Your Task
• Your lecturer will form groups of 3-4 in class
• Given a business problem and small data set, construct a dashboard and participate in an 8-
minute role play involving the presentation of results to a manager.
Assessment Description
Business Context: Your team are to perform an analysis (Part A) and presentation (Part B) of data
which relates to persons on different visa types, entering and leaving Australia. You need to present
this to a group of managers at the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (assumed to
be in the class audience). See Part A and B Instructions below.
Data Set:
• You will be provided with the following data set in class in Week 11: “DATA4100_migration.xlsx”

• Variable descriptions are provided below.
State State name in Australia
Major groupings and visa Groupings of persons , e.g. Temporary visa, permanent, NZ, etc.
Visa type (per sector), e.g. VOC Ed, Higher Ed, Working holiday,
Type of visa etc.
Arrivals Net Overseas Migration Arrivals
Departures Net Overseas Migration departures
Nett Net Overseas Migration

Assessment Tasks
• Part A: Construct a dashboard with at least three charts, using software of your choice.
o You will be given 50 minutes to create visualisations in your groups that best represent the
data to a group of managers at the Department of Immigration and Citizenship interested in
migration trends in Australia.
o After 50 minutes have elapsed hand in (email) your visualisations to the lecturer.
• Part B: Once the visualisations are created, each member of your group should take one of these
roles:
o Data Analyst (Understands data storage/access and analysis)
o Data Visualizer (Understands best practice in designing of dashboards)
o Analytics Translator (Understands how to translate the results for executives in brief and
layman’s terms (simple language)
o Manager or executive (understands the “big picture” to be in the audience asking
questions)
o If you only have three members, you can combine the Analyst and Visualiser roles.
• The manager (audience) will have two minutes to ask questions relevant to the dashboard results
and comment on the results.
• The wider audience will then be asked if they have questions.
