My Initial Step to Becoming a Great Listener”: A 500- word Reflection

"A week with my ears"

Before I began to observe, I used Julian Treasure's "silent" approach. I spent three
minutes a day in complete quietness to re-calibrate my thinking, and that's beneficial on my part
because, after my academic workloads, I was able to free my mind for the betterment of my
mood. October 29 is when I started to recognize my listening attitude towards my family. Most
of the time, I don't join them for breakfast or supper since their working schedule and mine at
school aren't in sync, so I modified it to join them. After a week, I gathered my ratings and
calculated them, yielding a score of 3.314. (remembering).
In practice, I know that while I am strong at remembering things in my educational
context, I am a far better listener than a visual learner. I have this mindset of reaching very high
expectations for myself, and I barely rated myself a 6 on my observations. Most of the time,
when I was observing, I tended to list the lowest possible rating since I couldn't relate to what my
family were talking about; therefore, I hardly understood anything they said. Maybe it's because
they're used to my absence. Their conversations revolve around business, careers, people I don’t
know, and anything remotely related to that.
After consecutive days with poor ratings, I realized something was off with me, not them.
So, I've been thinking about how I might relate to them, and one method is to initiate a
conversation. So, after my midterm results were distributed, I announced it to them and spoke
about it all night. I informed them that I had three 4.00 grades, the curriculum's highest grade,
one of which is my major, Anatomy and Physiology. Because most of my family members
worked in the medical field, they bombarded me with medical questions, making that night
incredibly interactive and fascinating.
Another night, we discussed politics. I am a supporter of Leni Robredo, and my family is
a supporter of BBM. Because of the backlash of perspectives, our discourse is interesting at that
moment. I attentively listened to their arguments and gave credible counterarguments to back up
my stand. Even though the discussion is participatory, I have pondered on it and considered it a
barrier to listening due to the differences in opinions. Because of their ideas and prejudices, my
family tend not to trust my arguments, which creates a barrier because they are not receptive to
my opinion. Here, I have reflected that at some point in my life, filters such as beliefs and
behaviors affects my perception of things and how I respond to them.
Overall, I did not rate high enough in any of the six components to be called exceptional
in any listening area. This demonstrates that I have room to develop on all levels of listening.

Some areas that I scored extremely low on are areas that I need to think about more in terms of
listening and other factors and elements that may be related to listening.
