S1 Class Cover (period 2 and period 5)

S1 classes are learning note rhythm values and notes of the treble clef.

21st Feb

(15 mins) Rhythm Clock activity


Using the rhythm clock activity sheet discuss with the class how you would tell the time by clapping the various
rhythms. Give them some time to practice with a partner, then get one or two students to clap a rhythm in front of
the class and try to guess the time.

Complete page 4 (It all adds up) and page 5 (matching the beats to the symbols)

(10 mins) Show me board review


Use show me boards to review their understanding of note values. Ask them to draw a quaver, crotchet, minim and
semibreve or other way around ask them to draw the note that has a value of a ½ or a ¼ etc.

28th Feb

(5 mins) Rhythm Clock starter


Ask one or two students to clap out a chosen time to the rest of the class and see if they can guess.

6th March

(40 mins) Watch ‘Stomp’ videos and analyse


 Type in the following URL Link: tiny.cc/STOMPBROOM. Students are going to analyse the percussion
performance looking at Timbre (the character or quality of a musical sound), Dynamics (how loud and quiet
the performance is) and Tempo (speed). Go over these and discuss with the class before watching the clip.
They may need to watch it twice.
 Type in the following URL Link: tiny.cc/STOMPDANCE. Watch this 9 min clip for ideas and explain that the
class is going to divide into groups of 4 and start to create their own Percussion composition.
 Type in the following URL link: tiny.cc/BODYPERCUSSION which is a short clip and discuss all the different
ways they can make rhythms through body percussion (clicking, clapping, shoulder tapping, stamping feet
etc.)

(15 mins) Group Brainstorm


In their groups start to brainstorm their percussion composition using body percussions and ‘trash’ objects like they
have seen in Stomp. They are going to spend the full lesson on this next week so they can take objects from home
that will make some of the noises they want. (Cardboard, plastic bottles, plastic objects etc.)
13th March

(10 mins) Intro to group task


Reminder of task in groups to create their own rhythm composition using body percussion and ‘trash’ objects

(45 mins) Create their rhythm composition


Students are to create their ‘trash’ percussion instruments and then start to decide on their rhythms and rehearse.
They will perform to the class at the end.

20th March

(15 mins) Literacy Skills workbook


 Explain that they will be learning the notes of the Treble Clef and Complete page 1 ‘Note This’. There are A3
laminate Treble Clef sheets (one between two) to help them fill in the sheet.
 The can then try and create their own reminder words for the lines and spaces.

(40 mins) 2 Activities 20 mins for each and then swap


 Activity one – create a poster on an A3 piece of paper of a giant Treble Clef with their own reminder words
for the lines and spaces.
 Activity two - on a keyboard practice treble clef notes playing ‘Someone you Loved’ and ‘Dance Monkey.’

27th March

(10 mins)
Reminder of the notes of the Treble Clef they learnt last week. Use show me boards to ask the students to draw
certain notes

(50 mins) 2 Activities 25 mins each and then swap


 Activity one – Give out the iPads and get students to go into the app ‘Note Blast’ where they can practice
their treble clef reading skills in game format with headphones. After they have tried this they can try out the
note reading game in the app ‘Treble Cat’ with progressively harder levels.
 Activity two - on a keyboard practice treble clef notes playing ‘Someone you Loved’ and ‘Dance Monkey.’
