I.

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, 75% of the students are expected to:
a. Differentiate direct speech from reported speech; and
b. Write direct speech out from a given reported speech and vice versa.

III. PROCEDURE

Pre-Activity

1. Review
Review about the previous lesson.
2. Motivation
Interview the whole class.
Ask the question: What is your favourite movie?

The answer of one student will be repeated of the next student before he/she answers the question.
Example scenario:

Question: What is your favourite movie?


Student 1: Aquaman.
Student 2: Aquaman. Infinity War.
Student 3: Aquaman. Infinity War. Godzilla.

And so on, until it ends to a student who could not memorize all the statements.

A. ACTIVITY
Choose 10 volunteers from the class. Divide them into two. The rest of the class will observe while the two
groups will play a game in front of the class.
They will play the game called: PASS THE MESSAGE. The teacher will whisper a sentence to the first person in
each group. The members will pass the message until it reach the last person. The last person will write the
message on a given cartolina.
Message:

“I am Miss Jamaica, and I like to watch movies.”

B. ANALYSIS
Ask the students what their classmates just did.
Did they use the exact words that their teacher said to the first student?

Show them these pairs of sentences and ask them what the differences of the two sentences are:

“She is very pretty”, Mark says. Mark said that she was very pretty.
Mr. Perez said, “I want to meet your parents.” Mr. Perez said that he wanted to meet my parents.
He said, “I wrote the letter.” He said that he wrote the letter.
“I like your book”, she said. She said that she liked my book.
Riza said, “Bring my bag, Ana.” Riza told Ana to bring her bag.
“Get inside!” shouted Ms. Sandy to her students Ms. Sandy told her students to get inside.

What have you noticed with the form of the sentences?


Which of the group of sentences shows the exact words of what have been spoken?
What can you say about the other group of sentences?
What are the differences?
Lead the students to identify the differences:
- Quotation marks
- Tenses of the verb
- “that”
- Change in pronoun
- Use of “told” + “to + base form”

C. ABSTRACTION

What is a direct speech?

*Direct speech repeats, or quotes, the exact words spoken.

What is a reported speech?

*Reported or indirect speech is usually used to talk about the past, so we normally change the tense of the verbs.

What are the differences between the reported speech and the direct speech?

D. APPLICATION

The whole class will be divided into two groups. Each group will identify the sentence in each cartolina
strip if it is direct or reported speech.

- Annie told Paul to pass his project.


- “I will go to home late”, said Karen.
- Nila shouted for help.
- Amy told Kent to go outside.
- “That is my house”, said the student.

Rewrite the sentences into its direct or reported speech.

- “I can go out”, said Paul.


- The girl told her teacher to leave her alone.
- “The dogs don’t bite”, said Jon.

IV. EVALUATION

Write the Reported Speech of the following sentences.


1. “The horses are pretty”, said Mother.
2. “I want to ride the horses, Mommy”, said Patty.
3. “You have to be careful, Patty”, said Dad.
4. The children shouted, “Help!!!”
5. “Close the car doors, Jon”, said Uncle Kit.

Write the Direct Speech of the following sentences.


6. Jim told Kit to buy some food.
7. Liz said that she wanted to go home.
8. The villagers shouted fire.
9. Patrick said the view is breathtaking.
10. The teacher told her students to sit down.
V. ASSIGNMENT
Write 5 sentences in direct speech and write its reported speech.

III. DEVELOPMENTAL ACTIVITY
1. Procedure
A. ACTIVITY
The teacher will ask the group leaders to instruct their members to do the following assignments before they proceed to
their formal lesson:
“ Group 1 will sweep the floor inside the classroom.”
“ Group 2 will clean the corridor.”
“ Group 3 will arrange the books in the shelf.”
“ Group 4 will wipe the tables and shelves.”
“ Group 5 will clean the board.”

 The leaders will write the sentence on the board about how they instructed their
members.
 The students will analyze the sentence.

B. ANALYSIS
 Discussion of the lesson.
When transforming statements, check whether you have to change:
 pronouns
 present tense verbs (3rd person singular)
 place and time expressions
 tenses (backshift)

Type Example
direct speech “I speak English.”
reported speech He says that he speaks English.
(no backshift) He says that he spoke English.

When transforming questions, check whether you have to change: 


 pronouns 
 present tense verbs (3rd person singular) 
 place and time expressions 
 tenses (backshift)
Also note that you have to:
 transform the question into an indirect question
 use the interrogative or if / whether

  cut a news article from a newspaper and paste it on a long bond paper
  on the same paper, list down at least five reported speech that you found in the news article
  change the reported speech to direct speech
