LESSON # 1

Let’s Begin
The Revolution According to Raymundo Mata (excerpt)
By Gina Apostol

1. Noli Me Tangere was widely regarded after its publication as one of the
catalysts for Filipino nationalism, which led to the 1896 Philippine
Revolution. The story not only awoke a dormant Filipino conciousness, but
it also laid the groundwork for achieving independence.

2.It is because of their priceless significance, novels in our country remain

in the pages of books for me .Despite the fact that enormous numbers of
Filipinos no longer know how to turn pages of books, they are more
interested in social media and other forms of technology. However, I am
aware that Philippine literature is not extinct. Noli is proof that Filipinos are
capable of creating works of art. There have been numerous novels
published and released since Noli, but none of them can compare to our
Noli .It is significant, It is a source of pride for us ,and it represent us. Yes,
people are still inspired by novels nowadays, but not in same way that they
were in the past.

3.Reading stories is a knowledge enhancing tool that may help you to

broaden your vocabulary through reading is quite boring but worth it. Yes,
social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram , Twitter, and others are
very popular these days. Social media platforms, particularly Facebook
,are rife with rants. Living in an ever changing world, it’s unsurprising that
today’s youth don’t know how to turn pages of a book. Books are for
intelligent people, whereas social media is for pleasure .For us ,the
facebook generation, literature is important. Even though we live in a
modern day when we use technology to entertain ourselves, learn new
things, and make our lives easier. However, as Filipinos, we must expand
our own literature in order to comprehend the heart of our nationalism.
Always keep in mind that in the highest civilizations ,books or literature are
the greatest pleasure.
Learning Time
FAMILY TREE

Grandfather history and his wife and daughters

What my grandfather Tirso told me when he was still alive, he and his
family experienced war and because of that their parents died and their
only sister also died. Tatay was the eldest of their siblings so he supported
his siblings. And when my grandfather got married and had children, the
events of the past were repeated that every time they ate, NPAs entered.
And to prove that the people are not part of the NPA group in their area,
they enter the houses if they see a gun, they arrest it and when they see
my grandfather's gun, they arrest him but they are prisoned because the
gun is licensed the only thing made of them is reported to the municipality
every day.
ESSAY

They are Filipino because they were born in the Philippines and they have the
etiquette of a Filipino. It is one thing to be brave enough to fight for our country
and that is also what my ancestors did. They fought fairly for our country so that
we can achieve freedom. Being caring, caring for his younger siblings and even his
fellow Filipinos did the same thing my ancestors used to do. Being polite. And I
can say that they are truly Filipinos because all the cultures and traditions of the
Filipinos have been taught and inherited by them and we will also pass them on to
our future children

They are not from the upper class, but even though they are not from the upper
class they were still able to fight for freedom in our country. That even though
they are not from the upper class, they still have the love that cannot be matched
by any amount, the respect for each other, the cooperation, and the tolerance are
still there. It doesn't matter where you come from, whether you are from the
upper class or the lower class. My grandfather used to say that even if you are
poor or rich, it is important that you love, give, and have faith in the Lord. so I am
proud of my ancestors that even though they are not from the upper class they
inherited us even if not or of great value but inherited us good lessons.

If I was to imagine the life of my ancestors during the Philippine Revolution, all I
could picture in my mind is that they were all scared of what was happening. It
was the biggest concern of the country, and so everyone is in panic and agitated.
Their life was not lived in the best era, but at least they witnessed how the
Filipinos fought for democracy. Their eyes saw the process of it all, from begging
for democracy to the next generation living with the freedom they fought for. It
sure was not an easy journey, but all of it was worth it
ARE YOU READY?
The Revolution According to Raymundo Mata
(Excerpt)

HOW ARE YOU AFTER THE READING SESSION?

1. The narrator was so influenced by the Noli Me Tangere because after reading
this novel, his philosophy, his beliefs and his viewpoint changed in life.I can
identify to the narrator’s reading experience, because after providing me insights
“inside the world”I moved, surprises and awakens my soul.
2. Yes.The Hunger Games is novel by Suzanne Collins. It had such an impression on
me because it magnifies and grows my imagination from the beginning to the
end of the novel, and it also encompasses the true meaning of revolution and is
an example to everyone to get up and fight their freedom.
3. For me, this means that everyone who simply takes or receives insight or
knowledge provided by artists with no right appreciation is a contempt, and since
art is mase with an ability tp represent essential thoughts or sentiments of the
artist, I believe that art should not be an accusation. In every part of life that we
may share,we should tie art to society, because art is simply our emotional
condition of feeling.
4. My reaction is that I feel exactly the same way they do after reading it, and this
book can elicit such a strong response in the Philippines because it leaves such an
impression or reaction on those who read it.
5. I think the narrator is implying that the event depicted in the novel was a
significant part of our history, and that this is still true today ,because it recounts
the fact and incident that occurred,as well as providing a window into what
people experienced during that time period.
6. Yes,after reading the novel,I thought I had been driven to resist the government
since it calls me to stand up and fight for freedom in my own nation.
7. Yes,reading brings greater empathy to others and make us more critical and
reflexive because people tent to comprehend and understand what the
character feel and sees in history.
8. It still applies now as I read the excerpt. It gives an overview of the things that
have been or were in the past and provides every person with an opportunity to
take a look at their own different lives.Literature has an important role for
society.
9. In the past,Noli Me Tangere was forbidden or banned,as it shows the revolution
and wakes every Filipino against the vulgar Spaniards who introduced the Roman
Catholic faith into the Philippines.Philippine schools need to study this because
it’s written by our national hero,Jose Riza,in our Philippine literature. It’s also
extremely important to know what happened at that time and it’s part of our
history.
10. A book is a type of knowledge that can assist us in gaining
knowledge, concepts, and information in a variety of methods.Even if each author
has a unique perspective and opinion on what they’ve written,it’s still regarded
knowledge. It has the potential to modify or shift someone’s opinion in a
persuasive and instructive manner, but whether we believe it or not is up to us.As
a result,I believe that books should never be outlawed.

CONCLUSION
My observations are that, the Filipino people have suffered
enough in the past. We fought for our freedom, for our peace
and democracy. We should not put to waste the blood, sweat and
efforts of our ancestors. We shall continue to live, to love, for
our people and for our nation.
