Dialogue Between Two Friends About Bad Effects of Smoking

A dialogue between Zafi and Zarif about the bad effects of smoking:

Zafi: Hello, Zarif. How are you?

Zarif: I am not well. I have been suffering from cough but what about you?

Zafi: I am fine, but you are not well as you have become a chain smoker
nowadays. Smoking may be one of the main causes of your sickness.
Zarif: The doctor also said so. He also said that smoking might cause cancer,
heart attack, high blood pressure, chronic lung-troubles and some other
serious diseases.

Zafi: The doctor said rightly. One puff of cigarette smoke contains fifteen
billion particles of matter which are fatal to health.
Zarif: Besides, tobacco tar forms a brown, sticky mass inside the lungs and it
hinders the easy flow of blood.

Zafi: Then why you are not giving up smoking? Is there anything good in
smoking?
Zarif: No, nothing. Nobody could put any argument in favour of smoking.

Zafi: Absolutely. Remember that smoking affects not only the smokers but
also the people that may be around them.
Zarif: You are right. It also causes a great deal of financial and economic loss.

Zafi: Knowing so much, why you don’t give up smoking? If you thought
seriously about its bad effects, you should not smoke anymore.
Zarif: I tried to give it up, but I could not. I cannot even concentrate on my
study without smoking.

Zafi: It is a lame excuse. If you want you can give up smoking, in this case
your will power is enough. It is a suicidal habit.
Zarif: Yes, I know it is a suicidal habit that kills a person slowly. However,
within the shortest possible time, I will give up smoking totally.

Zafi: Thank you for your wise decision. You should not smoke anymore.
Remember that the sooner you give it up, the better it will be for you.
Zarif: Thanks a lot for your valuable suggestion.

plays an important role for communication in the present world. So, learning
English is a must.

Zafi: But it is unfortunate that we are neglecting it. For that we are lagging
behind our neighbours.
Zarif: Oh! It is really disgraceful. This situation must be changed if we want to
keep pace with the modern world.

Zafi: Right you are. Our international relations and trade would be affected
much if we do not learn English well.

receive higher studies as all the books on higher education are written in
English.

Zafi: Yes, it is only English that can help us to enter the storehouse of
knowledge.
Zarif: Absolutely. But it is a matter of shame that most of the university
graduates lack proper knowledge on English.

Zafi: Exactly, and as a result they are being deprived of getting good job and
receiving handsome salary.
Zarif: Right you are. A sound command over English is a prerequisite for good
job and good salary.

described in words. We must study and practice English seriously. Thank you.

that only the advanced section of our society has access to it.

Zafi: Really, it is unfortunate. Measures should be taken so that all people get
access to it.
Zarif: Right you are. Every educational institution should have Internet
connection. And the young should be encouraged to browse important
websites.

Zafi: Sure. By doing so students should be given the opportunity to have the
whole world through internet. But there are some bad effects of internet.
Zarif: Yes, some young people are watching pornography through internet,
which are degrading their morality.

Zafi: It is absolutely true. Besides, some people are blackmailing others

English and Solution

Zafi: Hello Zarif. How are you?

Zarif: I am fine and what about you? Why do you look so worried?

Zafi: I am well. I am not worried. But I am thinking why many students fail in English.
What are the causes behind it?

Zarif: There are several causes behind it. First of all, we do not have adequate, good
and experienced teachers of English.

Zafi: You are right. We are learning communicative English but the teachers follow
the age old teaching method. It is a major reason.
Zarif: Students are also not less responsible for their failure. Instead of following
their teachers and without understanding their topic they cram their lessons all the
time.

Zafi: Yes, you are right. But English is an International Language, so we must have
good command over this language if we want to develop our condition. But how is it
possible?

develop the four language skills - listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

teachers should be trained to be adept to communicative teaching method.

Zarif: Sure. Besides, students should also change their habit. They should study
regularly.

the students.

interest in learning English.

future.

Zarif: Good bye. See you again.

Zarif: Yes. I made friendship with some of my cousin’s friends. I visited their
homes off and on and enjoyed their hospitality.

Zafi: Oh, what a splendid summer vacation it was! Had I been with you!
Zarif: I also visited a village fair in the neighbouring village. That was a very
crowded but enjoyable fair too. It would really be nice if you were with me.

Zafi: Really I feel thrill. Thanks for your nice description.

Zarif: Most welcome to you.

Dialogue Between Two Friends on Difficulties in Learning English

Dialogue Between Two Friends on Difficulties in Learning English

Zafi: Hello Zarif! How are you?

Zarif: I am fine and you?

Zafi: I am fine too. I am very glad that you have come to visit me.
Zarif: Really! I have not seen you for quite some time.

Zafi: Yes, it seems to be an age. However, I have taken decision to learn

English well so that I can speak and write English fluently.
Zarif: Okay, you have taken a wise decision. I really appreciate your decision.
In fact, it is impossible to build up a career without learning English well.

Zafi: Exactly! But I do not know whether I would be able to learn English well
or my attempt to learn English will end in smoke. Do you think I will face
much difficulty to learn English?
Zarif: No, I do not think so. I hope you will succeed. What you need most to
learn English well is to develop the four language skills of English.

Zafi: What are these four language skills? And how can I develop these skills?
Zarif: These four language skills are reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
In order to develop your writing skill you have to learn the basic grammar
rules.

Zafi: Oh, I see. But is that all?

Zarif: No. Every day you have to write some pages. Besides, you have to learn
new vocabulary and their correct use and spelling. You have to write your
diary in English every day.

Zafi: But how can I develop my reading skill?

Zarif: By reading English newspapers daily, you can develop your reading skill
easily.

Zafi: But what about pronunciation for speaking?

Zarif: You can watch BBC, CNN, National Geographic Channel or English news
on television to develop your pronunciation skill. You can also speak in English
to one another in the class.

Zafi: It is an excellent idea. Thank you very much for your wise suggestions.
Zarif: You are most welcome. See you again.

Essay - Female Education in Bangladesh

Essay - Female Education in Bangladesh

Napoleon once said "Give me an educated mother and I will give you an
educated nation.” This statement is enough to prove the importance of
female education. No nation can progress without educated mothers. Allah
has created both man and woman equally. They are like the two sides of a
coin. One is incomplete without the other. So, education cannot be the only
possession of a single class or sex. Rather, it should be imparted equally to
both men and women. Our religion has also made education compulsory for
all.

In the past, our women folk were confined within the four walls of home.
Parents did not allow them to receive education and to participate in any
outside work. Early marriage, religious misinterpretation and the narrowness
of our outlook created bar to the path of education. These were great
disadvantages. Parents also thought it waste of time and money to educate
their girls. They did not understand that if girl children were educated they
could be as competent as male children.

As our women folk constitute almost half of our total population, no real
development is possible keeping them uneducated. We must not forget that
family is the primary training ground of human beings, and mother is at the
center. An educated mother knows well how to make and shape the character
of her children. She knows well how to bring up her children, to educate them
and to make them worthy. In domestic life, she can also extend her helping
hand to her husband. So, there is no alternative to female education.

It is a matter of great delight that women have started to come out of their
cocoons. Being educated, they are advancing forward and joining a wide
range of professions. They have already been able to prove their abilities.
They are also becoming successful in establishing themselves in educational,
scientific, industrial, cultural, philosophical, and literary arenas. Even they
have become successful in exposing their talent in politics and politicization.
In fact, they are becoming self-dependent day by day.

However, all disadvantages of female education including male domination of

the society, early marriage and religious misinterpretation must be removed
in the underdeveloped countries. The good news is that recently the scenario
of female education has started to change. All possible facilities of female
education have been extended. Education for girls up to degree level has
been made free with a monthly stipend. More schools and colleges for girls
are being set up to spread female education. If a mother is not educated, the
child is not taken care of properly. So, all of us should come forward to
spread female education.

Dear Ashik,

Your letter is just to hand. From the letter, I came to know everything. I am
very glad to know that you are going to arrange a picnic on the 15th instant. I
know it will be a day of much pleasure. I was really interested in joining it.
You know that I never miss a chance like this.

But I am unlucky enough as I cannot attend it. I have an important interview

on that day. Therefore, it is quite impossible on my part to join you. Please
do not take otherwise. I shall see you as soon as possible. Best wishes to you

Dear Mita,

Thank you very much for your kind and sympathetic letter. You say that words
are poor comforters. But the sympathy of true friends is a great comfort in
times of sorrow. I am really grateful to you for your kind letter.

Some say that death by stroke is a boon to him who dies rather unknowingly
though it is painful to his kith and kin. My father suffered no prolonged illness.
He passed away suddenly and quietly in his sleep. However, his death came
peacefully.

Father's death is a great shock to me though I do not fully realize it even yet.
He was fond of you and spoke of you several times towards the end of his
days. However, I may be excused from writing more at present. Wishing you
all the best.

Dear Orin,

I received your letter yesterday. In your letter you wanted to know what I
would do after my graduation. Our result may be published soon. You know
that my father was the only earning member in our family. Now he is retired.
I need a job immediately. But in the context of the present job-market of our
country, it is nearly a dream to get a job. So, I have no option but to go
abroad as I need to earn urgently.

You know that one of my cousins lives in Italy. On my father's request, he has

be able to help me manage a job there. So, I have taken final decision to go
abroad after my graduation. No more today. More when we meet.

Dear Sir

I have the honour to state that I am a student of class XI in your college. I

have been reading in your college for last one year. Since my admission I have
been doing well in all my examinations. In the last year change examination I
stood first obtaining 90% marks on an average.

However, I would like to inform you that my father is a retired school

teacher. He has no other source of income except his pension. So, he is no
longer in a position to bear my educational expenses after maintaining a large
family consisting of seven members. Four of them are studying in different
schools and colleges.

Unless I am awarded some financial help from the college poor fund, I shall
have no other alternative than to discontinue my studies.

In these circumstances I fervently pray and hope that your honour would be

Application to the Principal for Setting up an English Debating Club

22 August 2014

The Principal
Dhanmondi Ideal College
Dhanmondi, Dhaka 1216
Subject: Prayer for setting up an English Debating Club.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to state that our college is one of the most reputed
colleges in our country. Every year our college team participates in different
English competitions arranged by different TV channels and other educational
institutions. It does satisfactory well but fails to top the list as we are not
getting the opportunity to train up ourselves in the art of oratory.

It may be mentioned here that debate is the only effective way that helps a
student to learn the art of speaking fluently on the basis of logical arguments.
It also helps the students to develop their power of thinking and reasoning. It
is the training ground for making a student a great orator and a statesman in
later life.

But it is a pity that there is no English Debating Club to arrange debating

competitions and to practise debates at our college. If there had been an
English Debating Club, our college could obviously have done well in different
competitions.

We, therefore, pray and hope that you would be kind enough to take
necessary steps to set up an English Debating Club in our college in order to
fulfill our long-cherished desire.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact that we the

written communication all over the world and we cannot do without it for a

But our present examination system of English helps only to develop our
reading and writing skills. It does not help us to improve our proficiency in
spoken English. As a result, we are lagging behind in spoken English. So we
feel an enormous necessity to have an English Speaking Club in our college.

We, therefore, pray and hope that you would be kind enough to pass
necessary orders to set up an English Speaking Club in our college in order to

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact that we the students of

new subject "Information and Communication Technology' has been introduced in our

Subject: Prayer for opening a club on personality development.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact that our college life is
gradually coming to a close, but unfortunately we are being deprived of developing
the quality of our personality as there is no personality development club in our
college. So, we, the students of your college, have taken decision to open a

In our college there are many students who feel shy to communicate with others and
speak in front of audience.

We all know that the real key to the effectiveness of any profession is the ability to
demonstrate one's skills and personality effectively. Keeping this in mind, we would
like to open such a club so that we can develop our communication skills,

Essay- Natural Calamities in Bangladesh

Essay- Natural Calamities in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is a land of natural calamities. Here flood, cyclone, drought,
famine destroy the life and property every year. People have to live here
fighting against the frequent natural calamities like flood, cyclone, tidal bore,
heavy down-pour, and drought. Of all these natural calamities, floods and
cyclones are very common. They visit our country almost every year.

Floods in our country are caused in many ways. Among them heavy rainfall
during the rainy season and rush of water from the upper north are the main
causes of flood. It causes sudden increase of water in the rivers and canals
which overflow their banks and cause flood. Sometimes violent cyclones, tidal
bores, tsunami and melting of snow on mountains cause devastating floods.

Flood causes huge loss of our life and property and brings catastrophic
sufferings to the people of the country. The crop fields, houses, roads and
streets go under water. Standing crops and vegetables are damaged and
millions of people become homeless. They face the scarcity of food, drinkable
water, shelter and suffer much. Epidemic and famine break out to add to the
misery and suffering of the flood affected people.

Cyclone is another natural calamity in our country. It revolves violently round

a centre, advances rapidly and hits the offshore islands and mainland. During
the last few years, several devastating cyclones hit Bangladesh and caused
immense harm to the people. This weather condition is a curse, especially to
the people of coastal areas of Bangladesh.

Cyclones in Bangladesh usually originate from the Bay of Bengal and blows to
the mainland with tidal bore. It is often associated with thunders and heavy
showers. It takes away the lives of many people and animals. It destroys
houses, properties, crops and trees. It also creates the scarcity of food and
spread different kinds of diseases like diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, fever etc.
in all the affected areas.

However, the losses of cyclones can be reduced to some extent by using

modern technology of weather forecasting and prior warning. Flood can also
be prevented by building of embankments and barrages and by developing a
well-planned irrigation system. The river beds should be dredged for carrying
more water by the rivers.

In fine, the people of Bangladesh have no option but to live here fighting
against all kinds of natural calamities as they have nothing to do against these
natural calamities. Moreover, since there is no ways to stop these natural
calamities, the government should take effective measures to mitigate the
sufferings of the victims.

Essay - Science in Everyday Life

Essay - Science in Everyday Life

Science has achieved a tremendous advancement during the last few decades. Every
sphere of human life is largely influenced by science. From the time we get up from
bed till time to go to bed, we feel the influence of science. Not only the family life
but also the general life in society has a touch of science. The attachments of
science to our everyday life are many. Yet let us mention some of the major fields
where we cannot do without science.

Electricity is the first gift that we owe very much to science. It helps us to lit lights,
running fans, refrigerators, television, washing machines and other electrical
appliances. The computer also cannot run without electricity.
By using the modern transports like bus, truck, train and aircraft, we can travel a
long distance within a very short time. Carrying men and materials from one place to
another has also become easier. Science is used commonly in medical science. It
helps with the diagnosis of diseases and manufacturing and prescribing medicines. X-
ray, ECG etc. are used to diagnosis diseases very accurately.

With the help of science, multi-storied buildings are constructed. Many people can be
accommodated in these buildings at a time with all modern amenities like gas,
electricity, telephone, satellite channels etc.

It has brought about a revolutionary change in the field of telecommunication. In the

twinkle of an eye, a message can be sent from one corner of the world to the other
corners through fax, telex, telephone, mobile phone, satellite and internet.

We use science in weather forecasting nowadays. By studying the satellite pictures

we can know about the impending weather and can take step accordingly.

Scientific methods of cultivation are now being used to increase the production of
crops. With the use of scientific knowledge and tools, we can determine which soil is
suitable for which crops. We can prevent pest by chemicals. Again chemical
fertilizers are used to increase food production.

There are many other areas of our everyday life where we use science. They are too
many to mention. In short, we are indebted to science from our birth to our death. It
would be ungratefulness if we do not acknowledge the boons of science in our
everyday life.

Essay - My Favourite Hobby

Essay - My Favourite Hobby
Hobby means one's favorite occupation but not one's main business. A man
cannot depend on it for his living, but it is not less important than his main
business. It gives us joy and pleasure but we do not pay for it. Everyman
should have his own hobby for a sound mind and sound health. A man cannot
enjoy his leisure without a hobby. Our life becomes dull and monotonous
without hobby. So, it is necessary to have a hobby to enjoy life.

There are many kinds of hobbies like gardening, drawing picture, painting,
kite flying, stamp collecting, catching fish, etc. Whatever be one's hobby, it
offers one pleasure and relief from monotony. I am a student of class XII. I
also have a hobby and it is gardening. It gives me much pleasure, strengthens
my health, and refreshes my mind. The most important thing is that it
relieves me from my routine work.

I have a garden in front of my reading room. I have planted many kinds of

seasonal flower plants in it. I work there with a spade during my leisure. I
weed out grass and unnecessary plants and make the soil loose with spade. I
also plant new flower plants. I water them regularly. I have also put a fence
to make it safe from naughty boys and cattle.

After morning prayer, I go to my garden. My heart leaps up with joy to see my

garden full of various flowers. The flowers spread a sweet smell. The beauty
and sweet smell of different flowers make me jolly. I get great pleasure
everyday when I see the blooming flowers in my garden. The happy smile of
the flowers purifies my mind.

Every day I work in my garden at least for two hours. On holidays I work
longer in my garden. My toil in the garden makes my body strong. Whenever,
my friends, neighbors and relatives come to our home, I take them into my
garden and show them various flowers. They become very glad to see my
garden and appreciate my taste very much.

I am also very glad to choose this hobby as it helps me to improve my body

and mind. I get charmed at the beauty of the flowers of my garden especially
when they are tossed by gentle breeze. I also get pleasure when the sweet
scent of flowers come into my room. It helps me to forget my worries and
anxieties. I think everyone should have a hobby for a cheerful life.

Essay - My Aim in Life

Essay - My Aim in Life

There is a saying that a man without an aim in life is like a ship without a
rudder. We all know that a ship without a rudder faces danger. In the same
way, a man without an aim in life cannot reach his goal. Therefore, each
person should have a definite aim in life. This aim in life varies from person to
person, society to society, and country to country. Besides, it depends on
one's taste, liking, and surrounding environment.

Someone wants to be a doctor, someone wants to be an engineer and

someone wants to be an officer. Like others I also nourish an aim in life. My
aim in life is to become a teacher in future life. It is undoubtedly a difficult
task to fix an aim in life. I also faced much problem to fix my aim in life. At
long last I had been able to fix my aim in life after a lot of thinking and
analysis. Of course, I had specific reasons for my choice.

The first reason in favour of my choice is the belief that man is a lifelong
student in the lap of nature. There is no end of knowledge and this hunger for
knowledge haunts me madly. The second reason for my choice is the belief
that it is mother of all professions. Everybody, high ranking and low ranking,
civil and military officials, are taught by teachers. What they are today is the
work of a teacher.

What I want to be might astonish my parents, friends, and relatives. Because

in this age of high competition everybody is in favour of being a doctor, an
engineer, a civil or military officer, or a big business magnet or executive. All
these professions give people authority and wealth to exercise. But I believe
that a teacher is needed everywhere and thus can play a great role
everywhere. Above all, it is a noble profession

A good teacher is an asset to the country undoubtedly. He moulds the young

minds of the students. He inculcates in them the sense of patriotism, religion,
values, morality, social service, etc. He is a model to the students. He is to be
followed by the students. A good teacher can build up good citizens whom the
country badly need for its overall development. Though, in outward
appearance, he leads a very simple life, he is full of high thoughts and ideals.

Sometimes I feel sorry for the economic plight of the teachers in our country.
Sometimes it seems to me that the teachers are the objects of pity. Many high
level officials and politicians play with their fate. They are not ready to
accept and evaluate the service of the teachers. Though they mention
teachers as the architects of nation building in their speech, they look down
upon them. Until and unless teachers are respected and given due honour in
the society, the country will not develop.

In the developed countries, even in our neighbouring country India, teachers

are highly respected and well paid. Traffic police salute them when their cars
cross them. However, I strongly believe a teacher is the architect of nation
building though some negative aspects of this profession pains me. Lastly, I
want to be a teacher and I will remain happy remaining a teacher.

Essay - Deforestation and Its Harmful Effect

Essay - Deforestation and Its Harmful Effect

Deforestation means cutting down trees indiscriminately from an area. It is one of

the much talked global problems which is haunting the whole world. People are
cutting down trees to meet up their increasing demand. They are also destroying
forests in a large scale to increase their cultivable and residential land. Sometimes
they cut down trees and destroy forests in the name of development. Moreover, in
many parts of Bangladesh, people are to depend on wood for cooking their food. To
make fire, they also cut down trees indiscriminately.
Deforestation disturbs our ecological balance. According to the ecologists, there
should be 25% forest land of the total land area of a country. In Bangladesh, there is
only 16% forest of the total land. In India, there is only 13% forest of the total land.
To meet up the basic needs of food and housing, man is destroying forest without
caring. Green patches of land are no more green. New areas of the world are
becoming deserts as an immediate effect of deforestation. In absence of trees
carbondioxide is increasing worldwide. As a result, there is a global warming.

We know that trees give us oxygen and take in carbon dioxide. Due to lack of trees,
carbon dioxide is increasing worldwide making the world warmer. It is ultimately
causing the green house effect. In fact, deforestation has already started to take a
heavy revenge on human beings. Various natural disasters like flood, cyclone are
showing their appearance frequently. Inadequate number of trees are also causing
drought and damaging crops. Today animals and birds living in the forests are on the
verge of extinction due to deforestation.

Deforestation has many adverse effects on climate, agriculture and our life. It causes
the rise of sea level. Rising sea level brings about flood. Flood brings untold miseries
to the people. Deforestation causes river erosion also. River erosion makes many
people homeless and shelterless. So we can see that there is an interconnected link
and cycle between human beings, animals, and trees. It is deforestation that may
cause desertification in many parts of the world, which will pose a serious threat to
our living.

So, we all should be sincere to protect trees and take a firm stand against
deforestation. The government should introduce strict law and punish the people
who are responsible for deforestation. Alternative use of trees should be found out
and tree plantation should be strengthened. Besides, trees that were planted before
should be preserved. Thus we can prevent deforestation and ensure a happy and
healthy life.

affected people.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact that the recent
devastating flood has caused a great damage this year all around the locality. The
sufferings of the people beggar description. They are now suffering from want of
shelter, food, and medicine.

So, we, the students of your college, have taken decision to join voluntary service for
the flood affected people of this locality so that we can distribute collected relief
goods among them. We also would like to arrange at least a relief camp for them in
our college campus.

We, therefore, pray and hope that your honour would be kind enough to permit us to
join the voluntary service and open a relief camp in the college ground.

Subject: Prayer for permission to go on a study tour.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact that we are willing to go
on a study tour at Paharpur, Mahasthangarh, and Mainamoti. All these are historical
places. Monotonous classes have made our life dull and boring. A study tour can
relieve us from this monotony and refresh our mind. Moreover, it will help us to
widen the horizon of our knowledge.

Two of our professors have already agreed to guide our team. It may kindly be added
for your information that the group will consist of 30 members and we want to spend
two days at each place. We think we will need Tk. 3000/- each. We like to contribute
Tk. 2000/- each and we will need Tk. 30,000/- in addition to our purpose.

We, therefore, pray and hope that your honour would be kind enough to permit us to
go on the tour and sanction Tk. 30,000/- for the purpose so that we can make the

Dear Sir

We have the honour to state that we are very interested to organize a campaign on

turned into a revolution. People all over the country have taken the programme very
enthusiastically.

Moreover, the government agencies and the private sectors have come forward to
make the programme a complete success. Being a part and parcel of the society, we
cannot remain idle. Rather, we should work shoulder to shoulder for tree plantation
with the mass people of the country.

Under the above circumstances, we pray and hope that your honour would be kind
enough to permit us to organize and start the campaign on tree plantation in the
campus so that we can create awareness about tree plantation among the students of

English

10 December 2014

The Principal

Dhanmondi Ideal College

Dhanmondi, Dhaka 1216

Subject: Prayer for arranging some extra classes on English.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to state that we are going to sit for the HSC examinations this
year. We have only about six months' time in hand until the commencement of the
examination. We are going on well with other subjects but most of us did worse in
English in the previous college tests.

Besides, scheduled classes are not sufficient for those of us who are weak in English.
It would be a great help for us if you arrange some extra classes on English to remove
our weakness in this particular subject. We believe that our strength in English will
lead us to good results.

We, therefore, pray and hope that your honour would be kind enough to realize our
problem and take necessary steps immediately for the arrangement of extra classes
on English for the laggards.

Letter to the Hotel Manager Complaining About the Substandard Service

of His Restaurant

25 May, 2015

Rashed Ahmed, Manager

Kakoli Hotel & Restaurant

Jatrabari, Dhaka 1204

Dear Mr. Rashed,

You knew well my family and I was a regular client of your restaurant since it was
opened two years ago. Until our visit last Saturday we always were extremely
satisfied and had recommended it to several of our friends.
Unfortunately, we will not recommend it to anyone else unless things are improved
greatly since we were disappointed by both the food and the service on our last visit.
The food we were served was not up to anything like your previous standard. We
were served coldly by your sullen waiters who cared very little.

We gathered information that you opened another restaurant in the area and spent
much time to concentrate on that. However, the clients of your original restaurant
deserve attention as well. Otherwise we will go elsewhere expecting better service.

Yours sincerely

Letter to Your Friend Thanking Him for Sending You a Nice Birthday
Present

25 May, 2015

House: 42

Road: 15

Section: 11

Uttara 1230

My dear Mamun,

My birthday passed smoothly and happily yesterday. However, we all missed you. I
received your kind letter and charming present just in time. I can realize how much
you love me and why you could not come. Though you tried your best to do so.
Believe me, my dear friend, of all presents I got yours is the loveliest. I had long
been in need of a new camera and it has come from you. How could you guess my
thoughts I wonder. I shall now be able to take some really fine pictures with it.
In fact, I had a camera which was presented by my father. However, at present I
cannot use it, my younger brother has broken it recently. I took many pictures with
that camera when I went to visit different places of interest. I remember my uncle
had a very good camera. He bought it when he stayed in the USA.

However, I heartily thank you for the charming present and I shall always keep it as a
token of your deep love for me. I shall write to you all about my birthday party in the
next letter. Wishing you all the best.

Ever yours,

Rashid

Uttara 1230

Dear Enamul,

The news of your sudden admission into hospital has taken me aback. I have learnt
that you have been suffering from gastric pain for about a week. I wish I would have
been beside you in the hospital now. But as you know my test examination is going
on. I will come and meet you as soon as my exams are over. I am sending my younger
brother Mukul with some books. These will help you to remove your boredom.
However, do not get nervous. Be bold and think that you are quite well. In fact, what
you are suffering from is not a serious disease at all. Moreover, medical science has
made tremendous development. You need proper medical care now. Many people are
suffering from this disease now-a-days. I hope you recover soon. I come within a
fortnight. I am quite sure I will find you hale and hearty when we will meet. No
more today. I wish you all the best.

Application to the Principal for Setting up a Literary Club

22 August 2014

The Principal

Dhanmondi Ideal College

Dhanmondi, Dhaka 1216

Subject: Prayer for opening a literary club in the college campus.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to state that our college is one of the most reputed colleges in
our country. The performance of the students both in curricular and extracurricular
is also very good. Every year our college team participates in different cultural and
literary competitions arranged by different television channels and educational
institutions.

But it is a matter of great sorrow that there is no literary club in our college. If there
had been a literary club, our college could obviously have done well. On the other
hand, a literary club will help us to learn more about the great minds of the world
and their works. It will also help to bring all students together and give an
opportunity to share their views and thoughts.

Under the above circumstances, we pray and hope that your honour would be kind

Dhanmondi, Dhaka 1216

Subject: Prayer for opening a canteen in the college campus.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact that our college is one of
the best colleges in Dhaka city. Students come to this college from distant places.
So, they have to leave their residences early in the morning. They have to stay quite
a long time in the college. They need good tiffin to pass this time. But for want of a
canteen they have to take tiffin from outside restaurants. It is both costly and
unhygienic.

Moreover, these restaurants around the college are the haunts of antisocial people.
So, the girl students cannot go there to take tiffin. Setting up a canteen will go a
long to meet our needs.

The Principal

Dhanmondi Ideal College

Dhanmondi, Dhaka 1216

Subject: Prayer for solution of the problems in the canteen.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the deteriorating academic
atmosphere of the college. Recently the authority has allowed establishing a haat in
the vacant land in front of our college. It has deteriorated the atmosphere of the
entire institution. We also see that several tea stalls have been made in the
surrounding areas of the college. It is also heard that drugs are being sold in these
places.

Unfortunately, these tea stalls have become the gossiping place for the spoiled boys.
They have already started to eve tease the girls of the college. As a result, the girls
of our college are feeling insecure. If the law enforcement authority is not informed
about the situation, it could seriously damage the college atmosphere.
We, therefore, pray and hope that your honour would be kind enough to take

Subject: Prayer for setting up a cyber cafe in the college campus.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact that now it is a demand
of time to set up a cyber cafe in our college compound. You know that internet is the
source of all information. The students studying in your college sometimes are to go
to the nearby cyber cafes to gather necessary information.

Besides, the cyber cafes help the students get introduced with all over the world and
unfold their potentialities. In fact, it is almost impossible to live without internet in
this age of modern science.

We, therefore, pray and hope that your honour would be kind enough to set up a
cyber cafe in our college compound and oblige thereby.

Application to the Principal for Opening a Common Room

22 August 2014

The Principal

Dhanmondi Ideal College

Dhanmondi, Dhaka 1216

Subject: Prayer for opening a common room.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact that our college is one of
the reputed colleges in Dhaka city. But it is a great sorrow that we have been
suffering much for want of a common room in our college. After attending three
classes we feel the necessity of refreshing our boredom by gossiping among ourselves
or by reading a magazine or a newspaper or by playing different indoor games.

Besides, due to the lack of common room, the students spend their leisure either by
gossiping or roaming aimlessly. Hence you can easily realize the necessity of a
common room. If there had been a common room, we could have easily spent our
leisure properly.

Under the above circumstances, we pray and hope that your honour would be kind
enough to take necessary arrangements for opening a common room in our college
campus and oblige thereby.

Yours sincerely,

Hasan Mahmud

The Principal

Subject: Prayer for hanging some electric fans in the classroom.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact that our college is a tin
shed building. The classrooms are also not so spacious. But there are many students
in every class. During the summer the rooms become very hot and suffocating.

Besides, there is no electric fan in any of the rooms. So, it is almost impossible to
attend the classes during the summer season. Only hanging a few electric fans in the
classrooms can relieve the students from this inconvenience.

Under the above circumstances, we pray and hope that your honour would be kind
enough to take necessary steps to hang a few electric fans for each classroom.

Subject: Prayer for the change of elective subject.

Dear Sir

I have the honour to state that I am student of class XI of science group in your
college. I took up physics and Mathematics as my elective subject at the time of my
admission. I hoped that I would obtain high marks in Mathematics. But now
Mathematics seems very difficult to me.

Moreover, I find no interest in Mathematics though I enjoy reading Biology. So, I

would like to take up Biology instead of Mathematics. I have also taken such a
decision consulting my teachers.

I would, therefore, request you to give me an opportunity to change my elective

subject so that I can go on with my studies without any interruption.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact the recent cyclone has

For this reason, it is difficult for the examinees to concentrate on their studies.
Hence it would be convenient for us if the Test Examination is held one week later.

In view of the reason mentioned above, we pray and hope that your honour would be
kind enough to hold the Test Examination one week later so that we can take a
thorough preparation for the examination.

we want to give a reception to the freshers, we consider it proper to hold the

Dhanmondi, Dhaka 1216

Subject: Prayer for solution of the problems in the canteen.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact that we have been facing
various problems in our college canteen for a long time. As many of us come to
college from a long distance, we cannot take both breakfast and lunch at home and
we have to take food in this canteen.

Moreover, the canteen boys very often serve us stale food. They do not clean the
plates and glasses properly. They supply water that is not boiled. As a result, most
often we have to suffer from food poisoning and various water-borne diseases.

We, therefore, pray and hope that your honour would be kind enough to take
necessary steps to solve the existing problems so that we can get a hygienic and
clean canteen.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact that ours is a renowned
college in the city. There are about 3,000 students in our college. But it is a matter
of regret that there is no English daily in our college common room. As a result, we
are being deprived of developing our knowledge in English language.

Moreover, we are being deprived of gaining knowledge about the current affairs,
research findings, and scientific matters due to the lack of an English daily. In fact,
the practice of reading English daily is very important in the life of a student.

We, therefore, pray and hope that your honour would be kind enough to provide

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact that the students of our

about Earthquake

10 August 2014

The Principal

Dhanmondi Ideal College

Dhanmondi, Dhaka 1216

Subject: Prayer for setting up a consciousness raising camp about earthquake.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact that it has become a
crying need to set up a consciousness raising camp about earthquake in our college
campus as a part of social responsibility. We all know that our country lies in an
active earthquake zone. Recently there occurred a mid-level earthquake which
caused no causality. But it was a warning for us.
Experts say that in the near future a devastating earthquake may occur here with a
huge loss of lives and properties. So, it is our sacred duty to make general people
conscious of it if we want to minimize causalities. Unless people know what to do in
the event of an earthquake, they will not be able to save themselves.

Dear Sir
We, the inhabitants of Rasulpur, have the honour to inform you that ours is a village

tube-well in our village for five thousand people. It is not sufficient for us. So, the
people have to drink impure water from nearby ponds and canals.

As a result, many people often suffer from various diseases like diarrhea, dysentery,
cholera, etc. Sometimes these diseases carry off a large number of lives. Only sinking
a few tube-wells in the village may save these valuable lives.

The Chairman

Rasulpur Union Council

Subject: Prayer for construction of a bridge over the canal Shila.

Dear Sir

We, the inhabitants of Rasulpur, have the honour to inform you that there runs an
important canal called Shila along our village. It is near our school, college and
market. Many people including students have to cross this canal every day. During
dry season boats are not available. Then the only way to cross the canal is on foot.

But it is often impossible for children and girl students to cross the canal on foot
because the canal has become deep and wide nowadays. So, they cannot attend
school and college for several months. Only a small bridge over the canal can remove
all these problems.

In the circumstances mentioned above, we earnestly pray and hope that you would
be kind enough to take necessary steps to construct a bridge over the canal and
remove the sufferings of the people of this locality.

The Superintendent of Police

Mymensingh Range

Mymensingh, Bangladesh

Subject: Prayer for taking steps to control anti-social activities.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to express our views about the problem of anti-social activities
in Gafargaon. For the last several months some anti-social elements are in operation
in this upzilla. They rob the passers-by of their valuables at the point of dagger.
Sometimes they wander with revolvers and bombs to raid shops, houses, etc.
Sometimes they turn violent and destroy public and private properties.

Moreover, they often taunt and tease the school and college going girls, cheat the
shopkeepers, give no fair to the rickshaw pullers, and behave roughly with people
and passersby. In a word, unrest, anarchy and violence have spread in every walk of
life and the people of the upzilla are living in extreme panic.

Under the above circumstances, we earnestly pray and hope that you would try to
realize the panic and anxiety with which we are passing our days, and would take
proper steps for dealing with these anti-social activities as early as possible.

Subject: Prayer for taking actions against the toll-collectors.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact that the law and

from all classes of people. No construction and repair work is possible without
giving them a large amount of toll.

Most of the toll-collectors possess unlicensed arms. If anybody fails to fulfill

their demand, he is tortured inhumanly and is made bound to pay the money.
If proper steps are not taken to stop this toll collection right now, it would
become quite impossible for the people to live here.

Under the above circumstances, we earnestly pray and hope that you would

Uttara 1230

Dear Asad,
I am shocked to hear that your college has been closed sine die because of a clash
between two rival student groups. This is really alarming and I think that students
should not act like this. The first duty of a student is to read attentively and acquire
knowledge. They may take up politics as a subject of study for the improvement of
their life.

They also should watch how political institutions have developed in different
countries. But they must not take up any illegal or destructive method to do politics.
The government and the oppositions must take concerted efforts to stop armed
politics. I hope you will keep away from it and devote your time to studies. You may
take part in any social work. No more today. Best luck.

exam will end on 13 December. So, we are going to have a great chance to pass
leisure time. During this period I have a noble plan. You know that most of the
people of our country are illiterate. They even do not know how to read and how to
write.

Being a conscious person of the society, it is our moral duty to do something for the
inhabitants of our society. So, I have taken decision to start a night school in my
village. I think that performing this duty, we can be able to repay our debt to the
society partly. I earnestly invite you to join me. If you accompany me, my mission
will prove more successful. Best luck.

Yours ever,

Hasan

Uttara 1230

Dear Aslam,

I received your letter yesterday. From your letter I came to know that you are not
interested in reading newspapers regularly. It is very disappointing. You must know
that newspapers are called the storehouse of knowledge. Anyone, reading
newspapers, can know many things about the current affairs of the present world. By
knowing the news and views of the world, you can use them in your practical life.

There are various kinds of newspapers in our country such as daily, weekly, biweekly,
and monthly. Among the dailies the Prothom Alo, the Daily Star, the Ittefaq, and the
Kaler Kontho are widely circulated and very popular among the people. All these
newspapers can provide you with the latest news and views of any sector. Sports,
history, geography, politics, economics, business are all covered in these
newspapers.

Moreover, newspaper reading is a part and parcel of education. So, be serious about
reading newspaper. If you do not read newspapers daily, you'll be simply a book
worm and it will harm you in your future life. Convey my compliments to all of you
and respect to parents.

Uttara 1230

Dear Shaon,

Your letter is to hand. In your letter you have wanted to know how important the
English language is in our country. Now let me keep you informed of the situation.
You know that the present age is an age of globalization. The world has now become
a global village and people have come to closer each other. Different nations have
also come closer to one another and they are making communication with each
other.

For this communication purpose, a common language is necessary. And for many
reasons English has got the position of a global language. It is the official language of
many international organizations. More than 80% of all the information in the world's
computers is in English. Many organizations need employees who have a good
knowledge of English. So, the knowledge of English is mandatory for a good job.

All the books in different branches of science and technology are in English. As a
result, English is a must for higher education and international communication. I
hope and believe that you will cultivate the habit of having a good command of the
English language. No more today. More when we meet.

Letter to Your Friend Telling Him of How You have Prepared for the
Ensuing Examination

25 May, 2015

Munir Hostel

Room No: 31

Govt. Rajendra College

Faridpur, Bangladesh

Dear Rasel,

I have not heard of you for a long time. I think you are too busy with your
preparation to write to me. I believe you will cut a good figure in the ensuing
examination.

Sorry to say that I am not well-equipped to face the examination. As I did well in the
test examination, I was not serious about my studies. Now time seems to me very
short to read so many questions of all subjects before examination.

I am not thinking about English because there is nothing to memorize in this subject.
I am little worried about other subjects. However, I am working hard now. I hope I
will be able to cope with the situation. No more today. Best of luck.

Mahmud

Dear Sir

We have the honour to draw your kind attention to the fact that the old iron bridge
over the river Shila has turned into a risky one with the passage of time. You may

go to many places.

Moreover, many busses, trucks, and other vehicles move on this bridge every day.
The people are afraid that an accident may happen at any moment causing a heavy

The Chairman

Rasulpur Union Council

Gafargaon, Mymensingh

Subject: Prayer for repair Rasulpur-Maizhati road.

Dear Sir

We, the inhabitants of Rasulpur, have the honour to inform you that the main road
known as Rasulpur-Maizhati road is the only road for the people of these two villages.
About ten thousand people use this road every day. But the road has been badly
damaged by the rain water and the excessive movement of vehicles. At present no
motor vehicles can run on it without the risk of accident.

It is about four months since the rainy season came to an end. But no step has been
taken yet to repair the road. So, the villagers have to suffer terribly. Moreover, there
is a big college by the side of the road. As a result, the sufferings of the girl students
know no bounds.

In the circumstances mentioned above, we earnestly pray and hope that you would
be kind enough to take necessary steps to repair the road immediately to mitigate
the sufferings of the people.

Yours sincerely

Application to the Upazila Chairman for Repairing a Damaged Road

25 September 2014
The Upazila Chairman

Gafargaon, Mymensingh

Subject: Prayer for repairing the damaged road.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to state that the road connecting our municipality with
Mymensingh district headquarters is in a precarious condition. It has been badly
damaged by the recent flood. The students, who attend schools and colleges and the
people who go to Mymensingh, face a lot of troubles to go along the damaged road.

Moreover, as the road is damaged with big holes here and there, water remains
stagnant in the holes of the road. As a result, people often fall down in the holes and
get drenched. The movement of all vehicles in the road has already been stopped.

Under the above circumstances, we earnestly pray and hope that you would be kind
enough to take necessary steps to repair the road on a priority basis and lessen the
sufferings of the people.

Application to the Municipality Mayor Requesting to Provide Street

Lights
25 September 2014

The Mayor

Gafargaon Municipality

Gafargaon, Mymensingh

Subject: Prayer for providing street lights.

Dear Sir

We, the inhabitants of Ward No. 3 under your municipality, have the honour to state
that there is no street light in many places of our ward. As a result, the people of
this ward are suffering much. The situation turns worse after the sunset. Taking the
advantage of darkness, the muggers find the liberty to snatch away the valuables of
the pedestrians.

Moreover, some anti-social elements gather at the turns of the roads and footpaths
to take narcotics. Then they prey on passersby and snatch their money. Women and
girls of this area cannot dare to go out of their houses and go along the streets after
the sunset as they feel extremely unsecured.

We, therefore, pray and hope that considering the gravity of the situation, you would
be kind enough to take necessary steps to provide street lights in the above
mentioned ward on a priority basis and lessen the sufferings of the people.

Application to the Municipality Mayor for Taking Action against Drug

Business

25 September 2014

The Mayor

Gafargaon Municipality

Gafargaon, Mymensingh

Subject: Prayer for taking action against drug business.

Dear Sir

We have the honour to state that drug is being sold everywhere especially in our
municipality area and it is being used mainly by the youths. Consequently, crimes are
on the increase in this area. Rape, stealing, snatching, etc are very often committed
here and there. People are leading a very fearful life for these drug addicts.

These addicts usually gather at the isolated places to take drugs. The situation
becomes worse especially after the sunset. Sometimes, they take the opportunity of
darkness and prey on passersby to snatch their money. In a word, life has become
difficult here as measures are not being taken against them.

We, therefore, pray and hope that considering the gravity of the situation, you would
be kind enough to take strict measures against the addicts and the drug sellers
without any delay so that the situation can be controlled.
