Activity 1
For some but not all of the following verb lexemes, the preterite and past participle
forms have distinct shapes. Say for each whether the shapes are the same or different,
and make up examples to show that you are right.
1. Burn: SAME
a. The wood was totally burned/burnt.
b. The man burned/burnt the paper.
2. Buy: SAME
a. I bought a beautiful dress last week.
b. She has bought an oven for her kitchen.
3. Draw: DIFFERENT
a. I drew a big picture yesterday.
b. You have your house drawn.
4. Drink: DIFFERENT
a. She drank too much beer at the party.
b. I only have drunk a coke.
5. Fall: DIFFERENT
a. He fell down.
b. I have fallen in love with a good looking boy.
6. Forget: DIFFERENT
a. I forgot your telephone number and I couldn’t phone you yesterday.
b. She has forgotten your name.
7. Hold: SAME
8. Ride: DIFFERENT
a. I rode a horse last month
b. She has ridden a horse once in her life.

of the auxiliary lexemes have, need and dare or instances of the corresponding
lexical verbs.

What is the meaning of be in the following examples: lexical verb, progressive auxiliary,
passive auxiliary or lexical auxiliary.
