Game of Thrones

The show about to be analyzed will be Season 7 of Game of Thrones. Game of thrones is set in a fictional
kingdom called Westeros and is full of drama, wars, magic, and dragons. In this season Daenerys
Targaryan arrives in the land of Westeros with her three large dragons and her army and has made an
alliance with Jon Snow, a Lord Commander. In episode 5 of the 7th season, the scene shows Jon standing
on a cliff, watching as Daenerys returns from travel will riding her dragon, Drogon. They land on the
mountain where Jon was waiting. Drogon approaches Jon slowly whilst growling at him. As Daenerys
and Drogon draw close to Jon, Jon took his glove off, then extended his arm to touch Drogon. Drogon
bared his teeth but just momentarily allows Jon to touch him. Daenerys dismounted Drogon then he flew
off, and Daenerys and Jon talk. I will analyze this scene through a structuralist and semiotic lens.

Semiotic
In this scene, Jon Snow exhibit various body language which help indicate his emotional state. Once
Drogon landed and approached Jon, Jon was visibly uneasy and nervous by being dangerously close to
the dragon. Drogon, on the other hand, roared at Jon as if to intimidate him and walked slowly towards
him, taking precaution and observing Jon who was a stranger to him. When Drogon did decide to let Jon
touch him, Drogon's breathing slowed down indicating a more relaxed state and signifies trust towards
Jon. Daenerys displayed curiosity as she was peering down to see what was happening. Her facial
expressions suggests confusion and shock that Jon was able to hold Drogon. In this scene Jon is dwarfed
by Drogon, with Daenerys sitting on top of him. The difference of elevation could symbolize the
difference of superiority and power but this power shifts as she descends the dragon and later walks
towards Jon to discuss matters.

Structuralism
Daenerys and Drogon are coming back from travel because they didn't not come from home. They land
on the ground because they are no longer in the sky. Drogon roars because he is not being silent. He
approaches Jon slowly because be is not moving fast. Jon was nervous because he was slightly trembling.
Drogon was growling at Jon because he bared his teeth and was emitting sounds. Daenerys was curious
because she was looking intently at the dynamic between Drogon and Jon. Jon removed his glove because
he is no longer wearing it. Drogon relaxed after Jon holds him because his breathing slowed down, he
stopped growling and he didn’t attack Jon. Daenerys was confused because her eyes widened, eyebrows
furrowed, and her mouth was slightly open in surprise. Daenerys dismounts for she was no longer on
Drogon's back. Drogon flies to the skies because he was no longer on the ground with the flap of his
wings. Jon and Daenerys talk because they exchanged few lines of dialogue.
