9. A youth centre conducts a survey on the average daily hours spent by teenagers on surfing the
Internet. It is found that that the average daily hours follow a normal distribution with a mean of
hours and a standard deviation of 0.6 hour.
(a) A random sample of 30 teenagers is selected and their average daily hours spent on
surfing the Internet are recorded as follows:
1.6 2.4 3.7 2.8 0.9
2.4 2.1 2.9 1.6 3.5
0.6 2.1 4.1 4.8 1.9

3.6 3.3 1.1 2.7 0.8
5.1 1.9 2.5 2.6 1.2
(i) Construct an approximate 95% confidence interval for the proportion of teenagers
who spend, on average, less than 2 hours per day on surfing the Internet.
(ii) Find the least sample size to be taken such that the width of the 99% confidence
interval for is less than 0.4 hour.

(c) The method which can extract more coal in the first 10 years is adopted. It is known
that the cost C (in million dollars) of extracting coal can be modelled by
dC t
3 , where t is the number of years elapsed since the extraction started. If
dt 5
the agreed selling price of the coal is $750 per tonne, find the total net profit of the
company from selling coal in the first 10 years. Give your answer correct to the

(b) The government announces that if more than 50% of the chickens on a farm die, all the
chickens on the farm must be killed.
(i) Using the values of A and k obtained in (a), find the rate of change
of the number of chickens on the farm.
(ii) Will all the chickens be killed? Explain your answer.

(c) The chicken farmer lost $22 500 due to the avian influenza outbreak. He then decided to
raise pigs instead of chickens. The rate of change of net profit
$P from raising pigs can be modelled by
dP t t
125 e 20 e 40 ( 0 t 80 ),
dt
where t is the number of days elapsed since the farmer begins raising pigs. Find the
minimum number of days for the net profit from raising pigs to compensate for the loss
from avian influenza.
