Sandwich – is two pieces of bread with something in between them (meat -ham, bacon,
burger patty, peanut butter, jam, jelly, nutella, cheese etc.)
– One slice of bread covered with food. (pizza)

History of Sandwich
Food historians generally attribute the creation of the sandwich to John Montagu, the
4th Earl of Sandwich. This Englishman is fond of gambling that in 1762, during a 24 hour
gambling streak, he instructed his cook to prepare food that would not interfere with his
game. The cook presented him with sliced meat between 2 pieces of toast.

Importance of Eating and Knowing How to Prepare a Sandwich:


1. Sandwich gives us meals that help sustain us in our daily lives-we can eat
sandwich for breakfast, lunch and even dinner.
2. You can have it your way. You can put any filling and spread that you want
depending on what is your favorite and what is available.
3. It is so easy to prepare and convenient to eat.

Fillings – protein
Spread - fat

3 Components of a Sandwich
1. Structure or base (usually the bread)
2. Spread or moistening agent
3. Filling

1. Structure/Base (Bread) – holds or contains the spread and fillings and gives sandwich
its shape. It may be made up of more than one slice of bread.
Examples:
- Pan de sal, Monay
- Wheat bread
- Pita Bread
- Long Rolls for submarine sandwiches
- Hotdog & Hamburger Rolls
- Hard and soft rolls
- Pullman loaves/Sliced bread
- French and Italian Bread rolls

2. Spread – add flavor, moisture and richness to the sandwich and serves as a binder to
prevent the bread from becoming soggy.
Examples:
- Mayonnaise
- Butter
- Strawberry jam
- Vegetable Purees
- Orange Marmalade
- Apple Jelly

3. Filling – the body of the sandwich which consists of hot or cold ingredients or a
combination of both.
Examples:
- Ham
- Salami
- Hot dogs
- Beef
- Patty
- Grilled Meat/Steak
- Bacon

Other Fillings:
- Cheese
- Lettuce
- Tomato
- Pickle
- Cucumber
Types of Sandwich According To Temperature:
1. Hot sandwich – Filling ingredients are served hot, remain hot throughout, most
likely accompanied with a sauce.
2. Cold sandwich – Filling ingredients are served at room temperature.

Hot Sandwich According To Style:


1. Closed Hot Sandwich – have fillings placed between two slices of bread
Examples:
- Hamburger
- Steak sandwich
- Hotdog sandwich
- Fried closed sandwich
- Grilled closed sandwich

2. Open Hot Sandwiches – Have spreads and fillings placed on top of 1 slice of bread
Examples:
- Pizza
- Roast Beef open faced sandwich

Cold Sandwich According To Style:


1. Closed Cold Sandwich
- Egg sandwich
- Continental Sandwich
- Multidecker/Double Layer Sandwich
- Tea Sandwich
- Buffet sandwich

2. Finger Sandwiches – small, fancy closed sandwich which are cut into various shapes
and used as appetizers
3. Open faced sandwich – have spreads and fillings placed on top of a piece bread; not
closed together

4. Wrap – are made of soft, flat breads that are wrapped around the fillings

Methods of Preparing Sandwiches:


1. Use fresh bread appropriate to the type of sandwich. Use bread with a thick crust
to prevent the bread from getting soggy.
2. Choose the right spread – spread must be enough to cover the interior part and
not overflowing outside.
3. Choose fillings correctly. Fillings such as lettuce and tomato give crunchiness,
freshness and moisture. They can make the bread soggy so choose a thick crust
bread.
4. Toasting of bread can prevent soggy sandwich.
