AtmosAir Bi-Polar Ionization Technology
Presentation
AtmosAir Solutions is the most proven and effective solution to reduce TVOC, bacteria, germs and
virus providing healthy indoor environments where people thrive.

AtmosAir provides a healthier environment for you.

CDC & ASHRAE Update Q3 2020

• CDC/ASHRAE does not provide recommendations for, or against, any manufacturer or

manufacturer’s product. While bi-polar ionization has been around for decades, the
technology has matured and many of the earlier potential safety concerns are
reportedly now resolved.

• If you are considering the acquisition of bi-polar ionization equipment, you will want to
be sure that the equipment meets UL 2998 standard certification (Environmental Claim
Validation Procedure (ECVP) for Zero Ozone Emissions from Air Cleaners) which is
intended to validate that no harmful levels of ozone are produced. AtmosAir has UL
2998 and has long been shown to have zero impact on ozone levels. AtmosAir’s
unique design and tubes ensure ozone is not generated.

such as change orders. AtmosAir can give you back some of that time:
with less “Off-Gas”- VOC Time.

• AtmosAir is the ONLY purification technology that works proactively.

Our systems are extremely effective on post renovation odors.
Office: A Healthy “Quick Move In”

Benefits:

• Companies and their employees can move people in Quickly and Safely right after
renovation completion.

• For the occupant - savings on lost and less productive time in temporary office
arrangements and savings on rent as well. For the building reduce rent free periods.

• Our systems reduce several air contaminants (viruses, bacteria) and a Major
Accounting Firm has recently noticed we prevented an outbreak of the flu in their
floors (when the outbreak hit other floors without our systems.) We offer continuous
disinfection.

• AtmosAir systems reduce VOC’s such as formaldehyde, toluene, benzene are

typically off gasses from construction and renovation. AtmosAir Bipolar Ions can

AtmosAir Bipolar Ions
• In the most pristine environments
there are naturally higher ion levels.
These levels fall as we enter into
more populated and polluted
environments.

• Ion – An atom or molecule with a

net electric charge due to the loss
or gain of one or more electrons.

• AtmosAir Bi-Polar Ion (BPI) systems

are designed to increase air ions as
would be found in a natural state
where no pollution exists.

• Ions help improve many various

elements of indoor and outdoor air
quality (PM, VOCs, virus).
Ions On A Mission

The positively and negatively charged ions generated by the AtmosAir system
mimic the process that occurs in nature and actively attract, bind, and
neutralize all types of pollutants from the air in indoor environments.
3
5
How AtmosAir Bipolar Ionization Works

1. Airflow carries oxygen molecules over the AtmosAir Bipolar Ion Tubes.
2. AtmosAir Bi polar ionization tubes creates energy field (AtmosAir DBD BPI)
3. AtmosAir energy field produces positively and negatively charged air ions.
4. Negatively and positively charged air ions are attracted to and bond with oppositely charged airborne pollutants.
5. Interactions occur and reduce contaminant levels while producing measurably cleaner air.
AtmosAir Benefits
• Microbial & Pathogens Reduction – Airborne molds, bacteria and
viruses are reduced by particle decay as well as by preventing their
reproduction and their growth.

• Particle Decay – Particles are taken out of the breathing range to the
floor. Since bi-polar ionization will go the source of contamination, a
larger percentage of particles are affected than with filter systems.

• VOC and Odors Reduction – Chemical off-gasses and offensive

odors are eliminated by the interaction with ionized air, eliminating
the use of masking agents that add to indoor pollution.

• Energy Conservation – With an engineered air purification approach, ASHRAE’s 62.1 Guidelines allow you to
reduce the volume of outside air while providing the above benefits and greatly improving the indoor air quality.

• AtmosAir has been highly successful in applying such energy reductions in many projects. Capital expenses on
new installations are reduced through downsizing of HVAC equipment and infrastructure by utilizing the
procedure.

AtmosAir Bi-Polar Ionization vs. Viruses

“AtmosAir BPI causes production of clusters of hydroxyl radicals

which are formed of the surface of microbes removing hydrogen
from the microbes cell wall, thereby killing them. It can reduce
99.% of microbes in a matter of minutes. Ions work in a continuous
fashion to disinfect the air.” – Dr. Philip M. Tierno, Jr., NYU

Beneficial Effects of Bi-Polar Ionization

20
How Bi-polar Ionization Works

Mechanism for Inactivating Airborne Fungi

• Ions surround the mold spore.
• Ion break mold spore protein shell.
• Renders them inactive and unable to spread.

Mechanism for Inactivating Airborne Allergens

• Ions surround the airborne allergen and
change into highly reactive hydroxyl radicals.
• The hydroxyls then deactivate the molecules of
the IgE antibody binding site of the allergen.
• No allergic symptoms occur even if allergens
enter the body.

Mechanism for Inactivating Airborne Virus

• Ions attach themselves to virus.
• Ions pull hydrogen molecule off of virus to
combine and form water vapor.
• Renders virus inactive and cannot infect even
if it enters the body.
Beneficial Effects of Bi-Polar Ionization

Effectiveness on Dust, Mold Spores

Particle Reduction Laboratory Testing INTERTEK

The bi-polar process causes oppositely

charged
ions to attract particles. This will cause particle
agglomeration. Particles decay out of the
breathing
range much faster than they ordinarily would.

The particles are displaced from the breathing

range by the ionization process. The particles
are
now cleaned by the HVAC filters. The filters will
operate more efficiently since it will trap these
now
larger particles.

The bi-polar ionization not only reduces the

particles from the air before spread into the
room, Natural 12.8% AtmosAir 85.8% Natural 67.1% AtmosAir 91.1%
but also the outside air since less particles need
less ventilation. ANSI / AHAM AC -1-2002
Testing Performed to ANSI / AHAM AC -1-2002 Protocol
Beneficial Effects of Bi-Polar Ionization

VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) Control

• VOC’s are made up of complex chains of hydrocarbons.

• VOC’s are typically off gasses from many sources including, building materials, furnishings, people and
their activities, combustion sources, chemical storage, etc.

• VOC’s and CO2 levels are the reason outside air is required to be introduced into buildings, to control
these elements by diluting them.

• VOC’s commonly cause odors and irritations and can cause a sick building syndrome situation.

• Bi-polar ionization interacts with the hydrocarbon chain and breaks down it’s structure, turning
something complex and irritating or toxic into simple elements like CO2 and H2O.

• The VOC isn’t diluted or masked but is broken down and eliminated.

Beneficial Effects of Bi-Polar Ionization

Energy Conservation

• Systems use little energy, power draw for most units is less than 50
watts. Bi-polar systems also do not restrict airflow or cause
meaningful static pressure drop in a duct system.

• Allow for cost effective use of the ASHRAE 62.1 IAQ procedure which
allows for engineered systems where O/A can go below the
prescriptive rate method if contaminants are addressed and an air
purification strategy is implemented. IMC recognizes this method as
well as many local mechanical codes.

• Not only will lowering outside air effect operating costs but tonnage
load as well, when designing a new system.

• Less outside air also mean less introduction of particles and spores
and odorous elements from outside the building.
Beneficial Effects of Bi-Polar Ionization

Moving and Conditioning OA Typically Represents:

At least 35% (typically 50%) of total building energy consumption.

AtmosAir Bi-Polar Ionization:

Can Reduce OA Requirements up to 50% within ASHRAE

62.1/IMC code

Takes up little space within duct a duct or air handler.

Has little to no pressure drop.

AtmosAir BPI vs. UV Light

AtmosAir is active air cleaning technology. UV is a passive technology where the

contaminants must travel through the UV light to become sterilized.

With a UV installation, building air is not being cleaned in real time, it must first be
recycled through the returns to be sanitized.

The amount of contact time the contaminants have with UV light is in the milli-second or
even nano-second range. This does not allow a thorough reaction of all the
contaminants in the unit, let alone in the space.
AtmosAir and UV are Very Complementary Systems

Both should be used for the greatest results for treating airborne microorganisms such as the
corona virus. But what is the difference and why would my customer need both:
UV is a passive system :

1. UV will treat the cooling/heating coils, preventing buildup of molds and bacteria. This
prevents the build up from becoming a source for airborne microorganisms.

2. UV on the filters will kill microorganisms that may become trapped in the filter.

UV’s effectiveness is limited by the fact that air flow is often too fast for UV to kill any airborne
microorganisms.

Given that viruses and bacteria are transmitted person to person, UV is also limited in treating
person to person transmission.
AtmosAir Advantage – Continuous Disinfection
• AtmosAir is placed AFTER the coils and filters. AtmosAir is a proactive means to prevent
person to person transmission of microorganisms.

• AtmosAir Ions are pushed into the air. There they interact with microorganisms conducting
several functions including:
✓ Breaking apart the membrane rendering them inactive
✓ Surrounding the microorganism, rendering it unable to interact with human cells
✓ Causing microorganisms and the particles carrying them to agglomerate and fall out of
the air
✓ Causing fewer microorganisms to collect on fomite surfaces (surfaces that are frequent
sources of transmission)
✓ Causing microorganisms and the particles that they collect on to be captured more
easily when they pass by building filters

• Given the substantial economic implications of infections spreading through any office
spaces, it is prudent to deploy both UV and AtmosAir as means to control airborne
infections.

Case Study | Staples Center

Staples Center
Los Angeles, CA

SITUATION
AEG Facilities has set aggressive missions regarding energy efficiency and
sustainability. AtmosAir and independent laboratory EMSL tested the air qualities in
Staples Center’s Lexus Club, a private dining room located inside the Staples Center.
AEG/Staples Center engineering wanted a baseline measurement of contaminant
levels with the air handling and filter systems operating as installed, and later with
AtmosAir bipolar ionization systems working in the same air space, using reduced
outside air. After a successful test in the Lexus Club, the Staples Center engineering
team wanted to determine if AtmosAir systems generated an electrical energy
savings when installed in a large arena.

IMPLEMENTATION
The AEG Facilities engineering team tested HVAC power demanded in
a “before and after” AtmosAir test. Weather conditions were identical.
The “before” test was 48-hour test with AtmosAir purification systems
installed and operating, and the dampers set in a position for reduced
outside air. The “after” test was a 48-hour test beginning immediately
after the AtmosAir purification “before” test. The outside air dampers
were returned to normal, automatic operation.
Case Study | Staples Center

“We have proven that the AtmosAir system does in

fact provide cleaner air, and a savings in electrical
energy. This system helps us in our efforts towards
becoming more sustainable.”
– Bill Potoroff, VP, AEG

RESULTS

Air quality, especially gaseous elements, VOCs and TVoc, improved

significantly from baseline measurements to measurements taken with
AtmosAir systems installed and outside air reduced.

•Energy Savings: 21%

•PM10 Reduction: 25%
•TVOC Reduction: 90%
AtmosAir is currently installed throughout the entire arena. Third party
air testing was performed by EMSL laboratories.

Case Study | Major Thai Bank IAQ Study
Bangkok, Thailand

Two comprehensive studies were completed at

a major bank's headquarters in Bangkok.

Pretesting at the bank showed bacteria levels

measuring over 1,307 cfu/m3 which was 2.6
times the Singapore IAQ standard SS 554:2009
of 500 cfu/m3 for an air conditioned building.

AtmosAir units were installed in the AHU serving

the test floor (floor 3), and after 2 weeks the
bacterial count was reduced by 83% to just 234
cfu/m3 or about half the Singapore standard.

The bank then installed additional AtmosAir units into the Air Handling
Units serving 4 more areas in their building. After 2 weeks, the bacterial
level was tested on these additional 4 areas. The results showed a
total reduction of almost 92% or greater on each of these floors. On
one of the areas, the bacterial count dropped to only 48 cfu/m3.

turns to ash and ‘clogs’ the emitter reducing ion emission
effectiveness severely. This is another reason why you may
see products with ‘wiper arms’ which clean off the dead
brush debris. The wiper arms rely on a stepper motor which
can go bad over time. Any product that is not self-cleaning is
sure to go bad over time.
■ Most HVAC professionals has experienced a picture of a dirty
coil or dirty return filter. Most can envision the fact that a
0.25” needlepoint upstream of a coil stands little to no chance
of not getting covered by particles just as a media filter
would. They require constant cleaning for effectiveness.

Why Exposed Electodes (Needlepoints) Wear and Foul Quickly In HVAC Systems

Reason for Failure Detail

Erosion, Corrosion, and Oxidation The material of the electrode(s) has oxidized, and when the oxidation is heavy, it will be green on the
surface. The surface of the electrodes is also fretted and rough. Leads to imbalanced positive and
negative ionization rates.

Dry and Wet Fouling The electrode (needlepoint) is fouled by either wet or dry carbon.

Abnormal Erosion Abnormal electrode erosion is caused by the effects of corrosion, oxidation and reaction with
ambient air—all resulting in imbalanced electrode length and positve/negative ion generation rates.

Deposits The accumulation of deposits on the needlepoint end is influenced by input voltage, and the
needlepoints operating duration. This is why you see some models with self cleaning apparatus.

Overheating When a needlepoint overheats, deposits that have accumulated on the electrode tip melt and give
the electode tip (needlepoint) a glazed or glossy appearance.

Breakage Breakage is usually caused by thermal expansion and thermal shock due to sudden heating or
cooling.

Normal Life A worn electrode due to erosion requires higher voltages, which can lead to failure.

Melting Melting is caused by overheating. Discharges at the tip are up to 1500°. This can cause the
needlepoint surface to be uneven which will result in imbalanced electrode length and positve/
negative ion generation rates.

■ Needlepoint systems typically have 2-16 Needlepoint pairs
per system.
■ AtmosAir tube surface area (each tube is 21” in length) is
much larger than (2) Needlepoint brushes (< 1”).
■ “AtmosAir 21” tube presents more ability for airflow to flow
over the tube. This is very important as airflow (oxygen)
needs to flow over the discharge points to be ionized.
■ Needlepoint discharge points are < 0.25”, and they are cheap.

Some needlepoint systems are provided with a plaste wiper

carbon fibers every day.

It is important to think, ‘Why do some Needlepoint

products have plastic self-cleaning apparatus yet other
products (ion bars, modular ion bars, etc.) do not have
self-cleaning apparatus?’

This is a major fundamental contradiction that any engineer

Why the needlepoint ion systems require constant

maintenance is because as voltage is applied to the individual
Needlepoints, a debris or discharge builds up on the tip of the
needlepoint. This causes deposits and ultimately clogging
of the ion pins. Needlepoint ion systems can be clogged and
covered with particles, dirt, carbon deposits, etc. Once they
are dirty, they start to erode and fail.

to create any of the various Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS).
An Ionization Energy (IE) of 12.07 eV is the level at which
oxygen begins to ionize. Needlepoint manufacturers have
been explicitly stating that they DO NOT reach 12.07 eV.
Therefore if there are no ROS then what is the mysterious
active agent? Eradication without oxidation? Ions without air?
It is the superoxide anion that creates the hydroxyl radicals on
surfaces of pathogens. Hydroxyls are an extremely powerful
sanitizing agent. The only way to generate superoxide anions
is to ionize oxygen at over 12.07 eV. Needlepoint bi-polar
