THIRD PHD PROGRESS SUMMARY FOR APRIL – JUNE 2021
Having gotten approvals from NACOSTI, KMTC headquarter and pretested the instruments, the

researcher was able to achieve the following milestones in this quarter.

1. Recruitment of research assistants

Two research assistants who met the minimum criteria of having a Bachelors of Science

degree in Nursing and had a valid BLS certificate were recruited. They were taken

through the research tools and methodology of assessment explained and evaluated.

2. Recruitment of study participants and baseline data collection ( 1st phase)

In collaboration with the specific campus administration specific dates were organized

for data collection since the students were either in class or undertaking rural health

experience.

A total of 175 senior nursing students were recruited as follows.

Frequency Percent Valid Percent

Valid Thika KMTC 55 31.4 31.4
Embu KMTC 34 19.4 19.4
Nyeri KMTC 50 28.6 28.6
Murang'a KMTC 36 20.6 20.6
Total 175 100.0 100.0

The baseline data was collected in the four campuses as follows.

 Thika KMTC- on 27th April 2021 questionnaire administration and on the 8th of
May 2021 skills assessment was conducted

 Nyeri KMTC- On 10th May 2021, both knowledge and skills assessment was
done
3. Analyzing baseline data

The data from the coded tools was sorted through serials and entered into epi data v. 3.1.

It was cleaned and exported to SPSS v. 26. Analysis of objective 1,2 and 3 of the study

was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.

4. Conducting the intervention phase (2nd phase)

The study collaborator, the American Heart Association agency (Avenue Hospital team)

scheduled the training for the intervention phase in the month of May to early June 2021.

The intervention group members received the BLS health provider’s manuals (2015)

from AHA which they had two weeks of self learning. They also had three tutorial

sessions (face to face/ online). After two weeks a one day video based training was

carried out with demonstrations, return demonstrations and evaluations. The participants

also sat for the AHA exam and 157(89.7%) achieved the desired score for certification.

The intervention was carried as illustrated in the table below.
