Manipulatives  Presentation  
 
 
15%  weighting   Due:  January  26    
 
In  groups  of  3,  students  will  research  and  develop  a  10  minute  video  on  a  mathematics  manipulative  
including  a  handout  for  classmates  and  one  or  two  discussion  questions  for  a  Moodle  Discussion  
Forum.  The  presentation  and  handout  will  include  the  uses  of  the  manipulative,  suggested  activities,  
and  the  curricular  outcomes/grade  levels  that  the  manipulative  can  be  used  for.  Groups  and  which  
manipulative  they  are  working  on  will  be  randomly  assigned.  
 
Submission  expectations:  By  Midnight  on  January  26th,  one  member  of  your  group  e-­‐mails  Richelle  
(richelle.marynowski@uleth.ca)  the  following:  
-­‐   A  link  to  or  the  actual  video  file    
-­‐   The  handout  for  your  classmates  
-­‐   The  discussion  questions  
These  will  all  be  posted  on  Moodle  by  Richelle  for  class  on  Thursday,  January  28th.    
 
Class  on  January  28th:  you  are  expected  to  watch  at  least  3  of  the  videos  and  respond  to  the  group’s  
discussion  questions  in  Moodle.  Please  do  this  by  4pm  on  Thursday,  January  28th.  
 
Marking  Criteria:    
 
Your  presentation  and  handout  will  be  marked  holistically  according  to  the  following  criteria  and  will  be  
assigned  a  letter  grade  corresponding  to  how  well  your  presentation,  handout,  and  discussion  questions  
complete  the  following:  
 
(a)  Clear  description  of  the  manipulative  and  its  potential  uses  
(b)  Description  of  or  links  to  suggested  activities  that  explicitly  correspond  to  the  outcomes  of  the  
Alberta  Program  of  Studies  as  indicated  
(c)  Comprehensive  listing  of  outcomes  within  the  Alberta  Mathematics  Programs  of  Study  that  the  
manipulatives  could  be  used  for  
(d)  Thoughtful  discussion  questions  related  to  the  use  of  the  manipulatives  and  mathematics  teaching  
and  learning
