1. Draw a concept map showing the relationship of the words “nation” and “nationalism”.

2. Answer the question, how Rizal’s works relate to the Philippine nationalism. What made
his novels became a source of patriotic values and nationalism. You may also state the
reason what made Rizal write the novels Noli and El Fili. You may write your answer in
an essay form or in a paragraph (if you want to go ‘direct to the point’).

Jose Rizal is one of the reasons why our homeland is free from Spanish Colonization. He
awakened many Filipinos through his writings, wisdom, and courageousness. Rizal
exposed the evils of the Spanish people and the government through his works. He was
also able to expose the friars' wrongdoings, which were well-known for their cruel
behaviors in our fellow Filipinos. The most well-known works of Rizal are the Noli Me
Tángere (Touch Me Not) and El Filibusterismo (The Reign of the Greed). These two
works show the inequality of rights at that time. He wants to reform and to get free from
colonizers.
In my own opinion, he wrote works to be able to show people what he sees in our
country. He wants his fellow Filipinos to love their own home as well. He wants Filipinos
to develop their values and develop their character. He wants to let people know that they
also have their strengths so they can also develop their principles in life.
