LABORATORY EXERCISE NO. 1
THE HUMAN ORGANISM

Name: ANCHETA, Sam Michael G. Section: BSN 117 Date Submitted: August 21, 2021

I. INTRODUCTION
The human body consists of different organs that work together to carry out human
activities and sustain life. An understanding of its anatomy and physiology is important to
have an understanding of how it carries out the important processes needed for survival
and reproduction.

II. GIVE THE 6 STRUCTURAL AND FUNCTIONAL ORGANIZATIONS THAT MAKEUP AN

ORGANISM. BRIEFLY DESCRIBE EACH.
- (1) Chemical is the smallest level which includes chemical bonds, atoms and molecules.
(2) Cellular consists of the basic units of life (cells), compartments and organelles like
nucleus and mitochondria. (3) Tissues are population of cells with tantamount structure
and function plus extracellular substances they release. Tissues have four broad types
namely Epithelial, Connective, Muscular, and Nervous. (4) Organs are two or more tissue
types acting together to execute function(s) like heart, liver, kidney, etc. (5) Organ System
is a group of organs which contributes to a specific function like digestive system and
reproductive system. (6) Organism is when all organ systems work together. This
includes associated microorganisms such as intestinal bacteria.

B. True/False
Indicate whether the sentence or statement is true or false.

true 1. A midsagittal plane vertically divides the body through the midline into two equal left
and right portions or halves.

false 2. A horizontal or transverse plane is any plane dividing the body into left and right
portions.

true 3. A sagittal plane is any plane parallel to the midsagittal or median plane vertically
dividing the body into unequal right and left portions.

true 4. The organs of any cavity are referred to as the viscera.

true 5. The term parietal refers to the walls of a cavity.

false 6. The ventral cavity contains organs of the nervous system.

C. Completion
Complete each sentence or statement.

7. The term that means uppermost or above is Superior.

8. The term that means lowermost or below is Inferior.

9. Another term for ventral, which means towards the front, is Anterior.

10. Another term for posterior, which means towards the back, is Posterior.

11. The term that means nearest the midline of the body is Medial.

12. The term that means toward the side or away from the midline is Lateral.
