According to Catechism for Filipino Catholics (CFC 428), we often confuse “prophet”
with a fortune teller (manghuhula) who predicts what the future holds in store for us. But the
Old Testament prophets were not like that. They were men called by God to speak His word to
the people, interpreting their present situation in the sight of God and telling them what He
would do with them. Most of all, the prophets called the people back to the Covenant. For
despite God’s constant fidelity, Israel’s history is a series of infidelities. After the first stage of
God’s saving acts in liberating His people from their slavery in Egypt, a second stage concerns
their deliverance proclaimed by the prophets, both before and after the Exile, if only they
would turn back to the Lord.

In the Scriptures, the prophets were called by God to bring His message to the people. The term
prophet is derived from the Greek word “prophetes” which means one who speaks before others." The
prophet is a proclaimer and interpreter of divine revelation In the Old Testament, the prophets were
called to convey God's message to the people. They reminded the people to be faithful to their covenant
with God by living justly in right relationship with one another and with God. The prophets called the
people to conversion. They warned the people of the consequences of disobedience to God's commands
and unfaithfulness to the covenant The prophet Isaiah assured the people of the unceasing love and
protection of God. He wanted the people to believe and depend on God. He made a strong conviction
that God will never leave His people and that He is the God of Salvation.
The prophets were moved by the inspiration brought about by their love for God and for His
people. They were so determined to spread God's message even if they were confronted with so many
difficulties and challenges. Many of them experienced difficulties such as hunger, isolation, rejection,
and even death. In spite of all these challenging situations, they were devoted to the mission that was
given to them by God-to communicate God's message of hope and salvation.
Virtues are gifts from God that lead us to live in a close relationship with him. Virtues are like
habits. They need to be practiced; they can be lost if they are neglected. The three most important
virtues are called theological virtues because they come from God and lead to God. The cardinal virtues
are human virtues, acquired by education and good actions. Cardinal comes from cardo, the Latin word
for hinge, meaning “that on which other things depend.”

WRAP-UP
Catechism for Filipino Catholics (CFC 429-431) emphasized the following points on the
prophets call to conversion:
Conversion. This prophetic “word” comes as a surprise; it is a word of passion, bringing
new hope at the very time when things were completely hopeless. It is the “word of the Lord,”
free and unaccommodating, breaking all conventional expectations. It is a word of conversion:
turn back to God. Amos admonishes: “Seek the Lord, that you may live . . . Seek good and not
evil; Then truly will the Lord, the God of hosts, be with you as you claim!” (Am 5:6, 14) Isaiah
echoes the same call to conversion: “Wash yourselves clean! Put away your misdeeds from
before my eyes; Cease doing evil; learn to do good. Make justice your aim: redress the wronged,
Hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow” (Is 1:16-17).
All of us are called by God to be His prophets. Our Lord Jesus Christ has accomplished His task of
salvation for us. Conversely, we need to be saved from so much evil present in our world materialism,
greed, excessive desire for wealth and power, and abuse of God's creation. Through faith, we can tell
others that in God alone can we find salvation. Through our words and our actions, we can
communicate the love of our loving Father who never ceases to be at our side.
