are going to think of words that simply describes
the pictures. Create a simple sentence for the
first picture and another simple sentence for the
second picture based from the words you have
given. After composing two different sentences I
want you to connect those sentences by filling in
the blank to make it one sentence.
Yes Sir!
Did you get it?

Now let’s start with the first picture.

Based from your observation from the first  Studying

picture, what are the words that first come into  Girl
your minds?  Exam
 Writing
 Reviewing
That’s correct!
Now based from the words you have given,
kindly compose a simple sentence. The girl is studying and reviewing her
lesson.
That’s good!

The girl maybe reviewing her lesson or notes or

maybe she is studying harder.

The next picture.

Now based from the words you have given,

kindly compose a simple sentence. The girl passed the exam.

Very good class! The girl passed the exam!

Now, it’s your turn to create a sentence based

on your observation on the pictures.

Now let us connect the two sentences two make

it one and coherent.

Kindly connect the two sentences.

The girl is reviewing her lesson in order to
pass the exam.

That’s great!
You connected the two sentences and make it
one.

What helped you in connecting the two

sentences?
Sir we use “in order to” to connect the two
ideas.
That’s right!
Now, what do we call these?

Great? idea to another.

Based from our short activity, what do you think

B. Development of the Lesson

Teacher Learners

Before we begin our discussion, let us define

what is Grammatical signals or expressions.

Grammatical Signals

 Writing devices that serve to maintain text

coherent.
 They signal the relationship between new
sentences and the one before it.

Coherence – The connection or consistency of

the sentences or the state in which all the parts
or ideas fit together well so that they form a
united whole.

What is Idea Development?

In order for you to understand it better.
Whenever you ask to write a sentence, how do
you explain or present your ideas?

 Is the manner or pattern by which a writer

or speaker explains his/her main idea
about a topic in a paragraph.
 Patterns of organization show the
relationships between supporting details
in paragraphs, essays, and chapter.

There are four most common pattern of idea

development:
 General to Particular
 Claim and counterclaim
 Problem – Solution
 Cause – Effect

In using grammatical signals or expressions, we

also use Cohesive devices in order to make the
sentence balance.

Example:
I have to call mom even though it is late at
I have to call mom + It is late at night night

Kindly connect the two ideas. You can use I have to call mom because it is late at night
cohesive devices or parallel structure in
connecting it.

Very good!

The first sentence, you can observe that the boy

called his mom even though it is late because
maybe the child is hungry.

While on the second sentence, the boy called

his mom because maybe his mom supposed to
pick him up at 8pm but it’s already pass 10.

What I am trying to say here is that, the meaning

of the sentence changes depending on the
function of grammatical signals that are used.

The focus of our lesson for today is on the

grammatical signals expressing:

 General to Particular

Let us start with General to Particular or General

to specific.
General to specific – is a method of developing
a paragraph by moving from a broad
observation about a topic to specific details in
support of that topic. It begins with the general
idea or statement and is followed by specific
details to support and explain it.

General – the statement that contains the main

idea.
Specific – the statement that contains the sub-
topics of the main statement.

Example 1: Drinking coffee has many health Sir the general idea of the paragraph is
benefits. To be specific, drinking coffee can Drinking coffee has many health benefits.
improve energy levels, help you burn fat, and
lower your risk of type 2 diabetes.

Now, what do you think is the general idea of the

paragraph? Sir the specific idea of the paragraph is to
be specific, drinking coffee can improve
That’s right! The general Idea of the paragraph energy levels, help you burn fat, and lower
is drinking coffee has many health benefits. your risk of type 2 diabetes.

Now, kindly identify the specific idea of the

paragraph.

Very good class!

As you notice on the general idea, there is no

need to identify or elaborate the information, Sir the grammatical signal that is being used
while on the specific details, the information are on the paragraph is “to be specific”
being elaborated and being discussed one by
one.

Now, what is the grammatical signal that is

being used on the paragraph?

Very good!

“ to be specific is the grammatical signal that is

being used to introduce the specific idea of the
paragraph”
Example 2:

There are beautiful places in Zambales. These

beautiful places such as the New Zealand in Sir the general idea of the paragraph is that,
San Marcelino, Bagsit River in Palauig, and Mt. there are beautiful places in Zambales.
Pinatubo in Botolan are the tourist destination
you might choose to go to.

Again what is the general idea of the paragraph? Sir the specific idea is “These beautiful
places such as the New Zealand in San
Marcelino, Bagsit River in Palauig, and Mt.
Very good! Pinatubo in Botolan are the tourist
destination you might choose to go to.”
Now what is the specific idea of the paragraph?

Sir the grammatical signal that is used in the

paragraph is “such as”

That’s right.
Now identify the grammatical signal that is used
on the paragraph.

Example 3:
In applying the position for secretary, applicants
must pass all the requirements. Furthermore,
they need to pass their Resume, Police
clearance, barangay clearance, and barangay Sir the general statement of the paragraph
residency. is “In applying the position for secretary,
applicants must pass all the requirements.”
Now, kindly identify the general statement of the
paragraph.
The specific statement of the paragraph is
“Furthermore, they need to pass their
That’s right! Resume, Police clearance, barangay
clearance, and barangay residency.”
How about the specific statement?
The grammatical signal that is being used
on the paragraph is “Furthermore”
That’s is correct!

Now what is the grammatical signal that is used

on the paragraph?
Yes Sir!
Great!

Did you now get it, how general ideas differ from
specific statement?

These are the common signals words that you

can use in idea development expressing general
to specific.
 For example
 Furthermore
 Such as
 In other words
 Namely
 Like

Always remember that the importance of

grammatical signals is to indicate to the readers
the relationships between sentences and
between paragraphs, making it easier to the
readers to understand your ideas.

Now I know you are ready in composing a None Sir!

paragraph using signal words!

Do you have any questions class? Or any

clarifications?

If none, let us recall again what you have

learned by sharing what are your take overs in
our lesson.
