Brief Description:

In the midst of pandemic, life changes its course and shifted to the new normal.
The question is, despite the challenges brought by the pandemic, can we still achieve
the goals of “National Service Training Program (NSTP)? Can we still carry out the
seven dimensions of NSTP?

Training Service (LTS), still make a way to provide service to other people. License to
Thrive: Your Scientific Movie House is one of the projects being implemented which
aims to offer scientific entertainment through online platforms such as Facebook and
messenger. We can still relate it to one of the dimensions of NSTP which is recreation.
In this time of pandemic wherein we cannot easily leave our house, watching movies
and playing mobile games became our form of recreational activities. We consider
these as passive recreational activities. Hence, it is a pleasure to still serve our fellow
youth with such recreational activity which they will not just be entertained but will also
learn scientific principles. This project will improve student’s interest in science as a
subject through incorporating science fiction movies and interactive online activities.

As an individual
Narratives of my Insights

Doing a home-based field immersion is a challenging task that gives me new

experiences as a student and pre-service teacher. It may be disappointing not to
experience what the other students did before in Literacy Service Training (LTS), but I
believe that every situation has something to give such as learnings and realizations. I
am honored to be one of the pioneers of this home-based field immersion and I want to
grab this opportunity to share my insights about the said activity. I will include my
realizations on the preparation, implementation, and post field immersion. At the end of
this narrative, I will put a generalization wherein I will share how this home-based
immersion engagement help me visualize myself as a teacher and how it prepares me
to be a future teacher.

Preparation:

In the preparation of the umbrella project and sub-projects, these are the things I
realize:

1. Do not hesitate to share your ideas

It is my weakness when having a discussion virtually. I am not comfortable to

type my ideas and press the send button considering that we never met each other
personally and we did not have enough knowledge about other’s preferences.
Therefore, at first, I was not sending my ideas via group chat. I just ignored the chats of
our president, Ivan Palencia. No one was replying to his chat. I think everyone was
hesitant to share their ideas on the group chat. Until there came a time when I realized
the need to just freely share my ideas for the class’ sake and to at least contribute for
the effectiveness of the projects. I started to send direct messages to Ivan because, yes
I was still shy to send it via group chat.
Then, we had our first ever meeting through video call. That time I had the
courage to speak my ideas and it turned out well. Indeed, when we started to share our
insights, everyone shall follow. Everyone will also have the courage to speak what is in
their mind. After that, I had also the courage to share my ideas on our group chat. I also
commend how Ivan accepted and look into consideration the ideas we shared.
Therefore, I can say that “If you don’t want to regret it later, share it now.”

2. Do not hesitate to ask

When we do not understand something, do not be afraid to ask. There is this

quote that says, "He who asks a question remains a fool for five minutes. He who does
not ask remains a fool forever." If we do not ask questions, we are not going to find out
what the answer is. It was my fault that I did not ask questions before the
implementation of our project. In result, I could not participate actively during the
implementation because I did not fully understand the process of how we will do the
project. Then, I humbly asked our leader, Shane Cheska Jane, to explain it again to me.
It may be too late but I, indeed, realized the essence of asking questions. Asking
questions will depict our willingness to help. Therefore, I can suggest that “don't be
afraid of asking questions, because people will appreciate your curiosity.”

3. Be Active in the Discussion

Becoming active during the discussion is hard for us because we did not yet
have that strong and open relationship with each other. However now, I want to tell you
that do be inactive during virtual meetings. I know that everyone is struggling to cope up
in this new mode of learning. Everyone is finding it hard to interact virtually. Hence, as a
pre-service teacher, let us make it as a training ground to enhance our social skills. I
realized that maybe someday, this is how I will interact with my students. It may be hard
for me to be active virtually unlike when having it face-to-face, but I really tried to
surpass my weakness. Now, I can say that I am thankful for this experience.

During a discussion, we can be active by saying yes or no as a sign of agreeing

or disagreeing. We can laugh, share our ideas and so on. Do not also forget to
encourage one another and appreciate their presence in the virtual meeting. This new
mode of communication may frustrate us personally, but I want to tell you that, this it
has something to teach us as a 21st century learners.

4. Learn to Volunteer

I hate myself for staying silent in the delegation of tasks or whenever our class
needs help in relation with our home-based immersion. I waited for them to assign me
and mention my name to do this and that. However, it did not happen. In this situation,
wherein we do not yet know each other well, volunteerism is important. No one will
assign you on a certain task since your skills, talents, or strengths are not yet known to
the class. Therefore, I realized that if we think we have the capability to do this, learn to
volunteer. In result, I started to volunteer myself and it was amazing to see that the
other also start to volunteer themselves. I want to say that learning to volunteer is not
something that shows boasting, it is caring.

7. Have minutes during the meeting

In a home-based work immersion, it is important to relay the decisions and

important matters to the whole members of the class especially in the preparation. I
think it was commendable to assign one or two persons to act as the secretary during
the meeting. They will do the minutes and send it to the group chat for everyone’s
awareness.
We did not have this in our class that’s why sometimes we don’t know any more what’s
happening with our project preparation. Always remember to update the progress of
ideas in the group chat.

Implementation:

In the implementation of our group’s project, these are the things I realize and want to
share:

1. Stay connected with the group

We lack in this thing. We did not meet regularly because of other school works.
In result, we did not have much discussion about the progress of our project. We did not
discuss in our group the things we need to improve and the problems we encountered.
In result, there were times that our project was not any more effective, and we did not
see any progress. Therefore, I realize that in doing home-based immersion, regular
meetings with the group members are essential and necessary to monitor the progress
of the project and for further improvements.

2. Have a clear delegation of tasks

Honestly, we did not have a proper delegation of tasks in our group. In result, the
members have no sense of responsibility and the leader mostly prepare all the
activities. Sometimes because of unexpected circumstances, we could not anymore
follow the tasks assigned to us. What happened in our group was more on volunteerism
or initiatives. Yes, it was good to volunteer but I still suggest having a proper delegation
of tasks. This will challenge the members to do their best in their assigned task. This will
also create a smooth flow of the project.

3. Stick on the schedule of activities and inform the participants

If we really fail in the preparation, the implementation will also fail. We had a
struggle in implementing our activities because in the first place, we did not have a
proper schedule of activities. What to post in the FB Group, when to post it and so on. It
is also important for the participants to be aware of the different activities and its
schedule in a week. The problem in our group was that we just post the materials and
activities in our preferred time, hence, the participants did not know when to visit the
group. Because of this, the engagement of the participants was not that observable.

4. Engage with the participants

We also lack in this thing. At first, honestly, I just clicked the reaction button
instead of replying to the comments of the participants. I did not grab the opportunity to
prolong the discussion and connect with them. I did not even show appreciation
knowing that they rendered a time to visit our group and engage with our activities. They
were the center of our activity, but I didn’t make efforts to engage them. The moment I
realized this, I started replying to the comments of the participants and I enjoyed it so
much. It was nice to have this opportunity to connect with other people and share my
ideas. In the implementation of the project, it is really necessary to engage with the
participants to boost their enthusiasm in participating.

5. Be Creative

Since we are implementing our project in an online platform, it was challenging to

make our contents creative. It was the reason why I did not volunteer much in posting
the content in our FB group. I was not creative in putting my thoughts into words. I did
not know how to make my captions attractive and intriguing. Yet, I still tried and asked
my groupmate, Joyce Colle, to check and revise my caption. It turned out well and I was
thankful to be able to face the challenge successfully. I may not be that creative in
words, but I had the opportunity to use my skills in graphics designs in our content. We
decided to create infographics to make our content more creative and interesting.
Therefore, I volunteered happily to make the infographics. Indeed, I can say that in the
online platform, it is important to be creative in any ways.

6. Show consistency, if not, provide explanation for the delays

To maintain the participation of the students, it is important to show consistency.

We failed to do this in our group. Sometimes, the delay of postings took 2-3 days
because of some reasons. However, we didn’t even apologize and share our reasons.
During the holy week, we also failed to inform them that the activities will also rest for a
week. Because of these circumstances, we could not fully expect the students’
participation and it also loses their enthusiasm with our project. Therefore, I learned the
importance of showing consistent efforts to the participants in order to boost their
participation.

7. Be Flexible

We don’t know what comes along the way, so becoming flexible is essential.
During the implementation of our project, we can sense that some of our activities are
not effective and we face a lot of problems in terms of the engagement of the
participants. Therefore, we made necessary changes and thought of a remedial action.
For example, we find it hard to have an interactive discussion with the participants via
FB group, hence, we created a group chat via messenger. Then, it was effective. The
participants freely shared their ideas, and we had a wonderful discussion.
Post-Field Immersion Realizations

1. I should put my heart in everything I do. Providing entertainment may be as simple as

that, but without knowing it, I can help someone in coping up with stress or any
difficulties in their lives. By simply connecting with them and the feeling that they have a
big sister to share ideas with, is already an immense help to them.

2. Always find the opportunities in every situation. This pandemic may frustrate me as a
student and steal my excitement to experience the field immersion in LTS, I should still
see the opportunities behind this new home-based immersion. Now, I can say that the
home-based immersion provides unexpected opportunities in me: an opportunity to
enhance my social skills in this kind of platform, to enhance my creativity, and to
challenge my collaboration skills.

3. Be sensitive with the needs of the society. In implementing a project, make sure that
it benefits other people, and it has something to contribute to the society. We discussed
it thoroughly in writing the objectives of the project. It is my realization that home-based
immersion can still make a change to the society.

Generalization: The Implications of the Project to me as a Future Teacher

Self-Assessment of My Contribution and Involvement

If I would rate my involvement from the beginning until the end of the home-based
immersion, it would be 92 (50 No Contribution and 100 Maximum Contribution). In the
preparation of the umbrella project and sub-projects, I shared my insights during the
brainstorming.

BRAINSTORMING AND PREPARATION OF UMBRELLA

PROJECT AND SUB-PROJECTS
I share my insights during the video call and send direct
messages to our president to relay my concerns. I also
volunteer myself to present the project via google meet.

After we finalized the sub-projects, each group chose the project they want to
implement, and we chose the License To Thrive: Your Scientific Movie House. In the
preparation, I contributed to the brainstorming, finalizing the proposal paper, and finding
possible participants.

finalization of the said project like the locale of the
project and its general and specific objectives.
FINDING SENIOR HIGH STUDENT PARTICIPANTS
The picture shows the four student participants
I invited in our FB page. Three of them are considered
as active participants during the implementation
of our project.

I was happy seeing them participate actively in our

prepared activities. I was the one responsible of catching up
with them and knowing their status, if they have load or
none and so on.

During the implementation of the project, these are my assigned tasks.
