Course description

This course gives students an actual experience in conducting a language research. It trains
students to be critical readers and writers necessary for them to become effective language
researchers. The course contains an overview of language research and the processes involved in
conducting it.

Course objective
This course aims to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills needed to conduct
language research. It likewise aims to provide an avenue for the students to write research
proposals and train them to successfully defend such in front of a language research panelists.

Course intended learning outcomes (CILOs)


By the time of completion of this course, the students will be able to:

1. Explain the principles and characteristics of effective language research;


2. Examine the techniques of constructing and developing a language research
problem;
3. Describe the principles and steps in writing a well-organized research paper;
4. Appreciate the value and need for responsibility, cooperation, and leadership by
actively; participating in group activities; and
5. Show the spirit of teamwork and camaraderie in conducting research work.

The students will be able to:

1. articulate and discuss the latest developments in the specific field of practice;
2. use the techniques, skills, and modern technology necessary for the practice of the
profession;
3. apply knowledge of contemporary issues and principles of ethics relevant to
professional; practice;

5. function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams and
in multidisciplinary settings;
6. communicate effectively in oral and in written English; and
7. recognize the need for, and prepare to engage in lifelong learning.

Language research course topics


Prelim Period (Weeks 1–6)

Orientation: TIP mission-vision, CILO, PILO, Graduate attributes, Syllabus contents, Course


requirements. Course Orientation: Introduction to the course, Definition of research,
Objectives of Research, Characteristics and Motivations for research, Kinds of Research,
Research Approaches, Significance of research, Research Methods and Research Methodology.

Midterm Period (Weeks 7–12)

Research Process: Parts of research: Chapter 1 – The Problem and Its Background, Chapter 2
– Review of Related Literature and Studies, Chapter 3 – Methods of Research, Chapter 4 –
Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation of Data, Chapter 5 – Summary of Findings,
Conclusions and Recommendations. The Research Designs. The Research Proposal: Parts of a
Research proposal, Writing a Research Proposal.

Final Period (Weeks 13–18)

Sources of Data: Primary sources, Secondary sources. Guidelines in writing the first draft,
Effective introduction / beginning.Academic writing conventions, Note taking, Copying, citing,
and processing, Highlighting important information, APA format, Direct quotation,
Paraphrasing, Summarizing, Preparing a bibliography, Discussion format in research paper,
Research Proposal Oral Defense (Chapters 1, 2, 3).
