the impetus to spread the good news of salvation which shows
clearly how the Spirit vivifies and gives life to the Church.
From the very day of Pentecost, the proclamation and communication of the mystery of
Christ was done by the power of the Holy Spirit. This signaled the beginning of the Church’s
mission to the whole world which echoes the very words of Christ to His apostles in John 20:21-
23, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them
and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and
whose sins you retain are retained.” The first great living work of the Holy Spirit, therefore, is
the Church.
As members of the Church, god also pours His Spirit upon us. As such, the Holy Spirit
also empowers us to proclaim the good news of salvation, to help build the Church and to
spread the faith. The Holy Spirit calls us to sow seeds of unity and to live a life that bears
witness to Jesus’ message of love.
