• “Research from Harvard Business School demonstrated that EQ counts for twice as
much as IQ and Technical Skills in determining who will be successful!” Some Facts & Figures
• Udemy says the registration for its Coaching courses has gone up 300% in the last
few months.
• The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report lists emotional intelligence as
one of the critical skills of the 21st century, and it’s been linked to better
effectiveness, relationships, wellbeing and quality of life.
• Microsoft’s new research on the topic, “Leaders are out of touch with employees
and need a wake-up call.” The key question relationship-centered leaders will be
asking: In the face of this change, what do our people need in order to continue
creating value?
• The Microsoft study found that over 60% of front-line workers, especially those
under 30, are in survival mode.
• According to research by organizational psychologist Tasha Eurich, 95 percent of
people think they’re self-aware, but only 10 to 15 percent actually are, and that can
pose problems for your employees. Working with colleagues who aren’t self-aware
can cut a team’s success in half and, according to Eurich’s research, lead to
increased stress and decreased motivation.

Know Your Brain

The Thinking & Emotional Brain
• Emotion and motivation;
• Responsible for enhancing learning and
memory,
• Providing greater flexibility in our behavior
and thereby,
• Enables us to monitor events outside and
inside our bodies, which is an essential
quality for the development of the 'self’.

8
The Amygdala and the Affective System
• Within the limbic system sits the amygdala,
which has been shown to control our
instantaneous emotional responses.
• The amygdala, therefore, represent the brain
region in charge of the affective system, which
is responsible for,
• Many of our judgments, such as discerning
between good and bad, safe and threatening,
and friend and foe.

Tips for Enhancing Your Own Emotional Intelligence

• Reflect on your own emotions;

• Ask others for perspective;
• Be observant (of your own emotions);
• Use “the pause” (e.g., taking a moment to think
before speaking);
• Explore the “why” (bridge the gap by taking
someone else’s perspective);
• When criticized, don’t take offense. Instead, ask:
What can I learn?
• Practice, practice, practice (Bariso, 2016).
• Consider this quote from Gandhi: “Speak only if it
improves upon silence.”

Vision-Killing Behaviour Activity
1. Treating people badly—such as not showing people they care, forgetting to say thank you, not respecting people, not
making people feel valued;

2. Living by the adage “Do as I say, not as I do,” and not setting good examples;

3. Focusing on too many things at once;

4. Pushing too hard on the task and forgetting the people;

5. Not giving clear direction;

6. Not taking responsibility for failure;

7. Focusing on the detail and forgetting to tell the “whys” or the big picture;

8. Showing little or no personal commitment to the vision;

9. Allowing people who aren’t performing the job to remain.

If you find yourself frequently engaging in these behaviours, that’s a good indication that your leader EQ is low. Pay close
attention to the three behaviour you engage in the most often and commit to working on reducing or removing those
behaviour entirely.

to enhance your EQ, • Does this need to be said by me?
there are three vital

yourself: • Does this need to be said now?

Bariso, 2015 Scenario

• If you just noticed an employee doing

something great at work but remember that
he/she made a mistake a couple of weeks ago
that you never addressed…

• “No! Stop! Ask yourself:

• Does this need to be said?
• Does it need to be said by me?
• Does it need to be said by me now?”

Putting it Together
• The first rule of emotional intelligence: If people feel attacked, they defend -@EQjosh.

• Whether we intend to or not, we are spreading emotions to others. Self-awareness is

key. What are you spreading?

• Create Relationship-centered work environment.

• Take note of and build on strengths in our employees.

• Intentionally integrate gratitude practices in your workplace.

• Hybrid workplaces create both technical and relational challenges. To stay connected,
we’ll need good wifi. And we’ll need even better “human wifi” — that’s why emotional
intelligence is essential. -@EQjosh
