SMRs thru the Lens of Holtec International and SMR-160

T. F. Marcille
Stick around if you like …

My purpose
Provide you an overview of SMRs, which I intend to do within the context of the product
with which I am most familiar – the SMR-160 Small Modular Reactor

My premise
SMRs will be deployed in US and international markets to address energy demand in
hand with environmental and societal needs. In order to do so, SMRs must be
revolutionarily safe and affordable. Holtec International is developing the SMR-160 to
be just that, a safe, affordable power plant to meet these market demands, within a
trillion-dollar global market forecast for new nuclear power plants over the next 20+
years

SMR Market Outlook
Light-water SMRs are one of the more promising new nuclear technologies to
emerge in decades, and SMR-160 directly benefits from established and
applicable regulatory frameworks and supply chains.
There is growing customer interest in SMRs to meet market needs for reliable,
clean and flexible baseload electricity. To be sure, there are challenges facing
SMR commercialization, but some domestic and increasingly international clients
are firming up plans to deploy new nuclear power, cognizant of serious
government investments with early cost-share to help underpin and de-risk
projects.
As a pioneer in this space, Holtec International sees specific market opportunities
and recognizes the tremendous potential for SMR-160 inside and outside of the
United States.

Repurposing Retired NPP Sites
The smart use of national assets and infrastructure to build new nuclear
Decommissioning retired NPPs creates new sales and revenue streams for Holtec by virtue
of deconstruction activities, while providing opportunities for sales of spent fuel transfer
and storage casks and associated equipment.
Some of those decommissioned sites, owned and controlled by Holtec, offer ideal locations
and opportunities for siting future domestic SMR-160 plants. Oyster Creek is one such site
in our view.
Holtec also expects to transition from SMR-160 deployment projects to SMR-160
operations and support, and conceivably ownership of SMR-160 plants.
With its global engineering, operating, and manufacturing centers, Holtec is well positioned
to both deliver SMR-160 plants and to transition to a complementary business model (e.g.,
Holtec Management Model for Integrated Operations) and product and service offerings,
for return on Holtec and other investments in SMR-160 for new and expansive domestic
and export product and service opportunities.

Partners & Suppliers

A must if Advanced SMRs are to become a reality, now

With its significant investment in the SMR Advanced
Manufacturing facility (AMD) in Camden, NJ and with select major
suppliers, Holtec is expanding its supply chain and AVL while
developing needed capital equipment manufacturing plans to
ensure readiness for fabrication needed to ensure SMR-160
commercial projects.
Key to success of any enterprise like this is the quality, strength
and commitment of major partners. No one company do it alone

Near-term, Now-term Technology

SMR-160 is
a practical near-term SMR, using LWR technology, with well-proven
and modeled important thermal hydraulic and nuclear phenomena
to be manufactured and deployed in the US, with major export
potential
and is imminently licensable in the US via the existing LWR
regulatory frameworks and acceptance criteria and incorporating
only environmentally qualified components and suppliers.

A New Energy Future

To transition the US to a clean energy economy and meet aggressive state

de-carbonization goals, safe and advanced nuclear power must be part of
the US energy portfolio.
SMR-160 is 4-orders of magnitude safer than both current operating plants
and regulatory requirements.
SMR can compliment the integration of renewable energies into the power
grid - wind and solar – which otherwise will continue to be reliant upon
sufficient storage technology, favorable weather conditions
SMR-160 provides a constant source of reliable power with a carbon-free
footprint and integrates Holtec’s HI-POWER aqueous battery and HI-KOOL
condenser for a complete, clean and green hybrid energy solution.

SMRs are Important for America

For domestic (energy) and national security purposes, the US needs to

regain a leadership role in nuclear technology that it has surrendered to
adversaries - Russia and China.
Holtec’s advanced SMR-160 technology is entirely consistent with establishing a
position of US dominance in this critical and US job generating industry. The US
GOVT has pumped nearly a billion USD into SMRs and Advanced Reactors over the
last 10 years, and with substantial bipartisan support to continue such.

Advanced and safe nuclear technologies, such as, SMR-160 are positioned
to jump-start job creation in the US, which the Department of Commerce
has estimated could reach up to $740B through 2035.

The principal technical mission of

SMR-160 is safety and security.
Located underground, SMR-160’s
robustly designed core is
protected from cataclysmic
environmental phenomena and
malevolent acts. Designed to
provide an unfailingly safe and
economic source of clean nuclear
energy.

So that’s it …

My overview of SMRs, within the context of the SMR-160

and premise that SMRs will be deployed in US and international markets to
address energy demand in hand with environmental and societal needs, to
capture large emerging markets with the practical SMR-160 example presented
