The J. Paul Getty Museum defines contemporary art as ‘’art made and
produced by artists living today. Today’s artists work in respond to a global
environment that is culturally diverse, technologically advancing , and multifaceted’’.
With this definition , you can picture the kind of art created today’s cpontemporary
artists as art that has a world view and is sensitive to the changing times.
Contemporary art today is not restricted to the individual experience of the artists but
is reflective of the world that we live in .

Welcome to the sixth and seventh module entitled Contemporary Art Forms
based on the Elements and Principles and their Differences from Region to Regions!
With great pride, it is a pleasure to know that you are one of the learners who are
set to continue explore more on learning about Art especially in the contemporary
period.With this journey of learning, you are to evaluate the contemporary art forms
based on the elements and principles and give their differences from regions to
regions by making research for more resources flavoring the essentials of this
module to capture.
Majority of the discussion on this subject focused on the how art is evolved
and applied in our real-life experiences as Filipinos living in specific localities. In
which, part of the discussions will show how appreciation and integration of art varies
with the collaborative power of contemporary art elements and principles . Now, you
might be asking of yourself after knowing and imagining that there are several
complex matters that you will go through in the future while studying this subject
matter. It is normal, and it is the reason why this module is carefully made just to

For clearer understanding, what is this contemporary art about? Strictly


speaking, the term "contemporary art" refers to art made and produced by artists
living today. Today's artists work in and respond to a global environment that is
culturally diverse, technologically advancing, and multifaceted. Working in a wide
range of mediums, contemporary artists often reflect and comment on modernday
society.
In those years, you have learned: Contemporary Art as something which is
produced at the present time and space. It includes and develops from the
Postmodern art which is itself a successor of Modern Art and according to J. Paul
Getty Museum Contemporary Arts are “arts made and produced by artists living
today, Today’s artists work in a respond to a global environment that us culturally
diverse, technologically advancing and multi-faceted” ii. The Contemporary Art comes
with 8 forms of artistic human expression namely: Architecture, Sculpture, Music,
Literature, Theater, Cinema, and Dance.

Now , we will be also be working in considering the activity of evaluating the


contemporary art forms based on the elements and principles and their differences
from regions to regions by learning the preceeding exercises to make a good start of
this study.

Let us give more emphasis in regard the question above as being studied in
our previous lessons. A Contemporary art is the art of today, produced by artists who
are living in the twenty-first century. Contemporary art provides an opportunity to
reflect on contemporary society and the issues relevant to ourselves, and the world
around us. Contemporary artists work in a globally influenced, culturally diverse, and
technologically advancing world.

Art is a product of an aesthetic expression by which aesthetic experience is


best served and fed. According to Aristotle, Art is man’s “pursuit to imitate life and
the world into something pleasing or beautiful”.

Contemporary art refers to all artworks created by artists that are living and
are very representative of our times. Many contemporary artists try to capture
modern-dar realities ranging from constant and instant connectivity to borderlies
societies.

Art in contemporary times has evolved into being appropriated into another
artwork , performed with a deeper understanding of life , created using varied
resources , and propagated with technology. Contemporary Artists are now as
innovative as ever.

Thus, to learn in different art forms, the succeeding page of this module will
thoroughly discuss each elements and principles that makes the art contemporary
and you would be assessed in the latter part of each discussion to check your
progress based on the inputs of this module.

The 5 Elements and Principles


In reaching this page, you must have learned the basic inputs that you need
to know in Contemporary Arts. And it is good to know that your knowledge is
progressing. From the above inputs, you are directed in this module to focus on
“Evaluating and comparing contemporary art forms based on the elements and
principles and their differences from regions to regions”.
As aforementioned, you have learned that there are at least 5 elements and
principles that makes the art contemporary. And now let start to focus on:
1. Appropriation
Have you ever copied an image fropm a photograph, advertisement or other
source? When it is OK to do this? When it is not OK to do this?
We live in a culture that overflows with the images and objects. From
television to internet , from the mall to the junkyard, we are surrounded by words,
images and objects , that are cheap or free and throwaway. It is not surprising that
artists today incorporate this stuff into their creative expression.
To appropriate, is to borrow or recycle. Appropriation is the practice of
creating new work by taking a preexisting images from another source – art history
books, advertisements the media- and transforming or combining it with new one.

Before moving to the next artform, let me congratulate you, because you just
learned the most important inputs about ‘’Appropriation’’. Which is evident when you
enumerate and describe some examples of Appropriation that gives relevance to
contemporary art. So, to continue with, let us proceed to the discussion on the next
element and principle; Performance.
2. Performance
Performance of contemporary artists has evolved to ‘’ emphasize spontaneous,
unpredictable elements of chance’’, according to the Walker Art Center .

The following examples Figure 2.2 justifies another art concept of Performance
as element and principle of art that interprets various human activities such as
ordinary activities like; chores, routines, and rituals, to socially relevant themes such
as poverty , commercialism and war while figure 2.3 shows Love-Care performance
by Janine Antoni.

Figure 2.4 is Yuan Mor’ O Ocampo is an award winning


performance artist whose commitment to creating powerful works of
performance art with strong cultural understones has eanred him the
reputation as an innovative and daring contemporary artist.. Figure 2.5
International Filipino performance artist Marilyn Arsem playing a,
performance dead person at the Philippine International Performance
Art Festival and Figure 2.6 is the performance evolved to emphasis
spontaneous elements of chance’’Walk Art Center

3. Space
How art transforms a space is now an occupation of contemporary artists.
Have you encountered a flashmob or sculpture installations in malls or parks?
These are examples of site-specific art forms wherein the artform is performed and
positioned in specific spots , especially in public places. Here are some examples of
site-specific art forms.

Print is a mural that preserves an image of American folkways that were rapidly
disappearing .

Figure 3.8 in heart shape art-form while figure 3.9 is a flashmob art form
performance that is performed and positioned in a specific space such as public places.

Therefore, space, as one of the classic elements of art, refers to the


distances or areas around, between, and within components of a piece.

4. Hybridity
Contemporary artists are now as innovative as ever. In traditional painting ,
only a few materials of conventional use. There are some contemporary visual artists
, may opt to use coffe for painting or carve miniature sculptures using crayons .
Hybridity in contemporary art is mixing of unlikely materials to produce an artwork.

The figure 4.10 is using coffee for painting, while figure 4.11 is using crayons
to create scultures and other miniature of bird. With this, there is also usage of
unconventional materials mixing of unlikely materials to produce an artwork in figure
4.12.

Another set of product of hybridity art innovation is the artwork of Karen Eland ,
figure 4.13 which is created through the usage of coffee and water. What an idea of
contemporary artworks to generate maximum appreciation for arts !

is no doubt that you have learned contemporary arts deeper than what you have
learned in your previous MAPEH classes. In fact, what hybridity contributes for
contemporary art forms form one to another is not because of the nature of people
themselves, but of the people’s culture, experience and philosophy in life. The nature
too has a great influence in art, for the reason that resources are patterned based on

creation and dissemination of artworks. Figure 5.14 is the artform presented on video
format and displayed thru plasma TV units provided by Samsung Philippines and
while figure 5.15 shows the artform of iPad Painting technology.
